My father left my mother for another woman when I was 8 years old. As a kid, I used to come home from school and watch MTV while I waited for her to come home from work. This song was a staple of the channel’s rotation back then. I bore witness to what he did to her emotionally, and listening to this always struck a nerve with me that I couldn’t fully grasp at the time. Thirty years later, I understand why. This is a masterpiece of songwriting for anyone who has ever felt the blunt force of betrayal, which is all of us. This is my mother’s song, and all of ours.
I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS SONG FOR 20 YEARS AND I FINALLY FOUND IT!! My mom played this song when I was a child and for the longest time I convinced myself this song didn't exist, all i could remember was how the rhythm for "i'm the only one" in the chorus went... I didn't even remember the lyrics, just her singing "one" really long and the beginning of the chorus. I heard this song on the radio today on a station that constantly cuts out, but I heard enough to find this!
I'm a guy and I'm not ashamed at all to say I dig Etheridge and her powerful voice and music. this is coming from someone who also likes death metal and other extreme music. it just goes to show there are many different styles that speak to me in a musical sense.
Me Too who else is listening 2 this in December 2018?? I like all kinds of music anything from death metal to metal to things like the used I love even hip hop I definitely like hip hop and I never thought I would LOL stained I mean you name it I could probably tell you songs by any bad that I really like I even like Queen LOL so you can like a genre of music you don't have to just stick to one
Im crying thru the whole song! It just hit deep ...still \m/ effen Rock'n Out all the perfect words indeed..Im long gone, but the words hit to the core!
Melissa Etheridge is awesome on this song , great guitar riffs , great bass & great drums and great vocals , still loving it in 2019 & beyond !!! 👍👍👍 Anyone else ???
Screaming her passion to her love with electric fire in perfectly rendered pentatonic scale. Are people fucking DEAD?This shit is electric blues at its finest. Shits timeless. Guys, girls be screaming this song with tears running down their cheeks for quite a while playing this. I'm a guy I scream this shit at whatever cheating bitch I'm thinking about. If this can't light you up? Check out pour some water on me too.
Yes it is timeless, but it does not mean victory. The song never claimed to get her lover back. She probably had to move on to someone who might feel the same way about her.
I've actually been wanting to make a metal/hard rock cover of this with my band. It's definitely raw and emotional and I've always had nothing but pure respect for this song.
For those wondering, the musicians are lead vocalist-acoustic and electric guitarist Melissa Etheridge, electric guitarist Waddy Wachtel, bassist Pino Palladino, drummer-percussionist Mauricio Lewak, and keyboardist Scott Thurston.
My mom loved this song. I remeber saturday cleaning while this cd blares and all the doors and windows open singing with the broom like life would be great.
I can only say one thing. Thank you. Today, I decided to listen to all of the sings my mother sang the day before she died, and this song brought tears to eyes, both from happiness and despair... Thank you. As messed up as that sounds, thank you.
My best friend died April 1st 2022, when we first met I'd go to her house to hang out with her and her family in their garage. They had a stack of CDs and I'd always go to this one, Tracy Chapman and Alanis morsette. We've had millions of late night car ride, this is one of the many songs that makes me think of her And absolutely kills me Everytime
“Rise. It’s time. This moment has been a long time coming. You know that you’ve been chosen. You know you can’t keep running. Stop spinning in circles and start believing in the magic, of who you are meant to be. Spread your wings, and don’t forget to take flight. You’ve been growing them stronger since the start of your life. You only get one chance at this; so honey, let’s get it right. You have the power inside you to soar. Don’t ever give up the fight. Dig down deep and find it inside; all of this power you’ve taught yourself how to hide. Call it to the surface. It’s right there, in your mind. Only you can fulfill your destiny and purpose. Brave girl, it is time to fly.“
Every1 is saying how old this song is. I dont think songs get old. I don't believe music has a time. Whether u like it when came out or hear it again 20 years later doesn't make the song any different. The song was good then, it still will be now. I grew up to 90s pop & I still love it. I cant find anything I like on the radio now. I listen to a mix station & hope they play sumthin good. I'd be delighted to hear this.
