I agree. No need to make a long confusing video abt it. Just be straight and to the point that he has awesome gear to purchase and give us the link. He starts video off saying digital is “nailing it” so off with the tube amps and cabs and then ends video with there is nothing like a tube amp in the room pushing air through speakers 🤷‍♂️

You guys take this stuff personal. I dont mean you are butthurt. He is passing off a LOT of information that has nothing to do with the the title. You realize he pists these videos for education? For people to hear amps theyll never own. To understand how to dial in different tones associated with specific amps. Plus he says if something falls short of the hype to prevent others from potential buyers remorse. Its not always about the vantage point youre viewing from.

Definitely made some great points here. I don't see the digital vs analog as a "YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE" sort of thing. Each is a good option for specific applications. Just did a bunch of fly-in dates with an AMT distortion pedal/Quilter rig and it was great. Got home and played a couple shows with my Splawn Quickrod and it was also great. I look at it less as a "which one is better" and more like "oh cool, now I have some flexibility to make certain situations a little easier".

A Quilter Microblock and a Joyo British are so cheap, one wonders why everyone doesn't have one. 45w on a modern stage is plenty for most. AMT Legend series. The 2s are brilliant, a nice clean available as well as your Peavey, Engl, Mesa etc. Speaker emulated or not or both. An HX FX or Stomp and you're in "all you need" territory to cover a ton of ground.

I always write with real amps. Moving air at volume makes the writing process more fun. I am going to hold onto most of my amps simply because its awesome to have a piece of tonal history. When I record I blend digital and analog. Both are awesome. At the end of the day an amp wall looks cooler than a laptop ;)

I have a now ancient MacBook Pro and I have way less into any one of my amps. I like not just moving air but LOUD if I can. I've gotten publishable results from amp plugins, and did quite a bit with Tech 21 DIs. But, when I had the option? Lol I'll get in the booth with the half stack. YBA1 full throttle, in the room with the drummer. The interaction with the amp and guitar is part of the sauce, especially leads. Feedback is part of my style, and you don't get that with headphones.

Late last year I bought my first 5150 + a 212 JUST for the experience of owning one (Actually posted this on your belligerent group around that time). Everytime I turn it on and boost it it puts a smile on my face. BUT with that said, for recording purposes I have my plugins for riffs and ideas on the spot. Funnily enough, my favorite has also been the Josh Middleton suite. I love how incredibly meticulous and detailed that dude is as a player and a tone guru. His digital block letter model felt like my own block letter miced up in the best possible way. Technology really is incredible now, but I don't think I'll sell my 5150 anytime soon. It's too much of an occasion and spectacle to me just plugging it in and being assaulted with the sizzle, the low end, the air.

Solid State is a good middle ground. I have a modern Peavey Bandit 112 and it sounds good. Since it emulates a tube amp, it breaks up when you crank it. They're loud, sound great, are cheap to get used, and don't take up a ton of space. I use that as well as plugins and I don't feel as if I'm missing out on a real tube amp.

I use plugins on my PC when I am trying to keep volume down. From what I hear, digital does not sound the same. So this leads me to ask a question, When it comes to guitar tone, speakers make the biggest difference, how do I know I am getting a true representation of a Mesa 4x12 with the studio monitors I am using? Wouldnt the quality of the monitor make a huge difference? Edit** I bought an amp off Kyle and can say it was extremely well packed and got here in perfect condition. Thanks Kyle, finally got a Mesa back in my collection.

Live, a tube amp will never be replaced for the killer sound. Recording is where modelers are king and I'll stand by that and even in that place, axe fx and kemper are boomer modelers and now everyone uses plugins. It's also insanely easier carrying around a 50w amp than a huge modeler 6-8 unit rack flight case
@pwrmac7600
@pwrmac7600 Год назад
In a professional environment I would say it is the exact opposite. Tube amps rule the studio because they aren't being abused by the rigors of the road, and modeling is taking over the road because of logistics. Shipping around a single rack is much easier and cheaper than shipping around amps cabs and mics. A lot of touring acts are already using modeling live, and I predict many more will convert every day.

