The main issue with that of course being it has all the downsides of Classic paint such as poor coverage at appropriate thinness of paint especially on the yellow and white
Add a few drops of red ink into your basecoat colour. This makes them way 'redder' and also stops them from looking so orange if you paint them in the old GW style. I can't wait to follow along with this!
That's so awesome. Jazza don't forget to give your dad and mom a big hug, it sounds like they're really beautiful people just form the small stories you and shad tell
I've recently done my own personal project collecting 2nd edition stuff (which was my 40k start) amd I purposefully painted them far brighter than I would nowadays and it was really refreshing doing that. You can still use modern techniques and products but just lightning up your pallette gives that old school vibe.
I do wish jazza at least intro’ed more of the ttt videos, just to get him in and then see his reaction to the result, it would really add more colour to the videos, after all we followed this channel for jazza, not that I don’t like the others but jazza just has such a presence on camera
I would not use Streaking Grime BUT: Get some "Old Style" Paints, like the Nostalgia88 or Coat d'arms, use Zenithal Painting styles through the airbrush (Like, Red Basecoat, Brighten up with Orange and Put some layers ontop of it) and use Black Oilwash for some nice, clean and simple black lining.
watching jazza lose his mind over old blood angels minis warms my heart. As a fellow blood angel player seeing the old sculpts is just awesome. I would recommend squidmar video on how to do blood angels. It is a alot of blending on top of a contrast base but it still looks rad as hell, cant wait to see the army progress!
Great to see all this classic stuff! Nothing beats the nostalgia hit from painting minis from your childhood, it was the golden age of gaming for all of us, proper special place 😁
Man. Just hearing Jazza talking about Blood Angels reminds me of watching his old tutorial videos during lunch when I had no friends. Oh how nostalgia is such a wonderfully-painful thing
I have to say, seeing the flashes of those old animations brought back truck loads of memories of middle school and a simpler time. The paladin series was still, to this day, still really cool.
This has me reminiscing about my own blood angels army that I sadly sold off. The 3rd edition box set captain was incredible but for me, Dante was my absolute pride and joy. I took so long trying to paint him up really well (as a novice 13 year old) and even though it wasn't to a good standard, it was the best paintjob I'd done and I'll never forget it. *wipes tear*
love being subscribed to your channel for years and years and hearing stories getting retold over and over but always with a little more detail each time
I have the second and third edition starter box and a heap of 40k sitting in my kitchen. That and a heap of 40k mini's. I ran goblin green, and flocked bases. Can't wait to see these painted up.
If I had a penny every time I've seen a father who used to have a blood Angel's army on this platform I'd have 2 Pennys Which isn't a lot but it's strange that it happened twice
Midwinter minis second edition box set videos, especially the most recent dark angels video are really good at showing classic looking paint jobs that have a flair of modern techniques
I also started with blood angels and I am about to play them tomorrow with my friend, I will be playing tau, my team mate will be playing blood angels with a custom Kitten from Text To Speech. Congrats on the ten years, you're awesome Jazza. Cheers to another 10
For painting ideas, coat d'arms paints are very close to the old school games workshop paints if you wanted an original feel to your minis. Just a thought.
I remember when both the Dark Angels and Blood Angels were in 1 codex, The Angels of Death way back in 2nd addition, in fact my first army was Dark Angels
YES I had a BLOOD EAGLE Army, ( based off the Blood Angels ) I found a box with a couple of them and all the eagle stuff I added to them. I thought I had sole them all off.. and I regret it as well so finding the few I did made me very happy! Look forward to seeing what you come up with.. please share. If you like I can find a way to show off my old Blood Eagles with you if you like.
hey mate, the old colours used for blood angels in their new equivalents are Mephiston red, agrax shade first highlight evil sunz with a final highlight of fire dragon bright
@Tabletop Time: Midwinter Mini's channel had a video about buying the original Citadel Paint set and revitalizing them with a vortex mixer and some thinner/medium and made the paints work like they were new! You should really consider using the old paints or even the NEW old paints made by Coat d'Arms to do these; of course jazz it up with modern techniques like some clean panel lining and gem effects from some of the wonderful new paints from Vallejo or Citadel; where I think you could really shine is by doing dry pigments on the bases and legs of your soldiers and even making some 3d models of jet propelled effect (smoke or fire lifting the jetpack units into the air off their bases a bit for dynamic poses)
I have enjoyed using zenithal highlighting my primed models and then spraying blood angels contrast paint through an airbrush. Gives you a quick but very clean base to work off when painting space marines.
