I Made A HUGE Mistake On My Trailing Arms! Ultimate Land Rover Discovery Build Episode 29

Today was a tough lesson. I did my best to estimate the coil over length on my Land Rover Discovery but without having the rest of the suspension components installed it wasn't accurate enough. This will cost us more time but at least Bilstein has helped me come up with a solution! I'm waiting on parts, but we will build a custom coil over in the next episode. One that will meet the exact dimensions of our project while still retaining the high performance of this specific coil over.
Thank you for watching! I hope you can learn from my mistakes, and I hope you enjoyed the video!

This is by far my favorite channel on RU-vid so keep up the great work. I do have one small complain though, recently you started to put massive amounts of text on the screen instead of doing voice overs for it all. For someone who has eyesight issues without my glasses (which I never can find...), its really hard to read it especially when its white text on a moving background. It would be awesome to hear more of the voice overs or make it easier to read with a solid background. Complaining over! Keep up the awesome work Nate. Cant wait to see how the Samurai turns out.

Hello Nate, I have the Bilstein 8125 coilovers, they are pretty much the same Bilstein coilover you have. I removed the foam jounce bumpers that are on the shaft because it holds on to moisture and causes corrosion to start at the bottom of the shaft and that corrosion will travel up the shaft under the chrome.

Excellent video! Thank you for keeping it real. I have learned so much from trying things that didn't work, at least not as well as I thought it would, and then having to fix or improve my "failed" attempt. For the record, I wouldn't consider ordering the wrong coil over length a mistake. The only thing you could have done differently is order multiple lengths then send the ones back that didn't fit, but since everyone is waiting a long time for coil overs, I'm thankful you didn't take that approach. Besides, it sounds like we might get to learn how to stretch them as a result. That's a trick I'm anxious to learn! Thanks for all of the ways you are making the off-road industry better Nate!

Order a set of Kings today and you might get lucky and see them in 9 months. A year wait is quite common at this point. Same story with Fox and Sway-A-Away. Bilstein is a bit faster, but 4-6 months is still an eternity for what used to be off-the-shelf parts. Shock lead times are just pure insanity these days.
@StormbornJKU

@@WhyBeNick I do plan on doing king coilovers in the front of my JKU in the future. I’ll likely look at buying used shocks rather then new because of this.
@kavno
@kavno Год назад
I have the opposite approach to shocks. You find the preferred shock/coilover for the job and mount the brackets accordingly. Make it fit. If there's an absolute size limitation, then factor that in when ordering shocks. But I always make the bracket fit the shock, not the other way around.

We all make or made things , while some made a mistake going with the flow , while others live more intentionally & discovered they selected errors ... I select errors or poor options unfortunately they are often discovered when & where they surface .. I am so grateful they surface before it snow balls into a crisis of great proportions ... life threatening & such ! I like it that you share yours & what you select to make it all work properly !

I feel your pain. With the current fox/king/bilstein lead times, you kinda have to guess and order, and try to make things work. More than once a coil over ordered for a specific project didn't fit, and that coil over ended up on a different project. Roll with it.

Those diesel heaters are hard on the lungs. I understand you don't want to freeze, I've used them too. Please take a look at ceiling mounted radiant tube heaters. They are very efficient and not exceedingly expensive. I think what makes a professional is learning to overcome your mistakes. You learn to be more careful in the first place because of the time, money, and frustration, but also to be creative and flexible when poop occurs. I really enjoy your videos and learn so much from them. Thank you and your family. My understanding of weld through primer is that it has a terrible name. It actually contaminates the weld. Apparently it's designed to be sprayed where you can't get after welding for corrosion protection, but should be cleaned from the actual weld area. It also needs to be removed before painting. It is not paint primer. Collision Hub has a RU-vid video on it, and 3M also does ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y317f2KP-z4.html

That was the reason I retired my 1992 Ford Ranger 4.0 4x4 5spd, holes in the frame behind coil brackets that didnt have drain holes. 400,000 kms, with a different motor that didn't sound very good, the final day it ran under its own power was about 3-4 hrs of wheeling through about 3ft of snow. Motor was knocking like a diesel when I got home, pulled it apart and found the 6th cylinder rod bearing to be in 3 pieces (yes the top half wore down that far that there was almost nothing left). Was a good truck, fixed it a lot, still needed a lot of work but wasn't worth it. Now I have a 2010 Ranger Sport 4.0 4x4 5spd which I bought the weekend before blowing the motor.

You mentioned cutting out the wheel wells to fit bigger tyres.....Big problems....the rear door closes onto the top of the wheel arches and the rear seat sits on them, also the rear seatbelt mounts are on the arch as well. Would be OK if you want to loose the rear doors but then as you use it as a 'family' vehicle if you have no rea doors the front seats do not tip to allow rear access. TTFN

Is there not an option from Bilstien to offset the lower mounting hole of the shock? I believe I've seen screw on bottom eyes from other brands that have the actual eye 1"-2" up in front/rear of the shaft instead of directly below the shaft. Not sure how much room you have inside your lower control arm to allow for the shock shaft to drop lower into it so you can bolt up to the original location on the control arm.
