My 'collection' and collecting habits have gotten out of control. What was meant as ebay reselling stock has infiltrated my house and mind. I'm taking back Control #ebay #ebayseller #ebayreseller
Sometimes your gambling in charity shops or bootsales for the thrill of not knowing what you might find, the treasure hunt eventually turns into an addiction 😢
Love watching your videos but if you know you've a problem and you're trying to address it why on earth are you back in the charity shop buying more crap! Nothings changed you have a disease you need to list the stuff you have at home. Try this ..... don't buy anything until the car boots next year, have 6 months off from buying. How does your wife put up with this cause if it was mine she'd be long gone. You're on a sticky wicket pal but good luck!
Can't just click your fingers and the problem dissappears. It's going to take time for me to work out what to keep and let go of... I need time to change that mindst. while I do that I still need stuff to sell on ebay. We're listing 4 times the amount I source per week so finding a few items in the shops Wednesday still means the bulk of what we list is stock I already have. I have a bigger picture plan here that I'm not ready to share but it coming:)
I'm a batman comic collectors last few years bought loads ,getting ridiuclas ,so I watched your video other day,and thought. Right enough enough ,there going to just get bagged and boarded ,put them away ,end of,plus save me 100 quid a month easy ,thanks fir your help ...
I think there's also a sub conscious fear or running out of stock - to have a decent backlog - 'JUST IN CASE' which feeds the need to continually buy rather than address what you've already got, I also get FOMO on finding quality items - both are signs of feeding an addiction and the thrill of the hunt.
Good luck, Ian. The struggle is real! You've always refered to "the" collection which is kinda vague! Sometimes what we call things affects how we think about them. I just have a few specific things that I collect, and try not to keep anything else!
i dunno... i think that a lot of the sourcing locations put you in the position to be exposed to nostagic items or collectaibles... and at cheap prices too
Your bit about it being a long term solution is you just kidding yourself mate, honestly. It's like an alcoholic thinking I'll just cut back the beers over time and that will work. You need to stop buying and concentrate on listing, you're sitting on thousands of pounds, all the best with it, don't mean to sound harsh.
Nah I've lost the thrill of collecting. Been like it for a while tbh where I've just been collecting anything for the sake of collecting. They'll no doubt be a couple of bits I'll want to keep but I need to take the time to really work out what that is
@OldManRocketLeague Totally agree with this statement, What cracked me up he done a 3 min intro talking about how he has a problem with his stock and its effecting his family and says he's taking bits to recycling, binning stuff and donating... " I am the master of pieces and its time for a clear out".... 10 seconds later he's back in the charity shop buying more stuff hahahaha I really like your videos bro i hope you get out this vicious cycle.... Good Luck bro
@@scousedann1642 Ian, if you read this, Scouse and I are both coming from good places, we're not trying to give you a hard time, but if you're sitting on stock worth loads and you're still buying medium quality items to make a £10 on - it's not going to solve your issues. Don't buy anything for a month and concentrate on what you have. I'd say you also have a FOMO issue as well mate.
I know where you're coming from and the logical side of me totally agrees!! What I tried to communicate though is I have an illogical connection to these items and that's a connection I need to break before i can sell them (I'm working out how to do that). Its wierd... i cant just click my finger and it beocmes 'stock'. In the meantime while I get to the bottom of that, I can quite easily pop round a few shops and buy some bits and get them straight on ebay... no emotional connection at all. Its an avoidance tactic but I need time to tackle the 'collection' and make it a long term mindset.
Dude, you cannot be buying stock like that when you have a house full of stock to clear out you need to clear the stock out before you stop picking anything else up. It is the buying that is the problem!
I think this is the same for most resellers myself included. Buying the stock (sourcing) is the fun part of this! So you find yourself going sourcing when you have stuff to list. Having a death pile is ok. But your death pile is Wayyy to big haha
Well done Ian loved the other video too, Bradford Bulls top is Adam Henry I believe, def worth a pick up don't find many with official super league prints on these days.
Another excellent, thought-provoking video. I think you have to be mindful to not be too ruthless with your clear out. You don't want to be buying back collections in the future because of this phase you're going through - one all collectors go through. Keep what you really like, sell the rest. That's what I'm doing. I even let eBay decide on some things I'm 50/50 about. List it high and it it sells, it sells.
having that sellers regret is something that I'm fearful of. To be honest though I'll be selling everything at market price so unless the prices drastically rise I'll be able to buy it back if I miss it to much (or so I keep needing to remind myself)
I sold a Porsche yesterday A vehicle i bought 6 months ago The night before I was really upset with myself tgat it was going as I loved it and v hard to find one as good as I know all if it’s story BUT …. As it drove off I laughed to myself £100 for 300 miles…… £2000 profit I looked at my little EV that costs 1.2p a mile and that’s it closed right there.
