14:31 What EDC Knife Can Beat The Benchmade Bugout?
21:17 What Makes A Truly Great EDC Knife?
Today we are sitting down with one of the most, or maybe even the most, practical EDC guys I know; my good buddy Jamie! Me and Jamie have been working together in the EDC knife and tool world for over 5 years now and he is the other half of this channel! He has been carrying the same EDC knife in his pocket for 4 years straight in the shape of a few different Benchmade Bugouts. He does not carry any pocket jewelry and until recently refused to carry any multi-tools. Like I said he is a very practical boarder line minimalist person. Recently though Jamie has had some everyday carry evolution so we sat down to sift through the nitty gritty on why we carry the things we do and how those things can evolve, be added to, and subtracted from.

Edc for me started as pure utility. I have these basic needs to cut things, see when it's dark, fix something, write things down etc... And it's so satisfying to be equipped with most everything I'm gonna need that day. Then it evolved into more of pocket jewelry (serving the same basic functions) but its a lot more fun and expensive! Gear is one of my favorite "hobbies" now... Love the content Zac and Jamie please keep it going!

Let’s not kid ourselves. Most people into EDC carrying do it either cuz they think it looks cool or it makes them feel a certain way. I bet the vast majority of people seldom use their knife. How often do you really need a powerful flashlight at night? We all have phone flashlights that can get that job done. How often are you somewhere that you need a titanium pen where a plastic one isn’t readily available? Lol how often do you really need that 30 tool multi tool in a random situation where you don’t have access to your tool box.
@agentdoubleo7636

@@krispybowgod9656 Thank you. This is what my point was in a another comment. It has created an echo chamber of EDC fuckery. HOWEVER! I AM ALL FOR PREPAREDNESS! I carry a knife, g43x MOS, and my keys and phone. I don't carry a flashlight. I could see flashlight/multitool useful in my old jobs along time ago, construction, manufacturing, so I can imagine for some professions they can be used regularly/seldomly. It's just funny how all these guys take it like they're fucking rambo. I mean, do you baby! do you! I saw this hilarious video, let me post it here and you'll see why i find it so funny.

I've been carrying a CRKT M16-Z13LEK for roughly 10 years. Give or take a couple years, I don't remember. I grew up loving knives, and this was the first knife that I felt like I could trust 100% without a doubt in any scenario. I used the glass breaker and seatbelt cutter while responding to a flipped SUV. I used the seatbelt cutter to safely cut wristbands off patients/residents regularly. It was easy to open and close one handed. I love that knife. They just recently brought it back after it was discontinued and I bought a couple more just to have in case they ever dc them again. More recently I switched careers to an office job and I keep it in my lunch bag or car (and its bigger brother in a bug out bag in case I ever have to evac. (Fires in cali are crazy every year.) Now I've got a supertinker at my desk, and a tinker small in my pocket. If I know I'm going to be working on some heavy duty construction or outdoorsy types of work I'll carry a Leatherman P4.

My EDC is a super basic Victorinox Spartan, I'm a professional machinist, I work beside a tool box and I always have tools in my pocket, I find most multi-tools have too many unnecessary add-ons, but at the same time I like having a mini pry bar ( some may call it a screwdriver)

Jamie's carry is the same as mine! I always have my Free P2 in my pocket, and while I usually rotate knives in my collection in my carry, my Bugout is usually my go to knife! I love the Bugout because it is VERY lightweight, has a "finger-safe" lock, and has a versatile blade steel! The reasons why I wouldn't carry the Banter over the Bugout is because it doesn't have a finger-safe lock and it isn't as lightweight. I definitely have a lot of respect for the Banter, though! The Free P2 has been a favorite of mine for the last two years, ever since I upgraded from a Wingman. The one hand operation and its toolset is what cemented it as my go-to edc multitool. I gotta say, I'm really loving all your content ever since you made your return! Looking forward to the video with Kurt!

