In 2023 after around ~6 months grinding it out and interviewing to land a senior software engineering job, I got laid off after only 6 months at the job. This was the last straw that broke the camel's back. I'm done with software engineering and the tech industry. I'm out and here is my 5 reasons.

So true. It's one thing the interview process is so hideous; it's another thing the job is so unstable. It's like, why am I working so hard to end up jobless at the end

I've realised that the reason why I got into tech in the first place was really only so I could make things for myself, and share it so others may also find value in it. Not necessarily to slave away for a company.

Like what type of stuff would you build for yourself?

Hey dude, sorry about the tough journey getting a job in a senior role and all. This was an insightful video that I enjoyed watching. A few suggestions: Firstly, you took a python course in the beginning for fun, and then you at least didn't hate it enough to be able to do a boot camp. Maybe your entire being isn't aligned with being a software engineer, but I think it's wrong to say you weren't passionate about it at all. Second, it seems you started to hate the industry more as you went for roles with more responsibility, which is something you did not enjoy. Maybe you would enjoy your job more if you just stuck to the junior roles. Maybe you could take your time a little more with that and at some point you would feel more comfortable in a senior role. If not you could just stay in a junior role forever. Less work and still decent money. Third, a suggestion for the future, maybe you could become a teacher at a boot camp or tutor online as a freelancer. I personally also am community oriented at least somewhat and I find teaching highly rewarding. You get to work with people and help them directly every day. Also it has the potential to pay well if you can find the right clients.

Hey Daniel, thanks for sharing this. As a mid level engineer, i thought of quitting tech and just go farming ( lol ) , but mainly due to the whole corporate culture. Good luck

i salute all the senior devs who step down. you guys give way so that new programmers could get a job. if a senior dev retires, there will instantly be open slots for junior, mid and senior. in japan it is much more brutal. the people there will literally work until they die. if they do retire, it is when they have permanent sickness or they have 3 years left of their life.

I understand this a lot. I did a career switch into software engineering because I wasn't happy in my career. Two years in and I'm ready to do something else. With the job market the way it is, I wish I would have put all this effort into starting a business instead of learning software. Hindsight is 20-20, I guess

I can't even remember how many jobs I was fired from, mind staggering but I don't give a quarter of a rat's ass about it.

So then what’s next? I was hoping to hear a plan 😢 I was laid off on August 7th 2024 as a Django developer and the job market is brutal. I have a paid-for bootcamp in the MERN stack coming up (October 21st).

Hey, great video! It's so underrated. Some well-edited videos don't get attention because the way of speaking are not very attracted , but your way of speaking is engaging and keeps viewers hooked. I'm 19 and at a crossroads, needing to choose my major and career path. I could use your long-term advice since you seem to think ahead in your videos. I have two options: 1. **Become a physician** while studying software engineering or computer science. This path offers stability and a good salary, and I can work from home or outside the hospital. 2. **Study biochemistry with a minor in software engineering or computer science**, then pursue further studies in biotech. This path excites me because it offers diverse fields to explore and the potential to make a significant impact. The first path would be in the USA, and the second in Germany. The first offers stability, while the second allows me to contribute to humanity and work in business and industry.

I only make $105k/yr as software engineer. I need at least $150k/yr

Market rates wouldn’t have that. That money will go to stock for investors & upper management, **black pill**

I hear ya... I'm somewhat the same way. Something about that 'grinding tedium' of coding just isn't what fuels ones enthusiasm for the chore. Young enough to pivot. All kinds of jobs in tech... Networking, testing, automation, or something totally in another direction. Maybe smaller contributory coding jobs on the side to keep your skills sharp and current, yet not your primary gig... But these jobs do have a way of both burning you out, or/and burning the passion you once had out of you.

Spend your time learning trading/investing - you don't need to depend on any people then.

So you prefer commuting hours to work every day and sitting in a noisy smelly environment with managers sitting in your neck vs working from home?

Businesses are mandating employees return to the office, so they can get tax depreciation on the real estate. Amazon's been letting people go who can't return