Dude you should, if you haven’t, make Impulse Responses on all of your cabs before you sell them off. I’d be going nuts to build custom libraries if I had access to a collection like that. So cool to see though, and it’s wild to see where modeling is heading, things are sounding pretty rad!

Like what you like. That's the important thing. Something people forget is that pretty much every piece of music you've listened to in the last 40 or so years has gone through an ADC and/or DAC at some point in the signal chain. Whether that's modelers or digital FX in the recording, DSP at the soundboard at a live show, or simply listening to music on a format different that what it was recorded to. There's no analog audio on the internet. CDs aren't analog. Many tape decks and turntables had digital componentry on them, especially modern ones. Even modern vinyl records themselves usually were recorded and mixed digitally and only sent out through the DAC in mastering. Short of some prohibitively expensive direct to vinyl/direct to tape gimmick for an album, the last truly analog sounds we've made were done back in the 60s and maybe the 70s. The more i've lusted over gear, the more i've learned about how these pieces of electronics actually function, and the more i learned about how music is distributed to the listener, the more i realize that i care about the sound, not the thing that makes the sound. If I can get something that sounds like Three Days Grace's One X guitar tone (as an example), then that's what i want. To me, it doesn't matter if it's a VH4 and whatever cab Barry was using (along with all the post production involved), a solid state knock off amp, a VST plugin, or some other digital model. I'd play through a bottle of soy sauce if it got me that sound
@MK-oz2lf
@MK-oz2lf Год назад
I'm in the middle of this situation I think. I have a Quilter Mach 3 200 watt head (weighs 4 lbs) that is analog solid state as a clean PLEXI platform and I use a Walrus Eras for high gain and boost with an overdrive to tighten the low end and it has worked for me. Kyle, thanks to you I took the plunge and got the Eras and the GupTech PedEQ pedal and they work amazing with my Quilter head. I plug the head to an IR and boom I am in my current high gain tone heaven. I can always change pedals if I want a different tone.

I did the ZÖTTER stuff on a Toneblock 201. Tweed tones out of the Quilter but mostly ran a Joyo Oxford into the fx return. Tauren & Carcosa for more filth. Wampler has GREAT dirt, there's the Tech 21 Character series, AMT Letter series, and more at higher budgets like the Amptweaker Tightmetal, a 5150IAB from the og designer. All analog options are endless. Digital, now you're just spoiled.

I grew up using 5150's and Dual Recs out of V30 4x12s, but now I only own a helix and mostly run through VSTs when playing at home. Honestly, I love tube amps, but the value and quality of plugins are so incredible that now I see tube amps the same way I see luxury wall art. It looks cool, it makes you feel good for owning it, but it isn't practical in any way. So to me, the only reason I will ever buy another tube amp is to play it as a novelty or use it as a room or stage backdrop. It's unfortunate tbh.

Yes to further Tone X exploration. My current life situation 100% relies on volume control, spacial limitations, portability, and total cost as hardliners factors. As a result, the luxury of a cranked tube amp is unobtainable for at present. Digital is literally my only option at present, and I'm damn grateful that format has developed in the ways it has recently. I can easily live out of a van as a nomad, and still easily write, record, and distribute my music even under those conditions.

I love both, they're all tools. I cant record loud tubes at home, so digital works, and in the mix, very difficult to tell the difference. Its a mental thing too. When im playing a modeller im not thinking of amp in the room tone, I'm thinking studio tone, so the whole air pushing thing does cross my mind. Then other times i need a live amp for a gig where in that case ill use the modeller in to the effect return and get the tube power amp stage, with the amp model im familiar with. Or if its a simple gig, just the amp and a little tuner. No need to pick a side, use the best tool for you for the moment!

I'm an old timer. Been playing guitar since 1987, when there weren't many options available. I remember when the first modeling amp came out, the Johnson Millennium. It wasn't complete garbage but it definitely didn't replicate the amps it was trying to sound like. That being said I have seen leaps and bounds in technology as of late and i honestly believe that within the next 10 years the chore of lugging around heavy tube amps and the exorbitant costs associated with them will be a thing of the past. Not to mention the maintenance costs that come with them. If and when digital amps can successfully duplicate the warm overdrive of a tube amp, I'll be the first on board. It will be a win for everyone. Everyone except for boutique amp makers. The sound of their $4,000 amp will be available for free, as a download.