Thanks for this kind of informative entertainment! For years I carried a Spyderco PM2 on and off duty, but over time the Para 3 found it's way to my pocket more regularly. Initially I choose the PM2 because it's easier to handle with (tactical) gloves but in reality I used it more often than not without gloves and I prefer the ergonomics of the Para 3, since it's introduction and adding a Lynch clip to it, over the PM2. Since then the Para 3 became my most carried knife and still love it, although I also really love my CRK Umnumzaan. From all my Para 3's in my collection, I use the Grey scaled Cruwear the most, if I recall correctly it was the first Para 3 sprint run ever, and still my favorite.

Used to carry my benchmade griptilian in 154CM and then I picked up my PM2. Honestly now I carry both of them on a regular basis for different jobs. I don’t feel bad for beating the bricks out of my griptilian because of benchmade’s warranty and if I need a REAALLLY nice cutting tool I’ll use the PM2! Wish the tip on the PM2 was a bit thicker, I’d exclusively carry it.

Man i love this channel so much! I love the realness of it all and the stories that get brought up. And i really respect both of you and your knife habits for a lot of reasons. Though i will say i align more with Jamie, i only really carry one knife though that has evolved as to what i carry. I started out with a Case trapper, was given a small CRKT m16 by a man i had an intern with, then i carried an old mercator my grandfather had, and now i carry a Spyderco Sage 5 that my brother got me for my birthday (best knife ever lol). And though a lot of people actually give me knives, i always end up gravitating to one or the other and then i stick with that. It is just rather interesting hearing what other people carry and for what reasons so on so forth. Anyway, hope yall have a good day!!

I have about 75 or so folding knives right now. I love switching out day to day or just grabbing what I might need more then something else for a specific day. Recently I got the Qvist Variant PE, first gen as it was available and the PEs had just dropped but none were around. So I got it, got titanium scales the next day and had been carrying it for several days non stop. No other knife had I done this with for a long time. Well then a fee more drops of the PE2 popped up and I ended up with 2 more PE2s and a couple sets of extra scales so now the PE2 is my current pocket pal. So still haven’t chose another knife since getting it and have a hard time just putting it down in general! Great knife with great materials, it feels like an extension of my hand. Everything is in the right place for me. I just love it. Hope to get one of Jacobs customs ones day. That’s my story lol. Great video! Looking forward to more from the channel.

Keep bringing on the great contact Zack. I always make it a point to watch your videos soon after you post them. I find the whole EDC knives/utility tool fascinating. It started out for me is just purely having a knife. I feel like in the last 7-8 years its developed into haveing a higher quality knives and tools. In some ways it's also developed into me just needing a fidget toy in my hand; the need to flick and play around with something. lol

I keep it super simple, cheap, and light. I treat it like a pen; I use it all the time, happy to lend it out, and I don't want to care if it doesn't comeback or gets damaged. For the past year or two it has mostly been a Camillus EDC3 that I got on clearance for $8. Not my favorite knife I own, but that helps it fit the bill.

I love this channel, super informative and entertaining! I've been into knives ever since my grandfather gave me my first nail nick knife! The most expensive knife I've collected thus far is the Cold Steel Espada G10 Large. My favorite EDC knife is the Kershaw Leek Blackwash, which I use to cut food mostly but I also open the occasional envelope. I have roughly 20 knives in my collection.

Great video guys! I like to rotate my EDC since I don’t really use my knives for everyday work projects or put them through hard use. I’m a huge fan of patina on knives that have survived through out the years and tell a story. I’d like to see more videos on knives that have been handed down through the family and carry on a legacy. 🇺🇸👍🏻

I carried a Swiss Army knife (Compact) by Victorinox for years; also a ThruNite Ti3 flashlight. I recently changed to a ThruNite Archer Pro light (for more power, and a daily "full charge" capability) and a Benchmade Bugout (for the light weight and slim profile, as well as the good steel blade). I don't switch things around easily, but after years of carrying those items, and plenty of thought before I made the change, it seemed like the right evolution. I have "done" EDC for years before I know it was a thing: small notebook; pen; etc., etc.... Practicality and daily usage go hand-in-hand; if something doesn't get used daily, out it goes. My EDC really *is* every day. Liked this presentation, and subscribed, and I will explore more of your content. Thanks!

