@Howard Kurgan Barry is arguing a straw man. You never said that the reason for not consuming dairy was because cows have their milk extorted from them, but rather because of the animal cruelty involved. Plus, Barry is being intentionally misleading and condescending because he thinks vegans have "precious attitudes." Your post was anything but "precious." It was factual and explained the specifics of animal cruelty in the dairy industry. He also assumes that vegans are so because they think they can change the dairy industry simply by abstaining from dairy. You also alluded to no such thing. Barry does not consider, for example, that it could be a personal moral choice to not participate in cruelty. Based on his actions, Barry is a troll. He's intentionally not listening to what you are saying and hoping to spread negativity on the internet. He's not worth it.

Not bashing vegans.. but good arguments exist that cheese helped spur human brain development. Hard to argue with a super food that helped create us, or at least that is my opinion.

Two of my favorite vegan RU-vidrs - one from Toronto where I used to be and one in SD where I currently am. But purely coincidence. I’m not 100% sure from where but my sister-in-law found some good bagels in SD. I want to say the French Bakery, but that doesn’t make sense. Didn’t try them, but I doubt they’re as good as Montreal or NYC bagels

I just wanted to share something I’ve discovered when making pizza. I put on after the tomato base I add guacamole and then add the toppings and of course vegan cheese. I know it sounds really weird but if you just give it a try the guacamole gives it that Tang that I’m always searching for that vegan cheese just doesn’t have.

I really appreciate the fact that you're encouraging people to go past the idea that vegan cheeses are just a (bad) joke. And although nowadays there's vegan cheese makers who are creating incredible recipes (especially in France), I'm French and vegan, and I came to the sad realization that the offer in the vegan cheese department can't compare to the thousands of different tastes of cheese we have in France, and that's a craving I will never be able to fully satisfy ^^" (Unrelated : your channel is amazing. I have discovered it yesterday and already tried your hummus, it's to die for.)

Hey, I'm "moving" to France (Nice) next Friday for half a year. So I would love if you could tell me which supermarkets have the best vegan options for me to shop at (and maybe some of your favorite products of you got rely good ones). That would be really nice of you. I know this isn't really related to the video, but most of the people in this comment section are really nice (and also vegan), so I thought, why not ask and make it easier on myself :)

My six year old goes to *town* on some grilled and/or cold chao sandwiches and I love grating mykonos vegan mozzarella for pizza. So Delicious and Daiya have good shreds for salads or burritos/quesadillas, too!

Your recipes look great! I had been a dairy-free pescatarian for 3.5 years before I was pregnant. Although I enjoy dairy cheese once in a while I am always down to try good vegan cheese! Your cashew cheese looks similar to what I used to make with miso and homemade saurkraut juice! I will definitely try your version. Thank you for sharing your recipes😍

Dave's Killer Bread Bagels have been my favorite vegan bagels!!! Soooo good, not thin and skimpy like other vegan bagels. I'm personally addicted to the plain bagel they offer, I also put butter on it dry and then toast it. Because it's not a skimpy bagel it still has enough dough to be soft and crunchy.

Heh. "I gave up cruelty, not flavor" is probably the best retort to the whole question of "If you don't eat these things, why do you try to make substitutes of them?" I know some vegans who honestly don't like the taste of animal-based food products, but I know far more who miss the flavors but aren't willing to destroy an animal's life to get them. (I'm not vegan myself, but I do cook for someone who regularly flirts with veganism and your recipes always look fantastic.)

I'm also in San Diego. Love Donna Jean too! If you haven't been to Kindred yet, you are in for a treat! The food, drinks, and ambiance are spectacular! As far as bagels go, I like Nomad Donuts bagels, but Ben & Esther's Vegan Jewish Deli has my favorite vegan cream cheeses. Trader Joes has my favorite store bought cream cheese and feta (brine-y and salty). But hands down favorite vegan cheeses come from the farmers markets we have here: Double Batch Vegan Creamery...they sell an aged parmesan, brie, a bunch of other cheeses that are flavorful and melt really well. So tasty!!! Ok now I need to go to the farmers market this morning to re-up :D

I make cashew cheese with rejuvelac from sprouted whole wheat grains and let it ferment in room temperature for one day. Nutch, Italian seasoning and pepper flakes give it all the flavors I need. Very appetizing.