Modeling is great for metal chug, but it's not nearly as convincing for leads or for cleaner/broken-up tones. And I say that as someone who's used Fractal gear to record my own material for a very long time. I'm making the opposite journey--thanks to quality IRs and reactive load boxes, you can record great amp tones that you'd never be able to get with modeling/profiling. The sound quality of my mixes improved immensely when I moved my reamping from modelers to real amps. Now the problem is being able to afford a few nice amps! That said, I do still track and write using my Fractal for guitar monitoring. No sense in burning up tubes while I try to figure out what the heck I'm trying to do.

This really seems to be a discussion about practicality. No one who owns a tube amp appears to be willing to go to owning zero tube amps. Some think it's more practical to take sims on the road with a bunch of different reasons. Some are saying that they can get the sound of owning many many heads, while only owning one or two. Many are saying that sims/captures yield better recording results than what they can get with a mic in their recording situations. Most people just don't have the money or space for the tube amp and cabinet collection that they would really like, but sims let them get a little taste of what that must be like.

I believe it's going to be like vinyl records vs CD's vs downloads. The latest invention/ trend will dominate the market; but there will always be a demand for the more antiquated forms as well. Vinyl isn't going away, and neither will tube amps.

As long as there is no Peavey Ultra Plus 120 plugin I’m holding onto my baby haha But, I’m in your same line of thought. I love my amp and pedals and I’ll use them whenever BUT I have started with digital stuff way before having my “real deal” gear. From plugins to my Ampero with a solid state poweramp I love that stuff as well and I can use them in my home, where as my amp is in my rehearsal space. Love them both.

As much as I like having multiple 4x12 and 2x12 cabs and tube heads, I decided to downsize a few months ago. I am down to one 50 watt tube head and one 4x12 cab for band/live settings. I have a Boss Katana MkII 100 watt 1x12 at home for practice and I just run my pedal board through it. Does it sound as good as a big tube amp? No. Does it need to for at home use? Not to me. I am looking at getting some type of Helix to replace my pedals. I also want to have a lightweight alternative to a full pedal/amp/cab rig if need be. I will always have at least one tube amp and cab. Kyle, if you had to pick only one head and one cab out of your collection to keep, what would they be? 🤔

A digital sound is simply a single audio photo. A real tube amp makes 3.2 million audio photos until the first one will re-appear. It is the same for a digital piano one sound repeated every time you hit the same note.

Now days, I use all my tube amps in the studio. For portability It HAS been a Quilter Tone Block 200 with a ISP Theta preamp. Recently got the BluGuitar Iridium. WOW that changed the game for me. Now because of the BluGuitar Iridium I am thinking about selling my heavy tube amps. It does the Fender to Marshall 800 and beyond. I am not finding a need for my heavy expensive tube amps anymore. As for the digital stuff...I have tried some products. Sounds great recording but misses the mark live in front of a 4x12. The feel is different. Dose the audience notice. I bet not. The guitarist does.

I got good headphones, a good stereo, and computer, and listened to and watched many videos to make my decision. I never heard them in person, but got a real close idea what they sounded like from well recorded youtube videos. And learned how they work.

Great vid Bro. I'm an analogue guy but I do own a Positive Grid Bias Amp 2 . Everything out there can be used in many different ways. The one big difference I see is that using the modeling gear in a live situation can be a nightmare if the FRONT OF HOUSE tech isn't familiar with how to deal with mixing a direct feed. In DETROIT we've got an army of HELEN KELLERs at the helm. Very few sound tech are capable of actually delivering a good mix, let alone, a blend of digital and anologue feeds. The good sound techs in Detroit are busy. The rest....well...those are the ones that punish the audiences in Detroit. So, for as much as I'd like to use a modeling amp in a live situation, it's pretty scary because of the lack of skill in audio reinforcement here. Good luck everyone.

