Your videos have been helping me tremendously over the past few weeks. I have a DIY background in coding and have a minor in CS from my undergrad university. I have a final round interview next week and I've been doing is leetcode grinding and watching your videos. I think the course is a great idea. Have you considered doing live sessions as part of the class? I think another thing that you could do to help generate revenue is to offer sessions (1-2hrs) on Fiverr to give a more one on one approach.
@BackToBackSWE
@BackToBackSWE 5 лет назад
Nice!! Keep going! Yeah, I've pondered and I'd 100% do it (like a weekly call), but right now I'm super busy building up each section to get the course to stability. Once things are stable I'll become much more 1on1 with weekly class lessons. Also, I 100% don't believe in 1on1 coaching. People learn best in programming when they are guided & take the final step themselves. I'm not 100% about just generating revenue, I actually want people to derive higher-paying and more satisfying job offers from the project...I just want it to be a sustainable business because teaching tires me out & having it be sustaining motivates me to continue.

There is nothing unique material wise that your videos contain, but, there is something about the way you teach that after watching your videos "I get it". By I get it, I mean not the solution but the logic/method behind it. Your method of teaching where in you build up from brute force, improving a step at a time and finally arriving at solution is what sets you apart from the rest. You just don't give solution, you teach how to arrive at it. This last part on how to arrive at solution is what is great about you. Keep up the good work!

It's definitely fair that you want to monetize your content. I personally would have preferred a donation sceme. But that might just be the European in me. I personally struggled with this a lot as well. My channel is way smaller yet I would also receive requests like you to teach in smaller groups. Therefore I appreciate your effort to release public videos as well...

I'd do it if I had the time, but this actually makes more sense. It scales better to just put content on the internet versus teaching a closed class just at UMD alone. @@music82936 When are you starting the course? It is already going. How many videos you have added till now? 6 I think plus about 20 of the best videos from the channel to complete as well. What's the progress? So the way it works is that we have a Facebook group where we all communicate and I make 2-4 videos a week then field questions there. In 4 months there should be about 60+ videos published putting the course at 80+ videos. (along with the FB group all the way to support you). It is basically this channel except I post highly frequent, make videos with more detail and effort, and answer questions in the group as well. In the next 4 months I'd say I'll cover a good amount? I think anyone selling a course with less than 300+ videos hasn't covered everything you'll see in the interview so I can't say I personally will cover it all. But you'll have to tools to figure things out and become competent for sure.

Yeah, I sympathize, but I think all of our time's have value. We can't buy more of our time. I can't spend my whole days making quality videos for no return because that wouldn't make sense longterm. This was not an issue 9 months ago when I started because I never thought of it in this frame, I just made videos. But now the channel is pretty fleshed out and the course is the final longer extension. An equivalent question I'd ask is would you work at Facebook / {otherLargeTechCompany} for 25% off, 50% off? Would you work at Google and value your time at $30,000/year? Other courses/lessons charge $250+, but this course will stay at an accessible price basically forever because I want it to just be a normal class & not a crazy expensive course promising grand results. It is a simple exchange. I dedicate 20-30 hours a week to students & help them prepare for their interviews and people pay for that time investment. I think that is a fair deal. No hiding anything, no schemes, just a transparent exchange.

Eventually yes, my goal is to make it a ground up course. Right now I'm working on scoping out the full curriculum and I think the community will have a hand in that. The course currently has the best videos from this channel & they are mid-level difficulty (that's what big companies normally ask later year students & full-time). I think that in the meantime as I scale the course up the Facebook group will be a big help. I wake up daily at 6am so I'll be in the group multiple times a day starting early to help students 1-on-1 when I'm not planning or shooting a video. Really up to you, don't do it if you don't want - I'd rather you just watch free videos here and I can still reach you to answer your questions although less frequent. Good luck!

@@imtiazmohamed5756 I want to accomodate total beginners, but the questions you get asked in an upper internship / full-time interview are farther along the road in terms of complexity. It will just take time for me to create enough videos to span backwards from where I'll start (medium difficulty questions) back to the bare basics (what recursion is, how is memory stored in a comptuer, etc.). I was just saying that the videos will be covering intermediate concepts that a beginner could grasp, but it'd be nice for the class to mature more and you join at a later point when I'm spanning back to the absolute beginner concepts. It's hard to quantify difficulty because it is relative to what you know and your pre-contexts.

I understand your decision to monetize your time- but I'd like to request you to not neglect the content on RU-vid, because a lot of us cannot afford to pay that amount. I just think that had the folks at geeksforfeeks and other websites attempted to completely monetize their knowledge, there would have been a serious shortage of developers right now. You are a gifted teacher- and I'd just like to advise you not to forget your responsibility towards the community. I'm glad that you won't completely Stop uploading on RU-vid. All the best for the future!

Yeah, totally reasonable, I get that. But I'd like to counter that everything up to this point has been free (and that is totally fine), but personally...I'm not that motivated to put 6 hours into each video anymore because this isn't my passion. The only way I will keep teaching is if something externally motivates me because I don't have a passion for 45-minute interview problems that have no correlation to real engineering work. I'm still here, I will still post on the channel...I'm just stepping back after months of grinding myself down and assessing what I really want, what my true passions are, & how this channel can continue without me just burning out and quitting. Other people absolutely love these videos, they will make videos for free & that's totally fine. But for me, I like coding so much more, building frontends, writing servers & working with databases. I don't care about interviews. My previous motivation was to help people along in their journey to get jobs & I think the channel does a decent job and the course will be the final extension to the finish line for that chapter of work. But now, I want to go in a new direction if I post consistently here...still deciding. But for now, I'm doing school, rapidly building out the course, & just trying to stay healthy while I reassess. I've been blessed to even be in a position to help so many people out so grateful, I just need to decide how I want to creatively shift this project so that I really care about what I'm doing & it still inspires people and helps them somehow.