Here in the UK where I live we have amazing vegan cheeses available, they melt, they taste like dairy cheese. There is Greek Feta from Violife which is soo good, Vitalite cheese block tastes like Gouda and melts very well, Applewood smoked vegan Cheddar is really nice as well, there are so many brands making vegan camembert and brie (has never been my jam though, not even the dairy version)..... I've been Vegan since September 2014 and not craving anything animal related, I just eat a whole plantbased balanced diet. How can someone crave animal fat all the time ? I don't get that. I remember 7 years ago the options for vegan cheese were horrible.

The Tofutti cream cheese is my favorite vegan cream cheese ever!! I feel like it's an oldie but goodie - it used to be all that was available at my local supermarkets, & it was affordable, & it happened to be the BEST vegan cream cheese I've ever tried... Then when newer, more name-brand vegan cheese companies started coming out w/their own veg cream cheese, my stores stopped carrying Tofutti ☹️ and none of them compare in quality or price.

Vinegar mother ferments alcohol. You need bacteria / yeast which ferments protein, sugar or cellulose. Cabbage or sauerkraut juice is a easy source. Or use a bit of bought fermented vegan cheese.

I am so jealous of the options you have even in mainstream supermarkets! The options easy available to me here in Switzerland are mostly so unhealthy and the taste is not there that I still refrain from them. Glad that there is the cosmos of salsas and hummus (to make at home).

I am not vegan, but have been incorporating more and more vegetarian and vegan recipes in my rotation. I did go to a vegan restaurant (called Ethos) with some vegan friends when visiting them in Orlando, and their cheese on the lasagna I had, and the cheese pizza my girls devoured, was absolutely amazing. That was the best cheese I've ever tasted period. I'd love to know their secret.

That restaurant looks so good though!!! But Miyoko's pepper jack slices are the BEST for grilled cheese. Melts super nicely, doesn't taste weird or overly fake. Definitely recommend it.

Anyone in Australia needs to try the brand Sheese, their product 'mature style cheddar'. I used to be such a fool for cheddar, and this brand actually makes me enjoy cheese in the exact same way I used to, especially cheese and olives together.

Really enjoyed your video, I'm from the UK in England ever been?? 😁 We do have some of them brands in our supermarkets and some of our own brands-also we do have a number of Vegan butchers across the UK I have been to many parts of the US since a small kid in the 80's! Also do you like Theme/Water Parks, Museums, Theatre, Zoos/Safari Parks?? I am Lactose Intolerant and allergic to Whey, so have a combo of Lactose Free and Non Dairy stuff!

In the Netherlands we only have 3 different kinds of vegan cheese at the supermarket and the be honest they are digusting :-( The only one that is not digusting is the cheddar one but I can say I like it either. Hopefully we are getting more different ones cause I really want some good vegan cheese!

I appreciated your recipes because a big problem I have with store bought vegan cheeses is the complete lack of protein! Given how many higher protein options there are for at home vegan cheese, I’m surprised more of those aren’t commercial! (Can’t be bothered to make most of them at home)….well, at least your feta and fermented cream cheese are good sources of protein + microbes! Excited to try those, since they’re easy!

I wasn't even a great cheese lover, but one cheese I absolutely crave is haloumi. I live in a bit of a vegan desert area, where they consider pigs and chickens as vegetables. To make it even worse we have stopped importing lots of vegan products, including that cream cheese you tried.

I appreciate this video and have liked many other videos from this channel. Personally I'm transitioning to dairy free for health reasons. One thing that keeps coming up is the issue of "cruelty" though. I don't think there's anything cruel about milking a cow or harvesting eggs from chickens, I think a lot of vegans can develop a superiority complex thinking that they are more moral than everybody else. The culture can feel so shaming and alienating. Anyways tho I do appreciate this channel and hope to keep learning more as I transition to non dairy.

as a constant grilled cheese eater, i suggest spreading vegan mayo instead of veg butter on your bread, esp. if you store your butter in the fridge! it's easily spreadable and tbh, they are both just oil in different formats anyways. loved to see all these different aspects of vegan cheese, great video as always :))

Violife Mature Cheddar slices are pretty dope, same with Miyoko's Pepper Jack...soft cheeses liek for dipping are way more frequently delicious these days...Kite Hill, Miyokos, Tree Nut Cheese all make great soft cheeses.