Awesome episode! I carried a Delica 4 for almost as decade out of a 3 blade collection (the other 2 were another Delica and a Endura), and discovered how awesome (and expensive) the rest of the pocket knife world is during the pandemic. My collection has grown since then and I rotate my carry around a good group of users and bling (maybe more bling these days 😅). Spyderco finds it way into my pockets most days.

I am probably late to the party but I used to carry a crappy knife I bought as a kid. It did the job but it wasnt very sharp and the tip was bent and so on... Recently I have come across your channel and it influenced me enough to buy a new one. Well, to be honest I bought two. I went with Bocker USB OTF for my keychain (I work in IT, it looking like a flash drive was a huge factor) and Boker Kalashnikov OTF to replace the cheap crappy blade. I an happy with both so far but the USB OTF is just something else. I love the little thing. The OTF is so convenient, you can not only open it easily but close it as well. Cutting a zip tie is just reaching into my pocket, taking the keys out, click - cut - click - done. So satisfying.

I had been carrying a 940 for 6-7 years. Three years ago I moved to CO and picked up a Para 3(black on black g10) from the spyderco factory outlet. Dispite the added bulk, I loved the purchase on the Para3 when compared to the 940 and for automotive work, held up better. I recently had to switch back to the 940 after my vehicle was broken into and my B.O.B. and work backpack was stolen. I had changed at work and stuffed my clothes into my bag and tossed it in the backseat. The next morning as I was getting ready, realized what I had done and went out to retrieve my knife just to find my car windows smashed in. Along with the bags a couple dry boxes and tool bags of gear were also taken. Lost my Morakniv in the BOB, and aside from the Para 3 in my backpack, my modified Pilar and my Squirt S4(super sad Leatherman no longer makes the S4) are also gone. In total, almost $1400 in gear stolen. I havent felt complete since it happened.

I've carried a Kershaw Select Fire for a LONG time. I've replaced my Select Fire...with another Select Fire. It's a great blade, and the 4-bit screwdriver socket on a swing-arm is why I carry it. The swing arm has a ruler on it, but it's darned near useless because of where it is, but the bottle opener exposed when you swing out the arm is very useful. I've got other EDC tools, including a NiteIze DoohicKey, which can leverage the hex bits with the built-in ratchet, and there's a big flat head that's also a prybar. I don't have a Leatherman, I have a Nextool Flagship. I like their pliers and scissors. I don't carry it in my pocket, I carry it in my bag, along with a butane lighter and a bag of Solder Seal wire splices. (I'm a ham radio operator, and I build antennas...so having that combination is useful.) I have a few more things in my pocket, notably a leather EDC pouch. In that pouch I have a 4000mAh PD power bank, the smallest I've ever seen, a little flashlight that's UV-C, for disinfecting objects and surfaces, a pill bottle with an emergency supply of my medications (the prescriptions are all in my wallet...sorry, Officer, I don't carry a dozen-plus original prescription bottles with me everywhere, I carry a single day's doses, and all my pill bottles are in a transparent plastic makeup case the size of a small suitcase. NOT carrying the main bottles, deal with it) and a completely-built Covert Companion lockpick set. (I'm a sport lockpicker.) I have a pair of magnifying reading glasses, a silver dollar, a small titanium-cased measuring tape, and a NiteIze pen/stylus combination. I used to carry a practice lock, but the darned things are HEAVY. So I have one in my bag, not in my pocket. Yes, lockpicks are legal for anyone to carry in all but one state...where you need a locksmith license. So long as you aren't caught breaking into a lock you don't own and don't have permission from the owner, there's nothing wrong with carrying them. I have a full keyring of my pentesting keys in my bag, too. The bag's where I keep a bluetooth keyboard, a set of eating utensils in a neoprene bag, a Bluetooth dongle that'll plug into a speaker out jack, and things like sunglasses and fresh masks, etc. (I hate masks, but I hate arguing with people even more, so I wear one if I need to and make my life easier.) I've got some very nice knives. A Kershaw Leek, with the titanium dioxide rainbow coating, a CRKT 5160 Hole In One, the Van Hoy Snap-lock, a Gerber Covert Mini, and one of the "Original Belt and Boot Knives", a wonderful leaf-shaped fixed blade with good Solingen steel. For batoning wood, I have a Footprint Hacking knife, a blade used by glaziers to cut wood trim by banging on the spine with a hammer, so I know beating on the spine with a chunk of softer wood isn't going to hurt it. It's made to be pounded through wood cross-grain, so splitting it along the grain isn't going to hurt it, either. And it's also a very functional knife for just about any other purpose -- it'll also help me make dinner. Nice selection of blades, good to hear about why you do and do not change in what you carry.

