Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

See, I did understand all this - Only, if that's indeed the case, why were people running away from future Ruby? I guess I can accept there's like, witchcraft involved, but it just wasn't really well explained. And also, if Ruby was the one to stop the Roger ap Gwylliam, what happens in the new restored timeline where she doesn't? I would say that maybe stepping on the shrine was the thing that made him become Prime Minister in the first place, but then, the Doctor was talking about him almost causing Nuclear war BEFORE ever stepping on the shrine. Is it just because he's the Doctor and could somehow sense the aborted timeline?

The lady isn't "Mad Jack". In the episode Roger ap Gwylliam reveals that as a kid he was called "Mad Jack". The fairy circle was created to keep "Mad Jack" sealed away. Because the Doctor broke it, "Mad Jack" was unleased. AKA they were in a timeline where Roger ap Gwylliam causes a nuclear war. The 73 yards woman then stalks Ruby in an effort to influence her in such a way to fix things. Which she does, she causes the woman to whisper into his ear and make him go mad. Then it all becomes a loop where we discover Ruby becomes the 73 yards woman. Back in 2024, old Ruby whispers to her past self "Don't step on it" and she stops the Doctor from breaking the circle. Therefore keeping "Mad Jack" (Roger ap Gwylliam) from becoming Prime Minister. It's like Turn Left, in that this caused a sort of alternate timeline in a way.

While this makes sense, it also kinda doesn't? How did a fairy circle stop him from becoming priminister? Who was the original woman if it wasn't Ruby? Why did everyone run away? This episode was so good, but it absolutely failed at the last hurdle by failing to explain anything that happened and leaving people to guess at it. It really makes me sad to say this because up until the last 5 minutes it was one of my favourite doctor who episodes of all time and I've loved all of RTD2 so far but this is honestly a case of terrible writing by getting so caught up in the story you forget to explain it to the people who are watching. Definitely my favourite of RTD 2 so far. To me this episode came across as a metaphor for the MeToo movement. Ruby had something following her but once people found out they didn’t want to associate with her anymore. The girl mentioned that the prime minister was a monster but they never went into detail on what he did to her. This was a very clever episode and I’m going to be thinking about it for a long time.

I dont think its a metaphor ror me too, its more s metaphor for political silencing. From the beginning the one person powerful enohgh to stock madjack is took out, then when he accidentally slips about wanting to fire nukes he the seduced the one person who would tell and silenced her, we dont know how, its implied its something sexual just as much as its implied he showed her his true form and tortured her. This is probably one of the most interesting episodes in the shows history. It's the first time the entire threat is never really explained or even solved. The fact whatever this thing was undid itself, it leaves it a mystery that's still and will always be a mystery in the doctor who universe, and it's not something for the doctor to figure out because he never knows it existed. Up there with the absolute best episodes the shows ever made. Maybe not as crowd pleasing as some, but as good as the best ever nonetheless.

I thought the ending was a bit odd at first but I think that the Doctor still remembering Roger ap Gwylliam is a hangover type of thing like how he still says gravity instead of mavity the first time in Wild Blue Yonder. I also think by not reading the scroll the events of the 2040’s election don’t happen and the story is just a singe contained timeline because of the broken circle which obviously in the end dosent happen the second time around. I also feel like something actually did happen and it wasn’t a wasted episode, like in turn left it’s simply a stoped timeline that the companion fixes! For me it’s the best episode in a long time!!! 💫

I totally agree. That's what I didn't get about the episode. My theory is what Kate mentioned: something to do with landing the TARDIS perception filter near the circle maybe gave Ruby those powers. I still don't know WHERE exactly the Doctor went though.
@Pooter-it4yg
@Pooter-it4yg 2 месяца назад
The Doctor breaks the circle which contains a supernatural ward against a possible terrible future then Ruby ties that future to herself by reading the ward, which also serves as a warning. At that point the possible future becomes real and the apparition appears - the spirit of herself at the point of her death having lived that future and prevented the disaster. It isn't specifically stated but 73 yards probably equals 73 years - the gap between them. The apparition is a ghost who terrifies anyone who approaches into leaving it and Ruby alone so they can avert the disaster. The time loop is finally closed by the apparition warning them not to break the circle so the possible future doesn't become reality. Therefore none of it happens, so Ruby never lives that life and the apparition doesn't appear. There is no Doctor in the disaster timeline because it's predetermined that Ruby must be alone to understand and resolve it.