I'm the opposite. A minimalist reseller. The clutter stresses me out when it drifts into other parts of the house. Hate the untidy nature of my (too small) stock room with stock and cardboard boxes on the floor
Large scale ‘collecting / hoarding’ can often have it’s basis in grief. I think you need to think what that era means to you and why you mentally might want to keep a ‘foothold’ back in that time. In a practical sense, I recommend keeping your profits from selling your items separate from your other family finances. See that ‘pot’ building up and then spend it on experiences for the whole family that you would not otherwise be able to do, and then you are creating new memories, without the guilt and baggage. Good luck with it all!
Love the content,a had the same issue a few years was collecting more than selling at one point,a changed my approach and decided on focusing on a ps1 collection, long story short started selling all my other stuff and getting more obscure ps1 stuff was basically selling 15-20 items to buy one game after about 6 months had cleared most of my collection of odds and sods and ended up with a cool ps1 collection that fits in a large box helped me alot
I'm an ebay reseller and vinyl record collector. I have reached a "one in - one out" policy now so it does not grow any bigger. I think that you would enjoy having a smaller , but more interesting collection.
I personally think it's because it's not your main job, if it was you'd find it much easier to be more ruthless and see it as merely stock instead of a collection. Great videos though 👍
Find the most attached item you have that you know you need to sell and get your wife to sell it for you. Eventually you’ll be able to sell them yourself no problem
Watching your video this morning it hit home im new to reselling and i started to do the same i bought 2 little mermaid teddies the fish and the crab to sell then im like these are cute im going to keep them now if i start doing that i wont stop. So im taking your advice im going to put them on to sell not keep them i dont need them. Thank you for been true and open 😊
I used to have a huge collection of 80s and 90s figures and odds and ends but had to sell it all to fund my move to Norfolk. Live in a tiny flat now so can’t accumulate too much stuff. Great video.
My problem is I buy stuff and then think I'll keep it for a bit it will be worth more money later, but now I am filling up the house with too much stuff, so I will have to start sorting it out and get it listed on ebay. I have donated some stuff.
this is an interesting point as well Julie. I've got a few things like that and I'm not sure the best time to sell. There's always the chance things might go up.. but then I guess the chance they might go down too.
I have thought of opening a 90's nostalgia museum. Only as a joke to my family. I don't have the collection for it. Some things are so expensive nowadays, unless you're finding gems cheaply which is getting harder and hard I couldn't afford a big collection. I think you (me too) tend to keep the best finds because of the buzz you get finding them. The attachment is probably grows from that feeling more than anything else.
there are definitely things I've kept because they were just a good deal... but then again I've sold stuff that ive got for a good deal. not sure why certain things i tend to keep and others not.
@@MasterofPieces I just watched the first video and I wish I could take back my first comment because it's kind of irrelevant really. You absolutely can make positive, lasting change despite what some have said. Letting go of things may seem daunting to start with, but in the end it will feel like a burden has been lifted and you'll probably learn what actually brings you some joy. But please don't stop sourcing because I learn so much from you!
I get what you are saying, my family despair with me, you inspire me to have a good clear out. We had a perfectly nice pub in the garden, which turned into my workshop, a spare bedroom is my stock room, the dining room table is my photo area, the kitchen is where I pack everything. The home is in turmoil. It is supposed to be a safe relaxing place where you can de-stress at the end of the day. How can you relax when everywhere you look is a reminder of the work you need to do. There is clutter everywhere, my mind is therefore cluttered. Good shout mate, I'm going to take a leaf out of your book.
this is exactly it and something I want to aspire too as well. The garage is my ebay/youtube space and I want to get back to that!! good luck with the clear out!!
I’ve recently moved into a office space, the house is finally today & honestly the best thing I’ve done. I found myself a nice little unit for a great price. Would recommend
I had a similar issue with hoarding, my way of reducing was picking one thing to concentrate on which was vintage starwars and I sold everything else I had. Its hard but once you realise knowone else's cares about what you own and that your hoard doesn't impress anyone it makes it a lot easier. For me I love vintage starwars and the collection is just for me to enjoy. If I was you maybe just keep your amazing transformers collection and take it from there. Take care
i don't have enough time to do 10 items a day.... so the backlog will last longer... meaning really I don't need to top it up..... but then youre taking the fun out of reselling if youre not sourcing ha.
