Yeah, I too can contest that the book is WILD compared to its stage play adaptation. As someone who has read the book, the broadway musical did some *serious* sanitation. The book in of itself is not just sexually explicit (if not downright raunchy in some parts), it’s also VERY political. So political it’d make the anti-woke crowd of RU-vid lose any last semblance of sanity (if they had any) they had left. The play touched on it in some parts, but the book goes deeper. ***Minor spoilers coming up if you haven’t read the book*** If I recall correctly, Animals that have sentience, like Dr. Dillamond or the Cowardly Lion, who could speak and live among humans, are treated as second class citizens and discriminated against. Dr. Dillamond is brutally murdered so Elphaba takes up arms and becomes an activist and finds out the Wizard is kind of fascistic (like he has secret police called “The Gale Force”) and tries to rebel against him. And when Dorothy arrives in Oz, she’s basically a true innocent just thrown in the midst of the political upheaval, who literally just wanted to apologize being in the house that dropped on Nessarose, and when Elphaba realizes that Dorothy’s not some secret agent out to kill her, she’s thrown aback. Anywho, all this to say, the book’s wild. How they plan to adapt or further sanitize some of the darker elements in there on the movie adaptation will be very interesting…
I absolutely love the book. I'm not a musical fan so haven't seen the Broadway show. I wish they'd just made a movie based on the book instead of the musical.
idk maybe i’m just a snobbish hater but the use of cgi for a *stage musical* is crazy to me. set and costume and puppets and props add such life to the stage and it’s unsurprising but disappointing that it’s not going to be translated to the film. it just feels so impersonal
Just to clarify some things here, they built multiple insanely huge and elaborate sets for this movie with the biggest being emerald city where every single random shop you could walk by would be fully fleshed out and decorated, the wizards giant head is also a practical prop. I think the cgi of the movie is just adding to what a group of incredibly talented people already made. (didn't even mention the millions of tulips they planted for the movie)
They literally avoided as much use of cgi as possible, making all the sets and props and landscapes… ffs they planted over a mil tulips, build the train and the emerald city 😂 did you even watch any interviews
you want them to make a fantastical musical about a flying witch and flying monkeys on... stage sets? Then go see the play. This is a movie version. It's big and expansive and makes the world feel like an actually WORLD. It has flying and magic and talking animals. If you don't want to see that done in the language of cinema, don't see it.
I saw at least one trailer that seems to imply it's not a musical at all. Just a snippet of "Defying Gravity" over the end, like it's a typical pop song added to the trailer. It's like Hollywood didn't learn from Sweeney Todd that people who don't want to see a musical will be incensed if they are tricked into it.
Fourth Comment! I just watched a 22 Minute Video about a Musical I know nothing about! It was certanly something! Also, wtf is up with your weird Popcorn bucket culture over in the US? In germany you just get a fucking Paperbag or Cardboard and that's it. The fancyest buckets we get are out of cheap Metal with a print to a current movie, last one I saw was about Wonka, but have not been in a big Cinema for a long time.
I think the second act of the original musical is too rushed, and some characters decisions is a bit odd, so it may be a smart move to split it into two parts for the movie adaptation.
ok so I respect you're opinion but here's something id like to point out :) -I feel that everyone is excited for this movie, its doing great in pre-sales, so maybe not being excited is a you thing -new songs are going to be added! but just for part 2, however some songs from part 1 are going to be longer, and yes, they are written by Stephen Schwartz - CRAZY that you think its mostly CGI, only the animals are CGI, everything was built as a SET, they used almost zero green-screens ( the only green screen used for part one was for defying gravity) they literally build emerald city, the forest, THEY PLANTED 9 million tulips for one scene to create the set for the Land of Oz, so you can stop worrying about that. -DR dillamonzd can't be a hybrid, he's an ANIMAL - THE COLOR THING its something for the first trailer (the one you're using) but the new trailers have more vivid, bright and bold colors, they clearly listened to the complains. - I feel you're nitpicking on VERY LITTLE things, like the "anime" thing, im not fluent in English and I understood "enemy" -the marketing thing makes sense, they clearly want to be the new barbie, which imo its a good thing, but that's not related to the movie at all.. - the reason why theyre splitting the movie is because they didn't want to cut any song, and I totally understand that - one of you're complains is that there isn't enough set up and pay off, but that's why its going to be 2 hours long, because they're going to make it feel like a stand alone movie, not like a split story -ofc they're going to show defying gravity !!! I keep hoping they’ll salvage the marketing by not going so All-In on Defying Gravity being the ticket seller…In a perfect world (to ME) they’d pre-release their version of Wizard & I or What Is This Feeling (or even Popular!!) to start building hype for this being a musical, but if anything, they’re probably hiding the fact they trunkated some of the songs
I recently went to throwback cinema at the movie theatre to see Rear Window and the first thing that stuck out to me was the intricacy of the set they used. I was in awe! And I'm not even a big cinema fan or something like that. I just really loved it. And it made me long for a time when movies weren't just fake images. All of our creative avenues in this modern age are so freakin fake. I long for tangible fantasy worlds