@@apollovaljean3076 Well I'd argue that good writing leaves room for engagement and deliberately doesn't put it all on a plate. It makes the reader/viewer's position more satisfying. And my "gap filling" really didn't take much thought - it is actually all there to infer. Frankly I'm disheartened by the reaction of some who I think have legitimate concerns about the recent general direction of the show. Imo they rather undermine those concerns by refusing to acknowledge pretty good stuff when it does occur. it seems they're determined to dislike. Personally I've felt the intro special and the first two have been appalling childish panto - the imposition of one, far too powerful person's idea of fun. All hail the almighty showrunner... But again imo Boom was good and this was better than just good. I'm willing to see the good when it happens - I welcome it - and I'm afraid some of the naysayers don't seem capable of that. As to what's coming - I'll take it as it comes but I think Davies has exercised terrible judgement in the way he's set up most of the first half of a make or break season. For anyone confused about this brilliant episode: The lady in black was Ruby herself. She dies of old age at the end of the episode, but once she dies her ghost starts moving backwards through time (kinda like Tenet) staying at 73 yards from herself, up to the point she first arrives on the cliff with the Doctor. A recurrent theme throughout this season is how many superstitions have been given real power ever since 14 used the salt trick at the edge of creation. In the beginning of the episode, while speaking about a terrible prime minister from the future, the Doctor steps on a fairy circle which was apparently binding "Mad Jack", causing the Doctor to disappear. And Ruby begins to be haunted by her ghost which always keeps a distance of 73 yards from her but other people can approach but when they talk to her they begin to fear Ruby and retreat from her but also from the world. It is later revealed that this prime minister the Doctor was talking about goes by the nickname Mad Jack and is hell bent on launching nukes (whether the pm himself is Mad Jack itself or Mad Jack is acting through the prime minister is up to debate I think). Ruby realises she has to stop him and she does by placing her ghost next to him (by standing at 73 yards from him, the exact distance she was about to get shot by the PMs security), causing him to resign retreat from the world. In the end Ruby dies, but her spirit goes backwards through time, keeping the same distance from Ruby up to the point where she arrives on the cliff with the Doctor, and she makes her past self stop the Doctor from stepping on the circle, never releasing Mad Jack and stopping this whole alternate timeline from happening, in turn stopping her ghost from ever existing, causing it to disappear.

So I guess we're theorizing now... What if, the 73 yards lady is a witch that sealed mad jack. Therefore once they broke the seal it was in the witches interest to stop this from happening and also stopping mad jacks plan in the process. I dont think the 73 yards lady is ruby until the very end of the episode for multiple reasons: 1. Why does this timeline exist? Like why does she not instantly warn herself? 2. I dont think there is anything future ruby could say that would turn her mother against her For me that theory would fix multiple open questions for the episode. I just dont get why the yards lady didnt give her a chance to rewind time earlier. Maybe one can't become her until death

I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one. Strange things going on in a Welsh Villiage reminded me a bit of Torchwood Countrycide, and it reminded me quite a bit of that scene from Hungry Earth, where a future Amy and Rory can be seen in the distance waving to themselves in the past. I alsos got a bit of a Turn Left vibe, as well as a Star Trek vibe too (the episode where the Enterprise is caught in a time loop and Data has to remember 4 pips on Riker's collar or something like that!!!). I did really enjoyed this episode a lot though!!! I think it's the kind of story that could easily be adapted into a 3 or 4 part Mini Series...

I just read some of the other comments are apparently this is the best explanation so-far- The Doctor stepping on the fairy circle caused faires or whatever to take The Doctor away, which caused Ruby's fear of abandonment to manifest so hard that they took the literal embodiment of the old woman. People who talked to the old woman ran away screaming as a symbol of Ruby revealling the absolute worst of herself to them, similar to how those who are abandoned will often chase other people away who try to get close to them. Ruby coming back in time to save herself from being separated from The Doctor is showing how no matter how many times Ruby may be abandoned by others, she can always rely on herself. As someone who also has a history of being abandoned, I can relate to this episode if we assume that metaphor was true. I appreciate that we didn't get to see The Doctor interact with the woman, because if we saw the main hero of the entire franchise fall victim to the same psychiatric tricks as everyone else and take-off in the TARDIS never to return, it probably would have broken my sanity. Also, the scene in the hospital right before Ruby was transported back-in-time- Yeah, whatever. I wasn't planning on sleeping tonight anyway. It's not like I have work tomorrow so who cares?

I wonder if the 73 yards timeline is similar to the turn left timeline (Which was of course created by the trickster). There are a few parallels between these alternate timelines. Both are about studying some aspect of the companion character. Kate's remark about the timeline revolving around Ruby is kind of Turn left-ish as well. I also noted that the woman in the distance is kind of "unobservable", much like the beetle on Donna's back.