I am very new to amp simulation plugins, but when I saw Neural Amp Modeler being a free way to capture and play through amps I was on it. So my first experience was great and tried amps that I knew because I have them (jcm 800, 2000). And here in Belgium it's possible to find a good deal on a used marshall, but a mesa for example is more expensive and harder to find. So digital captures were a great way to see what they are all about. And it actually made me want one. It had me looking for a single rectifier and recently found a rect-o-verb 50 like in your shot. So I find plugins useful to determine a sound that I like, and I'm sure that once I start recording I'll be doing some of it as a DI like you mentioned to easily 'reamp' a recording. So for professional use I get it, but as a belligerent amateur myself, I still want my favorite amps in the room.

Good stuff man, there is certainly something to be said for tubes. Jamming in a band with headphones is definitely not the best experience, I can't wait until we can actually jam in a room with loud as hell gear. Also brought the Tonex to the most recent jam and it was a pain in the hole to get dialed in as far as levels and so on, the UI is terrible as a live unit, more of a bedroom jammer's dream unit. Video coming soon! Hope you're doing well! Cheers man

It's not about analog sounds better, it's about convenience. I love my tube amp, but I use it only when I can play it loud. Otherwise, I am playing at low bedroom level (or even through headphones, cause family is sleeping), so going digital is way more convenient for this situation.

It's funny because I have always rode the fence. Truthfully, in the beginning I used modeling in my home studio because I couldn't make all the noise recording with a 100 watt amp in my home. And the attenuators of the day had a pretty gnarly effect on your tone. So I used amps live and modeling at home for recording. Then the modern load boxes came out an d now I find myself using both. Amps via load box through my axefx for irs. And my axefx on its own for modeling. I love both options! And isn't that what we all want. Options for great tone regardless of how it's made.

But, at home, when I just want to plug in and write, i just used Neural DSP plug ins. At this point, ones not really any better than another, its just a matter of whats more convenient at the time.

Hey Kyle, I can see your point. I have played guitar for 30 years now, and seen trends come and go. I do not think these digital products are going away. I have a BOSS Katana, and it is amazing. I have tried the Helix, and AxeFx. They are very good as well. But if you are a recording artist, I would hold on to your gear. At least some of it. Sometimes an amp sim just doesn't cut it, and analog gear can give you the "feel" that makes you get a perfect take while recording. The Neural Amp Modeler is amazing (and FREE!) and it works just like the ToneX. But it is so close, that i cannot tell the difference anymore. So when I go to record? It will be the NAM app.

Only about half way into the video as of leaving this comment, but I need to offer this before it leaves my brain: I don't think tube amps will ever go away. The ease of access for digital amps is amazing but they always need a reference point. If that reference point stops being made, then the digital amps will take a massive dive which will then require the main analog amps to be made again. I feel it's a symbiotic relationship. I am an avid Tonex enjoyer, but the Tonex isn't worth anything without the amps it profiles.

I think there is a middle group which is Kemper owners who bought Kemper to profile their favourite amp and have similar tone on the stage. I am dissapointed with Kemper, company approach to our feedback, profiling accuracy (rather tone than feel, weird), but it seems it is the only hardware right which is easy to imitate in-room sound (it has dedicated poweramp, and you can buy special DI box to capture speaker out) I hope one day we will see some commercial HW platform/profiler for the free NAM software which is getting great reviews lately

Good video, I think the future is mostly digital. I went digital a couple of years ago, with a mk2 Katana head, then I got a GT-1000, and I've dabbled with iRig and Amplitube. It all sounds great at any volume, where as my old 30w Boogie sounded sh*t with the volume at 2 or 3. Even my current #4 Orange head sounds sh*t at 7w setting at neighbour-friendly volumes. I have a bad back, so these days I go to the rehearsal studio with just my GT-1000 and a guitar. Happy days, and if the GT is good enough for Nita Strauss, it's definitely more than enough for me :D Also (stealth edit!) less amps means more money for more guitars!