I carry a SOG Baton Q1, it is a super awesome tool that helps me do my job, whether it be writing the names on papers for kiddos with the pen or opening difficult juice boxes with the scissors it helps me so much, even the screwdriver is perfect to pull staples out of the cork board and scrape tape and glue off of the tables.

I used to swap knives almost daily, focusing mostly on budget blades, and I'd buy new knives often enough that I never had to sharpen anything! But once I started focusing on specific aspects of knives, both from deployment (thumbhole, thumbstud, front-flipper) and lock type (button, compression, axis a little bit), my collecting slowed a bit. For a long time, my top carry knives were a well broken-in PM2, a 14C28N Real Steel Griffin, and a Real Steel Gen 2 Metamorph, and a flipper-deleted Gen 1 Kizer Swaggsback. When I got my AD20.5 in-hand, it felt like I had hit "Peak Knife": thumbhole plus thumbstud PLUS an ambi fidgety AF lock mechanism. But then over the long weekend, the Swaggsback made it back in my pocket (N690 > 3V for beach carry), and I remembered the other important factor in a knife: how well it cuts. Sure, the chonk of a blade on the AD20.5 is capable, but that thin little wharnie on the Swaggsback is just ::chef's kiss:: for most of my EDC cutting tasks. I would LOVE for Kizer to do a Swaggsback XL: push out the blade to 3.5", mix up the blade steel (154CM anyone?), lose the flipper tab, and bring back the thumbstuds. That is about the only knife that I think would have a chance of dethroning the AD20.5, for me at least.

Upon seeing the Baby Banter I knew it was destined for my pocket. It has since "dethroned" the Leek. It's carried in tandem with a Compact sporting Taschenmesser black Micarta plus scales. Very much looking forward to a Micarta Baby Banter after watching your last video. I hope they come to fruition!

I got a cub scout pocket knife at 8 yrs, and in those days, you could pocket carry that to grade school, which I did EDC. I then turned 12 and EDC'd the Boy Scout pocket knife all through High School. Lost it after graduating, got an alox Swiss Army knife. Still have that knife, but it only goes to church with me now. I got the original leatherman PST, which eventually failed and Leatherman sent me a new one. Still have that one, but i retired it for the new Leatherman Bond. I feel naked without it. Now, almost 68 years old, I have been EDC-ing for 60 years.

I carried a Buck Rush for ~15 years as my edc work knife. That blade has been so used and abused. It was fantastic, but after my scales started falling off I decided to go on the hunt for the next edc knife. The blade is pretty worn too. Now I carry the Spyderco Para 3 (S110V) as my edc cutter, Fox Knives DART Tanto (N690Co) as a self defense blade, and a Spyderco PM2 (S30V) as a back up defensive blade. I almost never find myself in a situation where I think that I need a multi-tool, but I do carry a Leatherman MUT in my personal car and a Victorinox Swiss-Tool MXBS in my go bag at work. I used my Victorinox for the first time to make my tire serviceable enough to get my vehicle off the roadway to get a tire change. The Para 3 and Fox DART goes with me to work as well.

Very interesting discussion. I've been struggling with the whole want vs. need aspect of EDC and while I have a bunch of knives, mostly traditional, the 2 that I constantly come back to are the Mini Osborne and a Victorinox Yeoman. While they're definitely not as cool or as unique as some other older or newer knives, they just work for me. And one of the reasons they work is a hard truth that Jamie touched on, which is I'm just a guy that works at a desk who needs to cut open a bag or cut down a box. Price aside, I always question myself as to why I'm on the hunt for another knife or even why I should keep my collection of knives.