My only question is, the doctor mentions RGW before he breaks the circle, so he always was set to happen, so if Ruby stopped him and then that got re set so he will still be elected one day? Because if he always quits due to the woman, surely Carla or Kate would be distant of Ruby too? Idk I’m not sure what that means because the doctor even mentions RGW in the new time line at the end so what was the point of Ruby being followed and stopping him?

Enjoyed it, my thoughts are the same as everyone else pretty much. Needed to explain NOT what was said, but why people run away. And how Ruby is able to step into her old self and travel back to the starting point (unless we find out later that she's a more powerful being). I like magic being used as it has been, as long as it's not a lazy way to get out of explaining stuff. "oh, because magic" Also, nobody has mentioned that the boundary between the land and sea explains 13's different regeneration! The rules of regeneration changed because it was between land and sea? I’m also confused. I thought the episode was one of the best but the ending makes no sense. Russell says in Unleashed that we’ll never know what the woman says so I think that rules out an explanation later in the series (unless he’s lying). I get that the old woman is Ruby, but I don’t understand how she merges(?) into her on her death bed, then changes the timeline. Also the biggest question for me is if that woman is old lady Ruby, why would Ruby cause people to become super scared and run away. Why would Ruby do that? Makes no sense! And again, Russell says we’ll never know what is said in Unleashed, unless he’s lying. If he’s not lying, it’s just super lazy writing in the conclusion. The rest of it was brilliant, but the ending needs explaining later in the series, if not, then what a shame. Maybe the fact she recognised Susan Twist will be part of it.

my crackpot theory is that we will absolutely see Ap Gwilliam again and that he's the next "big-bad", maybe he's even "the one who waits" heres why: Ap Gwilliam calls himself "Mad Jack" perhaps he is a spirit that's possesed him or he is litterally him (hell of a long time to have been alive or waiting, assuming the "mad jack" thing is hundreds of years old), The Doctor breaking the fairy circle sends ruby down a path that eventually tramples Ap Gwilliam's/Mad Jack's plans to become prime minister (and destroy the world with nukes), if that ruins his career then what did Ruby stopping The Doctor breaking the circle do? Secure his power, The Doctor literally name drops Ap Gwilliam again at the end of the episode but we don't know what for this time, perhaps Ap Gwilliam/Mad Jack is some sort of god (god of time perhaps?) or supernatural being and the herald/loop Ruby was placed in, was his doing in order to secure his rise to power, it's lightly hinted at that Ruby has something going on with her with all the snow stuff so perhaps thats part of Mad Jack's doing? there is also the scene where Mad Jack gets her name before going off to the other person, perhaps thats a sort of meta way of him manipulating her or gaining information on her to use to secure his power. It's also not the first time RTD has done evil character masquerading as a politician lol.

Trying to piece things together, but I think breaking the fairy circle effectively released Mad Jack to become Gwilliam, and now that never occurs by old Ruby stopping the circle being broken. Creates bootstrap paradox issues of course, as well as leaving no explanation as to how our why The Doctor disappeared. It seems that perhaps Kate/Unit were aware that this timeline wasn't right, but there was a lot of info missing from this that could've done with explaining.

This is not only my favourite story of the RTD2 era (so far), but it's one of the best stories I've seen in the show full stop. Works so well as a horror story akin to It Follows of tapping into an universal fear we have as all good horror does. Your worst nightmare come to life (in Ruby's case, abandonment), and having to live with it as your new reality, coming to terms of it, perhaps even seeing it as a strength with the case of Roger and Albion, all without the Doctor. It was incredible. Jessie Gender's review on it has a great queer reading on the story too that only made me appreciate it even more.

It was different and unexpected. I think we have to keep reminding ourselves that the theme of this season is magic, and what that does to a science fiction universe. The point of a lot of these episodes is something is hopping that makes time and space not right and it's all leading to something. That being said, the only thing I'm left wondering is that guy going to become the Prime Minister in the future and start a nuclear war? Normally when there's a paradox, something is left that keeps the change that resolves the episode.