Was jamming to this in 1991 and dedicate it to you, REV, you left us too soon but " I remember you" and so much more. Our daughter has shown you just how much she misses and loves you as well as me. She's absolutely wonderful Roger, as she has always done for you and in your memory/name always. The success of a Vaughan. We miss you so much, DDV
Our Loved Ones Are The ONLY ONES That Really LOVE EACH OTHER They Should Be THE ONLY ONE FOR THEM. They're THE ONES That DO SO MANY ROMANTIC Things and So Many Good Things For Each Other. A Man Should ONLY BE IN LOVE With ONE WOMAN and A WOMAN Should ONLY BE IN LOVE With ONE MAN and That's It. That's How It SHOULD ALWAYS Be. MELISSA ETHRIDGE IS THE ONLY ONE That Sang This Song and Did This Song. This Is My FAVORITE Song By MELISSA ETHRIDGE. She Sang IT GOOD And WELL. She Did Great With This Song. I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE That LIKES This Song. I Know MANY People LIKE This Song. Agreed? GOOD 90S SONG.👍 🙂
As a metal head , punk rocker , old school hiphop head , id just like to say that this song is super Effin dope . And ME gets a lot of respect from me .
my mother and I had a really rough history she moved me to Arkansas from ohio got hooked on Crystal meth and left me to fend for myself at 16 I hated her for years but one day years later I heard this song and thought about how before that she was the only one who cared about me and told myself that it's time to reconnect with her she did give me life to find out she clean up and found Jesus so it was a whole new mom it was great
jjones202197 I love this so much. I know how your mother felt. Because I was also that mother. You was probably the only person who kept your mother alive and didn't even know it. I know there was so many times my daughter saved me and she doesn't even know it yet.
I have been through something similar. Its important to see that its not them. its the drugs. they take a hold of people. no mother would willingly give up on their own child and abandon them. thats how i feel anyway.
@@destinytempalski3607 uh...many mothers willingly do that all the time. My mother gave my sister and I up for adoption at 4 & 5years old and she was not battling drug addiction and had family that could have helped. She was just plain selfish and now that I know her as an adult, she still is so I limit my contact with her. She doesn't know how to be a "mom"
shout out to everyone listening to this in 2017! This electric blues is beyond golden💗😀 Lol I think all mothers loved this song. I love this song it's awesome and fits.
As a singer and guitarist, this is my go to song when I really want to tell a certain someone something I will never give them the pleasure of hearing. I scream with you Melissa!!! Thank you!!! Much love everyone! ❤
I love her voice.... One of the strongest most powerful voices.... Stevie nicks Toni Braxton Amy Celine Dion Christina Aguilera I could name a few more!
Reminds me of a previous lover who followed me from one end of the country to another, and then pussed out. He was always looking for "the next best thing." I was the only one who would treat him well.
This song and album was released at the right time for so many people. They talk about the Woman's movement in music now,and it is a. Strong Force, the Women of the 90s started it all
Lol. The radio station I'm listening to advertised Melissa Etheridge being on tour, and this is one of the songs that played! I forgot all about this song!
I love this song. I auditioned for Alamogordo Idol in NM singing this song and ended winning the competition. Thanks Melissa Ethridge, I love to sing this song whenever I have the opprotunity.......
I used to karaoke every weekend, I was blessed to have a good voice and lungs and this was one of the songs I'd sing. I miss that so much,it was a way to release pain (all kinds of pain)but I can't now, I have multiple sclerosis and I've lost my vocal cords and I had major lung surgery as well, and that messed everything up! But love this song and love her! Good Time's!
Hit the 60+ mark and couldn’t agree more. Laying it all out there while keeping the nuance, subtle and accepting. She’s truly a gem and a positive advocate! ♥️
When your nine months pregnant and have a burst of energy that won't go away crank this song and blet out the lyrics my fiance is thinking I'm crazy right now cause I have so much energy
Melissa you have always been & are still a true inspiration! You are simply amazing! Unique voice & a bad ass guitar player! You make it look so easy! Just simply amazing!
I've enjoy this just as much as I did when it 1st came out because my Mother introduced it to me by listening to it alot and the radio played it on Star 94 or Z93 and 96Rock (fm stations in ATL)
I love her music because it's the perspective a woman who has had her heart broken by women. As a guy I vibe with her songs because she gets how girls can leave your soul in two pieces but she has that female fire and passion that makes her songs hit a little harder