You realize that if you take the amount of time he takes to make these videos and put that into you yourself actually studying the already existing content and maybe buy a textbook and or a udemy video or two, you'd be more than prepared for whatever it is you're trying to do. I also love the hypocracy, I love how you're asking him to make FREE content so you can help yourself get MONEY for his WORK.This is the internet at 2019, whatever it is you're trying to learn is already out there. His responsibilityto the community? I just can't handle your entitlement. He has ALREADY done more for the community than you have. Bro. How about you take your free time and take his place in making free videos? Don't forget your responsibility towards the community. If you take from it, you need to put back into it.

@@BackToBackSWE Back To Back SWE Looks like you misunderstood me . I don't think you remember, but I've been a subscriber and a fan of your content for a while now. I've said it once, and I'll say it again- you have done a fantastic job so far, and I'm grateful, along with everyone who has watched your videos. Oh, and to you- @Jack Windensky - Are you okay? Looks like you are in great pain... Also, thanks for fulfilling YOUR responsibility by spewing out unnecessary garbage in response to honest feedback, and thanks for letting me know that there are things known as books, where I can find the study material needed. I was blissfully unaware of their existence until the time you decided to enlighten me. And what was it that you said- "I also love the hypocracy, I love how you're asking him to make FREE content so you can help yourself get MONEY for his WORK"-since you are into programming, one would expect you to know the basic difference between asking someone to do something, and politely requesting him to not stop uploading on RU-vid completely while continuing with the course, for the benefit of all of us. It was just a humble request with utmost politeness, which you clearly lack ."BRO". Next time you decide to defecate, try to do it the usual way, and not over comments on RU-vid.

@@edwardnewgate2198 Your "honest feedback" was literally asking for handouts. On top of that, you were not "politely asking" as you call it, you were putting pressure on him by saying it is his "responsibility towards the community." It is not someone's responsibility to give you a free gift. I don't understand how you could be so dense as to think this is a way to ask for a "polite" and "humble request." Just think of how laughably absurd this sounds: "It is your responsability to pay my rent...." That is not politely asking you to pay my rent, that is not a humble request. That is a shameful way to ask for anything. So quit talking about my tone and check your logic and your entitlement.

@@vineethkanaparthi785 Ah, yes, I remember this. So here is the story (just got out of class, sorry for a later reply): So going back to Apr 27, 2019. That is when I released the first podcast episode for Gaurav Sen. I was very excited to start the podcast and eager to see how people would react to it. I scheduled 4 guests ahead of time and began to interview someone new every 1-2 weeks. Then mid-May is finals here at the University of Maryland. I was borderline for my Organization of Programming languages class so I had to study and put the podcast to the side. I focused on making the main channel videos & studying for school. Then mid-finals I started preparing for my Twitter internship (learning React, getting better at JS, etc.). It was about then that I believe I interviewed Rachit. We had a great interview. Rachit was insightful and when I flew to Twitter by that point I had left the podcast alone and began focusing on programming most of my day. The podcast was 90% done with the introduction and conclusion remaining and a final scan through remaining as well to stitch relevant parts more cohesively together. Then I started working at Twitter. I began getting home at 7pm because I'd stay after to continue to study code and learn on my own time. When I got home I'd be exhausted and read books for leisure. Then I started working on www.thebigoguide.com. At that point I began staying at the office until 2am. I'd come into work drained (at 100% fault of my own) because I had a passion to build things. By this time I had forgotten about the podcast and didn't post on the RU-vid channel. Fast forward to 1 week ago. I returned to home here and have been preparing for school. My first day of school was today and still parsing all of the work on the plate as well as what I need to deliver for students for the class that I have just started. On a headachingly busy day I get a Google Hangouts message from Rachit saying, "Will you be working on the one we recorded or not?". I respond: "So I will not release it but I plan to pick up the series back up down the road" because I'm drowning in juggling multiple projects and school. He responds: "K" Then: "Please don't bother me next time" Where did you get the 4 hour figure from? The interview was about 1 hour. In fact, the following day I pulled an all-nighter near the week of finals to make an attempt at editing the podcast. That took 4-6 hours. So I've gone on too long, but ultimately this is just a big situation of life circumstance and miscommunication (largely due to a fault of my own). I'm a busy guy, but I'm definitely not a disingenuous man. I felt it was nothing major because these are both personal projects of ours, not mission-critical company projects. Discrediting another's integrity over a podcast is just silly and I apologized to Rachit for my being busy. I'm not sure what narrative you have consumed, but I have no vendetta against Rachit...I'm just another guy living. I do not want to turn over the podcast because it is not 100% ready to be published on RU-vid and I don't want it to be used. I'm not sure what more I can say. I'm sorry to whoever was offended, but this is not hurting anyone and it is just a podcast. We both donated out time (I invested far more of my time than he) and I don't think the content is good enough to be published nor do I want to continue to work on it. I will not have my arm bended for a project that is mine.