When you said to think about a movie marketing it's final scene, my mind immediately when to the trailer to Morbius using the film's post credit scene as it's primary marketing...not a great sign now that I think about it.
There was even a video that'd showed off the set construction and whatnot. Seeing that and I was stunned of how cool to see that after so long. As for the CG, I'd have to bet about around 20% would be used, especially for the Animals.

I Have been a huge fan of wicked since I was a teenager and now I’m in my 30s. So I am excited about the film, but also cautious. Because as someone who has been a fan of musical theater, my whole life I know that most of the time movie musicals are not as good as stage musicals. Also, it’s been a really long time since I have read the book so I don’t remember it completely but I do remember that there are a lot of characters that are not in the stage production. So I wonder if they’re either gonna show them or they’re gonna Characters who are in the stage musical take their parts. I’m both curious and nervous about that aspect. and I agree about the CGI. Some CGI is fine. But some movies tend to go overboard. I would’ve been perfectly fine if they had a man and a girl costume like the original Wizard Of Oz movie had had a lion costume. I’m sure some people would’ve complained about that. but any anyone who is a fan of The Wizard Of Oz? Probably would’ve appreciated it if done well.
I agree with you in everything that you said, except about the goat man. Not everyone, not every company, knows how to work and treat animals. So, most of the movies that uses CGI to make animals look weird, yeah, but I prefer to look weird than they treat badly some animals.
Well if the track list for the sound track is any indication they haven’t cuz a single song but as a movie they have to write new music if they want any of it nominated for an Oscar or any award this season. I didn’t seem any new track titles in the soundtrack list but they also could be hiding them till they actually release the soundtrack. But there absolutely will be new music and Steven is doing it

Even if it was slime green and just artificial colouring I’m used to green food… green soups and sauces. Spinach, broccoli etc is green. But I’ve never seen naturally pink food at least if it’s cooked properly.

I stopped being excited about it when I read they’re doing live vocals, that’s how they ruined my beloved Les mis. Also, the second act is insane and it think it would benefit from more time to develop the plots and characters but this is the golden ago of tv, right? Why not make it a mini series? Then having each piece feel like only part of a larger story makes sense. Also, hard agree on the marvelization of cinema, what are we doing?!?!
I mean sometimes works benefit from having long run times- but who wants to sit through a 4-5 hour film? I mean look at lord of the rings- all of them together I wana say clocks in at around 12 hours but its generally acclaimed as a masterclass. The most compelling argument I've seen for splitting it (and ignoring the "part 1" in the marketing) is that Wicked Part 2 is just going to be titled "the wizard of oz". A straight up remake with Wicked as its prequel. Maybe even a CGI judy garland face if we're really lucky.
No… That’s not why at all… Part 1 is just going be act 1 of the musical, they’re not calling it “Part 1” in marketing because they’re basically marketing it as a stand alone movie with “Part 2” being a sequel.

Ill be 100% with ya on my thoughts, id finished the book a couple of months ago and i can only think the first part will have the first two parts of the book and i do believe it would end with Defying Gravity as youd pointed out. To tell the truth, id never seen the broadway in person and thos movie will give me a taste of such and already ordered an early access to the film. Ill more or less have an opinion of my own once im done with it or watch it again of the weekend for a deep dive and whatnot. Some of the things youve shown, i didnt pay attention to cause i dont use stuff like Twitter or BlueSky anymore and i have to ask, where have ya seen that mac and cheese? As green cheese goes, reminds me of green colored foods like itd happened with Shrek. And the controversy, as it goes, im trying my hardest to ignore some of them cause some would range from not my problem until something setious comes up.