Personally i think the reason why people started running in fear and disgust of Ruby had something to do with where she is from or what she even is if she is human. Maestro even said "that THING is very wrong" while pointing Ruby. Her past might be fucked up which made everyone run in fear when they heard what they did. I interpreted the magic circle as an entity using rubys alternate timeline life to fix itself after the doctor broke it. A bit like the magic circle was sewing itself back up and was using rubys life as a thread. Ruby lived her life in an alternate timeline, then it flashed before her through the entity (which personified itself as an old ruby as thats when the connected) were they end up at the beginning of the episode before the doctor stepped on the circle so it can stop him from doing so. And from our perspective we see this as a mysterious old woman following ruby, but its just her watching her life back through the magic circle entity until they are back right before her timeline split off. The magic circle has used rubys alternate life as a vehicle get back to the start(by using her life to make a full circle).I think thats why it stopped snowing as they went further from the split and when ruby read mad jack it was just a reference to a chapter of rubys alternate life. Basically the minute of the episode after rubys death is whole episode, we just saw it the long way round.

It's all very timey wimey and paradoxical, which makes it confusing, especially when the main character has no idea what's going on until the last couple of minutes so much of the episode feels all over the place as there will be no way to put in explanation and you're trying to theorise on very little but that's what makes the last 5 minutes very satisfying to me as I think everything does come together, even if it's not been spoon fed by the explanation being stated out loud, it's just subtly shown and hinted at

I think the whole thing was a metaphor for death: Ruby is always 73 yards away from her future self and 73 years from death. Therefore, the apparition of herself which follows her for her life is the spectre of death and mortality. A metaphor within a metaphor = the omen of her own death is used cleverly by Ruby to ward off another omen of death - i.e. global death, as Gwilliam is the spectre of death to come also as the doctor says he will come close to pressing the button and launching nucleur missiles.Also, they all run away from Ruby's future self as this is a metaphor for people not wanting to confront mortality and death and for them wanting to shun it

An elderly Ruby travels back through time to haunt herself until her younger self realizes the solution to put time right.....to stop Mad Jack, the Prime Minister, from starting a nuclear war. The first 40 minutes was one of my favourite doctor who episodes of all time. The last 5 minutes made it probably my least favourite of the RTD2 era. I LOVED the episode, but it had like 10 layers of mystery, and not a single one was explained. Also, the episode kinda did nothing? Don't get me wrong, the episode doesn't need to have lasting effects to be good, but Ruby remembers none of it, and the evil priminister will still happen she didn't solve anything. If this episode doesn't become an important plot point later on I would genuinely say this is the biggest missed opportunity in doctor who history that he made one of the best episodes ever and then didn't explain anything at the end.

I tried looking up the lore behind fairy circles in Welsh mythology and couldn't really find anything in relation to this episode. The only thing I can think of, is how fairies could be responsible for kidnapping people. Kind of a precursor for alleged alien abductions, in which the victim would appear sometime later, with no memory of what happened to them. Lost time basically. Also, that people who broke fairy circles would be cursed. To say the least, I'm pretty sure Davies' took inspiration from this myth. But even if I'm right, I still don't know what the plot was.

So going to be honest, I haven't watched your video, but I definitely understand the sentiment, and I have an idea that I just need to write down somewhere. I also don't think this is actually how this episode was intended to work because I don't think RTD ever thought or cared about it but here goes: My theory is that The Fey are another entity, much like The Goblins. But instead of feeding off of coincidence and chance, The Fey feed off potential emotions. But unlike the Bug, these are more careful in their prey, they don't allow outside meddling so their prey can't die, and any time their prey tries to change their state, they are sent into a fear that pushes them away from that prey. That way they are always forced to die, and get sent to change their direction again, and close the loop for the feed to finish. The whole Mad Jack thing was likely a red herring, the loop didn't finish when he resigned, nor did anything really change even though an entire nuclear war didn't happen as far as we know. So it likely wasn't critical and was just misread by Ruby to be the way to solve it. I wish we had an explanation of fairy circles and what they actually do from The Doctor, but I guess they didn't have time, or more likely knowing this series, didn't actually have an explanation so they just hoped everyone else would find a way to fill it in. Zooming out though it was quite a fun episode, been really waiting for one where Millie gets a bit to shine, especially since Moffat fridges her the second he could.

My Theory now is that Ruby is a Timelord disguised as a human by a Chameleon Arch. Her memories were wiped and was given a human lifespan as we saw her live her life in the Failed timeline. Yet she can still perceive timelines concurrent to her. She first says she been to wales twice then by the end of the episode she’s been there 3 times and somehow doesn’t remember living out the “True” experience of being in wales which is the “73 yard Woman”. Besides being rubys future self, I believe it’s really her version of the Watcher like the doctor has. The doctor was able to interact and communicate with it before he regenerated into the 5th. And ruby being a Timelord turned into a human could only receive a short ranged communication in a couple of words which was “Don’t Step”. 3 failed timelines of experience was only enough for ruby to say to the Doctor “Don’t step” on the circle. At least this is my theory.