Excellent and fun video! I'm now subscribed. I have carried the same two pocket knives for the past 38yrs,...yes you read that right 38 years. Back in my late teens while going to University I used to spend my Summers building Western Harvestore Silos to put myself through school. in 1985 just out of High School about to begin my first year in University at 18 yrs old I bought 2 APEX Imperial Knives, a double blade Barlow, and a medium sized Stockman. They have black fiberglass or fiber resin scales held on by pins and not removable. I rarely have left my home without one of those knives in my pocket for as I have said 38 yrs. The Stockman's main blade is now much skinnier than it was originally after almost 40 yrs of touchups, the Barlow which had a thicker main blade, a clip point has faired better and still looks and works well, although I have managed to wear out some of the spring that used to give it a snappy walk and talk, it now has more of a groan. I have been looking at a couple of replacements but with so many options I'm just having a problem deciding on one. I like the Spyderco Stretch 2 in ZDP-189, I like this because my Uncle who was a commercial airline Pilot after his military service bought a Rockstead in Japan with the same steel, but where as he paid over $2500 for his knife I can buy the Stretch 2 For a little over $200 CDN. The second I like for the blade shape and that's the Benchmade Mini Griptillian with the thumb hole in CPM S30V steel. Or, I could just pick up a Boker Barlow in N690 or a Rough Rider Reserve Barlow Razor in D2. I really wouldn't mind any of these knives in my pocket, and now lately, there is the budget Liong Mah Eutektik Line, The Demko Shark CPM 3V series and on and on. I would appreciate your thoughts and insights and,....Help! Cheers from Canada - Dave

Started with the Blue Bugout, then the Orange Mini came out so of course, I had to have that and rocked that, then the Premium Bugout.......DROOL....So yep.....ordered that and the Mini Freek with CF and S90v like the Bugout. Found the Mini Freek to be a little wide bodied having been so tuned in to the slim Bugout. I should add.....Full disclosure here Zac! Ugh...this one hurts to admit lol. I was looking at both thinking, ok, which one do I get. So, I made the decision to get the Mini Freek, so I promptly and unintentionally ordered the Bugout in CF and S90V!! Then the next day I got the shipping notice and to my surprise....it wasn't the Mini Freek that I had ordered! ARGH!!!! So you guessed it.....Decided, oh well, I know I'll love the Bugout so I went BACK and also ordered the Mini Freek. So glad I did! It was the pocket dominate knife for a week. I kid you not..I couldn't get past the width, so the CF with S90V Bugout went into the pocket and the Mini Freek became the Designated Desk Knife. But then I got to searching for CF scales for my Mini Bugout and found Rogue Bladeworks was making a LEFTY ONLY set! YESSSSS!!!!! Because I enjoyed both the Bugout and Mini Bugout I wanted that same premium look. Not a WEEK after I ordered the scales what dropped all over the place? Yeah, the CF & S90V MINI Bugout! HA!!!! But I didn't cave....Stuck with the S30V and my CF Rogue scales UNTIL.......lol....Remember, I'm a Lefty.....I'd had hopes and dreams of getting a Demko with the Shark Lock for ages (it seemed) and what do my wandering eyes see? An Orange Scaled AUS10A in drop point and Sharks Foot options. BAM....Couldn't click buy it fast enough. It's Thin, as Ambidextrous as our beloved Benchmade Axis Locks and in my favorite blade edge shape. Not a Wharnie, Not a Sheeps Foot, but a combination like my CRK Small Sebenza with the Insingo blade style. So......for the past 3 weeks the only thing that's been in my pocket is my new to me Demko AD20.5 in orange Grivory with the Sharks Foot blade. I've already accessorized it with the Casey Lynch Deep Carry LH carry clip and may in the future look at upgrading the scales. But for now, with the skeletonized steel liners, it's perfectly fine even though it's got considerably more weight to it than the Bugouts. We'll see how long the Bugout stays out of my pocket lol. Cheers! Zip~