@@MasterofPieces but Ian you take off Wednesday usually to Source (you don’t need to source) right now. Bootsales / jumble trials are over for the summer. Instead of spending 3/5 hours heading up the valleys (Gambling) that you’ll score at some Charity shops. Instead tackle that pile. I took work off Tuesday & between 9/2pm I listed 100 items, so there really is enough time in the day for you
Great video again Ian With all your items you are finding hard too let go why don’t you when selling them total the price they sell for and use it as a goal too put towards something like your attic conversion or a holiday only a thought . You could have the total in top corner bit like your good friend the Welsh pokerpicker . Once you start seeing how much you are making might set you on a roll Love the channel you articulate everything so well no swearing and just seem like a genuine guy . Been watching for years but never subscribe but will do today .
Terry Lee Miall of Adam and the Ants once said to me why do you collect all this stuff? when I had massive collection of Adam Ant stuff. He said it means shit when you’re dead! He was right I sold most of it
@@MasterofPieces my collection was ridiculous, I’d have singles like Stand & Deliver from all over world! Japanese, Spanish etc! Boxes of memorable. Kept all the UK stuff and oddities!
what you own ends up owning you relates to the bank balance, if you end up buying over and above then you can end up in debt and then you are working for the bank, i think nowadays that mostly relates to your house the biggest purchase in your life will be your house, it will cost you £200k and you end up working for 40 years to pay it off, if you are unhappy in your job then it can literally end up that you are just working for the bank manager every month. i wouldnt worry about a small £15K collection if you are having no problems your mortgage, there is a large amount of propaganda around today bcos they want you to buy lots of cheap stuff from china and keep the economy going - also with inflation, anything that you buy that is old is worth more money, bcos modern toys are smaller and worth more money bcos the materials cost more, also collecting has never been more important now than ever bcos with the culture wars people are actively trying to erase the past and if you sell it now, there is a genuine reality that you may never see it again, anyway thats my twopence worth, my problem has never been parting with things it has always been that i buy too much in the first place, so we are coming at the problem from different angles but certainly dont give up the collecting, just enjoy it more, whether you are collecting for your own enjoyment or for future posterity and future generations to enjoy and get enjoyment from
Glad you're on your first step in dealing with the addictive side of being a reseller. I'm relieved to hear recognition of the impact of your reselling business on your family. I do hope the loft conversion isn't going ahead for your reselling career.
All the bits you are taking out of your "collection" and selling you should put the money in a separate account and do something positive with it with your family
Most of the solution to a problem is recognising that it is a problem. I reckon you can get on top of this matey. But you have got your work cut out for you if you keep adding to the pile.
I'm the same with cd ..I've have a collection of 3,000 odd .. Mainly stuff I've missed when I couldn't afford it Love ur channel Ian ...don't ever worry of you want to keep it ..there are loads of us like this
Glad your boys had some fun with the Lego and that your doing well on that stuff mate. Best of luck with the clearout. FYI I remember the Hot Wheels races 😊
I think its time to get JonLuc in, take the money, close your eyes and it'll all be gone!! Spend that money on a nice break with the family. The fact your not all about 'business' is my fav thing about your content, but time to be ruthless 😁
@@MasterofPiecesIt definitely comes across, especially your target and annual 'annual performance' reviews 😁 but you stick to things that excite or interest you, not just chase the £££ ❤️
Im glad youre getting a grip on the situation. Its just stuff at the end of the day. I liked the Mopcar championships btw, i thought you might have made it an annual thing.😅
I think its a common problem for resellers who focus on niches that they aren't personally passionate about. Its fundamentally where their deeper knowledge lies. just need to be more ruthless
I think the problem is the items he has in the attic and admits he never looks at again. Those in my opinion need to go. Also if its taking over your house and negatively affected your families lives it has too change also. That last point is from personal experience 😅😅
No direspect but there are children suffering in wars and with awful health issues, take a deep breath and put your issues into perspective and just think about that when your missing the toys.
i see where you're going with perspective... but its this type of attitude why people bottle up their feelings.. they don't think they are significant enough to warrant addressing/talking about
@@MasterofPieces Life is to short to stress yourself out and make yourself unwell, focus on the positives of what your doing and how well the chanel is doing and the lovely family you have.
