OMG Antoine! Chasing down a Warp Speed IMOCA in the middle of the Southern Ocean - with incredible light and angles... then landing the drone in your hand like a butterfly with sore feet. Amazing!

Best quote is the new name of the skipper: Big B! That's an adequate name for Boris who leads the boat and the crew so fantastically through the southern ocean. Antoine, his skills, his enthusiasm and his joy at his successes together with the crew, is unique in the fleet. All the other OBRs can learn a lot from him. Without him, everything would be nothing!

The drone videos deserve a 🏆! Is there a Oscar for drone docus? If not, we should do some fund raising to present one to Antoine.

The best comment today. That's what my "Freudian id" told me this morning. As a technician, I would be interested to know the load limits on the mast and outrigger. Is the new IMOCA, with the many sensors that have been laminated in, largely immune to the way Kevin's old PRB folded up at the Vendee Globe, as long as you observe these limits and the waves don't conspire against you?

The crazy thing is, with the Vo65 and Vo70 before, the sailors were on deck all the time with little to no cover. They hadn't a big protective cockpit, or autopilot and were diving in the waves way more. Still, this is so awesome to watch and the imocas look amazing when they fly like this. It's so cool what can be captured with drones nowadays.

As I sometimes think: "It's hard to take a bad photo of a beautiful (whatever) car/woman/boat/physique/scene/etc." But SOME photography and videography accentuates already epic scenes or subjects. An idea is a live overlay of the boat speed, wind angle and average wave height at the bottom of the drone shot, so you can see "This is how the boat is doing in THIS sea with THIS wind at THIS speed." In fact, a FEW cameras that show under the hull looking foward, under the bow looking backward, AND the drone could probably be marketed separately for use by offshore sailing schools. it would be both fascinating and instructive to see "Oh, at 33kt, you have THIS much hull out of the water in this wind speed and sea state, with this much angle of list." Curious, I am, at the effect of foils that are even larger in their bend radius, so they EFFECTIVELY widen the boat and make it far harder to tip to far while also allowing it to use more power from the wind. I know the tradeoff without having Adamantium™ as the construction material is more drag, but if you have rigging that can stand more horsepower, what IS the limit? I am guessing streamlined anti-submersion bulbs on the foils that normally protrude from the water would make it an actual outrigger, violating rules, the moment the bulbs hit the water, yes? But, hey, ideas are like shotgun loads, sometimes. You shoot them out there without knowing which ones will actually hit the target clay! PS I wonder if speeds are climbing to the point where hydrodynamic hull aeration would provide a net decrease in drag.

Most fun and most energy! Whoever decided to add a drone to the boat hit a bull's eye for certain. Can you imagine the effect on other teams' morale if the Malizians took turns water skiing while in the race? I have a question, though. Why is the mains'l not at full mast? Too much power/leverage/sail stress/mast stress to deal with? Also, if you had an even bigger, heavier "keel bulb" could you not go even faster with no risk of tipping too far to l'ward? I have wondered about the tradeoff of overall weight versus ability to handle additional horsepower stresses on the "above the waterline" portions of the boat. More power means stronger/possibly heavier (more aramid to add toughness maybe?) mast and then of course, rigging, and then, of course, sails, etc. LOL at the thought of everyone on the crew having to look like a professional bodybuilder to haul all that "canvas" around when needed. (Look at some of Lyman Daily's "Max Rep, Mr. Astrotitan 2206" cartoon strips for a visual reference.) And the increased mass of food needed onboard... But, just imagine if you were able to have so much keel leverage and low enough cg that you could have any size mast and sail you wanted. Ripping across the water/through wave faces at 50kt would require a very hydrodynamically-shaped fine-entry prow to prevent the feeling of plowing through brick walls over and over again for tens of thousands of miles!

Love it! "...drove it like she stole it..." Melizianos, Top Guns alla you! I just keep smiling and watching and smiling and willing you on to a safe arrival. I once raced across the Atlantic in a 51' and when we 5 had made 200 miles the day, could leave 'the office'. Nobody ever did. Making the boat go faster is just SO compelling. Thank you soooo much for your courage and camaraderie and sharing this ride. What a show! Go! You can win this! 🎉

A boat is planing well when you ask yourself, "I wonder if they put more weight in the bow if it would go faster?" (Like a surfer goes further towards the nose of the board for more speed.)

Never in history has the Southern Ocean seemed so seductively "pacific" in its behavior! I bet there are people who sail edging towards this thought pattern: "Hey, I might try sailing that now!!!" People who have never once considered doing so in the past!