I love Chao and Violife! Tofutti is an old classic too, but the newer brands to me, taste slightly better. Chao slices and the shredded are awesome for taste and meltability, and the Violife feta and smoked provolone are hard to tell from the real thing in my opinion!

I disagree with tofutti being a convincing cream cheese spread, especially about it having the tang. I add salt, sugar, and lemon juice as soon as I bring it home and mix it. Makes it much better for me.

I still think that we should eat some cheese and yogurt, It helps a lot with the digestive process and It's a great source of calcium, especially aged cheese. But I also think that it's weird that we're the only animals that drink milk after being babies.

3:57 I’ll give you the “in the name of science” credit, but 4:06 imho the sainthood goes to Max - sorry not sorry. I started watching this channel with other motives - Instant Pot Indian stuff (I’m old & on a budget). But because of you I checked out the cruelty claim - for and against from industry players, dairy farmers big & small, avoiding the sensationalism of obvious abuses… I was wrong. There’s little doubt in my mind now that whether I like it or not, there’s no such thing as cruelty-free dairy anything, even at the micro scale. It hurts but thank you.🙏

Cheese is the one thing I really haven't missed. Which is strange, since I ate a lot of it before- and I enjoy vegan cheese when I have it now and again. I've been vegan 9 years- it'll be 10 years this NYE- but I think the foods I miss the most are the ones my grandma used to cook for me before she died. Of course, you can never recreate that kind of memory. Her chicken and dumplings, deviled eggs, greens with bacon. I've had vegan replicas of all this but I think without my grandma, it'll never be the same.

How could you neglect to mention miyokos cheese? Try a couple of the miyokos cheese wheels and realize how delicious they are! Nice video nisha, keep it up

I only kept in a few taste tests for the video because I didn't want to make this a 30 minute video lol, but I mention her cheese wheels in my blog post of my favorite vegan cheeses at the grocery store!

You guys in the USA are so lucky, in Europe (especially in France) it's really hard to get your hands on vegan cheese, and people make fun of you when you talk about it... However, my local supermarket just released a whole new aisle with vegan cheese (finally... In 2021 🙌😂)

Violife's cheeses are the best. I'm not a vegan, but I do like eating more plant-based foods. I wish they could get a cream cheese that was right. They are getting close, but mostly they are just too bland.

Love all your videos including this one on cheese. I have just one problem with the vegan cheeses out there. I also am vegan for Animal rights but try to avoid unhealthy fats and most of these have coconut or palm oil. Wish there were some that didn't include these fats.

I live in a country where there are literally no stores or supermarkets to buy vegan cheese from💔 online stores have some vegan products and there are two or three restaurants in the whole big country that starts making burgers and cakes but still no one makes vegan cheese

Heard Buf is a vegetarian cheese. Its made from grass fed buffalos. I went vegan for 28 days and lost 26 pounds. Last year I ditched cow's milk after watching the Netflix movie The Game Changers. I found out Arnold Schwarzenegger drink almond milk which I was never really in love with until last year. I started to drink it now I drink about two gallons a week roughly. I love meat but I eat less then I used to. I enjoy eggs also I even put the egg shell in my protein shake for more calcium in my body. I also eat tofu if I eat meat I mostly go for grass-fed beef. I hate cows milk I drink almond milk. I feel much better without cows milk almond milk is so much better.

Thanks to you (and others on youtube) i have tried slowly to incorporate vegan and vegetarian dishes to my diet, hoping one day i will completely switch, but i don't understand why a lot of people in these communities seems to be completely blind to human cruelty and suffering when calling some ingredient or dishes "cruelty free". A dish is really cruelty free when using vegetable or fruits harvested by slave (at worst) or unpaid/subpaid workers (at best)? I say that because i see a lot of internalized guilt in things like cheese, eggs, openly saying that we shouldn't support that (and i agree), but everytime someone use a lemon, a tomato, or a simple almond, is like... normal, totally harmless and ethical, like vegetables descent from the sky and arrives on shelves by god, and not by a lot of workers or even children coerced in those industries. I will always be an advocate for veganism and vegetarianism, but i think we need to make clear that eating cheese, or an egg, is not more despicable than eating a banana, as cruelty is a part of how it was produced. I want to eat a REALLY cruelty free dish, i honestly think it's possible and i think veganism is a fundamental part of it, but it's not enough. Anyway, i think this is one of the best vegan channel on youtube and i like the vibes it gives.