I approve of your army choice. Also, the new Mephiston model is posed that way because of the artwork for him in the original Blood Angels / Dark Angels "Angels of Death" codex, which was before your time.
OK... Jazza.. YOU WIN! Phase 4 is LIVE. After all This time, I am finally subbed to and watching all the channels!... Jazza... Jazza Music... Jazza Studios... Tabletop Time and TabletopTime Roleplay! If your goal releasing all these 10 year Anniversay videos was to draw interest to the other channels to grow.. YOU WIN!
If you're looking for good paints, I recommend coat d'arms paints. They are exactly the same as the old GW paints from back in the day. Best of luck with the army!
3rd edition was always bright, you should paint your army to be hyper vibrant with plenty of highlights of fluorescent red and yellow. Have you seen the shading with colour method, where for red you would make the shadows a blue/purple instead of just a dark red or browned red. It makes colour really pop and would really fit the retro-modern aesthetic you said you wanted.
I think what you would need to look at would be to use the old 2nd and 3rd edition colour scheme with the black trim and hazard stripes, potentially accompanied by the black decorative flames and chest eagles, and - of course - the blue devastator helmets. Goblin Green bases maybe, but you could try to texture them in a more modern way.
I'm in favor of doing black rims on the bases. Going goblin green is fun, and classic, but you already went into painstaking detail to resurrect your personal army from your childhood. It be a shame to "not" do black rims, like you did originally. In the end, it's your project, and I hope you will enjoy repainting these beautiful mini's. Glad to see the Jazza Blood Angels resurrected. :D
This story is so emblematic of the archetypal 40k experience. We fell in love with the hobby as kids, and for one reason or another fell out of it. I personally discovered girls and spent the next ten years obsessed with that hobby. Now I am in my thirties I came back into the hobby and I have such a soft spot for the classic 3rd edition hand sculpted models. I have a burgeoning Blood Angels army fit for 1999 that I intend to use the Duncan Rhodes painting guide on. He has a great tutorial on youtube in making a classic 3rd edition Blood Angels paint scheme. You should check it out!
I just got my box of minatures from when I was 12 from my mums house 2nd edition 40K box set , then I have a bunch of the metal minatures from the late 80's early 90's , blood angels army and they are badly painted , so ive ordered more paint and new brushes and some acetone and meth spirits to clean them up and repaint them, ive also got an airbrush which i didnt have when I was 12 , really looking forward to painting them. Lightning claws terminators bro , got them too :P
I found my old Blood Angels in the closet as everything shut down and decided that was my project. Had to strip everything, the old paint job was atrocious. And now... not great, but serviceable! I ended up even getting a Sang Guard box set to make a more impressive 'version' of Dante, painted white (too much gold) with wings and all the fun bits..
If making videos about something you love gives you the capability to write the supplies for it off as a business expense... brilliant! More power to you and keep making the awesome vids!
looking forward to seeing how this progresses i have my original BA army by didnt get round to painting after collected with the exception of a drop pod and vindicator, looking for any shortcuts that can be touched up to a higher standard later down the line. My theme was based on the Angels Encarmine colours. All the best for the process your about to go through, thank you for the content.
I'd suggest modern paints with classic colour scheme, Duncan Rhodes did a video on it a while back with some fantastic looking marines that i've used as reference for some of mine. (Using Evil Sunz Scarlet as the main colour for the armour, giving a brighter red than the modern Blood Angel look)
Ouch, I feel the feels of having given up that old army - I've never cleaned house completely, but there have been odds and ends I decided 'I don't really need that', and miss nowadays. Scouring ebay for a whole vintage force is a bit out of my league, but I've been building an Emperor's Children army recently and peppering in a few old minis I've dug out of long-forgotten boxes, a first edition Space Hulk hunched-up plastic terminator, an old metal Chaos Renegade, even a version one Keeper of Secrets. Back in the day I started with Blood Angels too (I got into the hobby via Space Hulk, so it was inevitable) before repainting them as a homebrew chapter (still got them, thankfully, on their goblin green bases), so I'm really looking forward to seeing your army take shape.
Your gonna have to follow the how to paint from old school Citadel books and the Blood Angels codex. Then, add just those modern touches to take it from classic to fantastic.
I finally have disposable income and a 3d printer. I finally have the army of my dreams. Its a wonderful moment to finally be able to make the army you have wanted for years. Im glad to see you have that moment yourself jaza. Have fun. And I cant wait to see the final product!
That’s exciting. I still have the White Dwarf that featured that Death Company release! Looking forward to seeing the resurrected Blood Angels project.
