I Made a Latch Hook Moss Rug While Stuck in a Hotel!

I haven’t seen rug wool for sale in so long…. And I don’t have the patience to cut it myself. But I made several large kits when I was a kid. And my mom just gave me two garbage bags full of precut yarn from a crafter hoarder friend who recently passed away. So maybe I’ll be making some rugs in the near future.

My hook rug tips: TIP #1: WEAR GLOVES - Latex gloves made for house cleaning and dishwasher OR the thin garden gloves with the rubberized palms and fingers. I use the latter. TIP #2: Fold the edges where three to five hooks areas are from the edge towards the center for it to be strong enough not to ever come apart and do those first so the edges won't cut or irriate when you do the rest of the rug. TIP #3: If you want to do hook rugs THE ORIGINAL WAY like how my grandmother taught me. Use a CROCHET HOOK and BURLAP. My grandmother kept burlap bags that a lot of food items were originally packaged in. Hook rugs were developed by the poor and they used things from scraps of fabric to yarn or string scraps on burlap bags. So even with the modern Hook Rug Canvases,mI still use my crochet hooks.

2/3 a remote lenght... it is true what they say, Americans will happyly use *any* measuring systhem as long as it's not metric :D Nice project!

When I started latch hooking in the 70s we put masking tape around the canvas. I still do it today. It helps protect your hands and anything else the canvas might touch.

I have been learning to make tabletop roleplay type terrains for polymer clay dioramas. And quilting. And I bought a punch needle and canvas during the panini after watching someone make art rugs that way. Seeing this rug, plus the artists you linked, is making me wonder if textile dioramas could be a fun thing to try. I’ve also been watching Rachel Maksy embroider a moss bodice, and the Closet Historian make beaded bug brooches, and now my head is swimming with ideas to combine all these disparate elements into small scale textile versions of the clay and resin dioramas I’ve been trying to replicate. 🤯

I was once asked if I had a new kitten because of the multitude of scratches on my arms. No, I was just too lazy to bind the edges of my needlepoint canvas and paid the price in blood.....

Pro tip for pompoms: Use multiple strands of yarn in various colors and sizes to build one pompom. It will give you fun textures and patterns that you wouldn't get by using just one yarn to build it!

For future reference: pull from the inside of the yarn ball. There will be a somewhat tangled clump of yarn with one end going into the innards of the ball, and when you untangle it, that's the end you want to work with. It behaves much better than unwrapping from the outside. Also, you can use multiple strands of yarn at once while wrapping a pompom so it goes faster. Depending on your scissors and yarn thickness, you can also cut your rug strands several at a time! EDIT: lol you just mentioned the center yarn trick! And those scissors so look like a pain.

Your vid’s are such a highlight of my week. One tip I remembered from rug hooking when I was a kid is to use masking tape folded over the edge, all around, when you’re working on it. It covers the super sharp pointy bits on the edges of the canvas, so it doesn’t catch on things, or scratch you all to hell. It also prevents fraying of the edges. You remove the tape before binding and finishing it.

I have wanted one of those rugs forever, and I never thought of attempting it myself. I've been interested in tufting rugs, which I believe can also be done by hand (without the big fancy gun), so if I manage to do that, you'll be the inspiration for that, and for that, I thank you! Yours looks AMAZING and I'm so happy that you're now settled in your new home.

Your rug turned out beautifully! The little stones are my favorite part too. Dollar Tree has quite a good crafting section these days including several sizes of pom pom makers and tons of yarn. Along the lines of other projects, I have been seeing these cute abstract shaped mirrors with moss around the edges (especially settled at the bottom). Could be a cute way to take pics of yourself in your studio as well as use up your leftover yarn. Maybe with some large stones and your pretty plants around it? I’m so glad that you got your ceilings fixed. Looking forward to seeing your new floors and other home projects!

You do realise, every 'like' you get is really a 'love' ❤️ ,we just don't have that option. I loved 😍 ♥️ that you managed to find a project that didn't require your normal accoutrements that you use. I might also give this a try, I have way too much yarn that needs a project. When I move back to my place I'm going to pull up the thread bare carpet, which will mean I'll need a mat beside my bed. This looks like a good one to make.

I learned from a lovely old friend that if you buy second hand yarn, you'll want to make sure that it's not pulled tight if it's wrapped into a ball 🧶. You want it to have some stretch in it. If it doesn't have that stretch, your project will warp over time. That bit of advice saved who knows how many projects from ruin! I gave my yarn that I'd purchased second hand that wAs stretched out to a friend who is just learning, but if you have some of that in your stash? This is a perfect craft for it! I love it! Yes! I had the same thought process when I thought of just buying one. Ali Spagnola made a video making a rug of her dog and made it seem approachable, and it gave me the confidence that "I can do that too!" and the push to "just do it already!" Your video is doubling down on the "seriously, Eryn. just do it!" energy.

The rug is beautiful - I have been looking at a gutting gun but like you said for that you need a frame ... But the rug would be done in an afternoon! When I was a kid my mum made a rug - it is now in my sitting room ... It's over 45 years old and still looks great.

The rug is really pretty. We did something similar to this as a school art project & used burlap fabric & a punch needle so loops could be different lengths. Your poms & different size loops add so much more texture. I love it.

Years ago a yarn shop nearby retired, so I bought boxes and boxes of precut yarn in those little bales. I have the boxes in the attic, waiting on rainy days to start my own rug❤

You could use tandoor embroidery for the water in your next rug project. It is basically crochet through canvas. And you have very long, agile toes.

Congratulations on moving in!! As a multi-crafter, and based on your embroidery experience, I would like to recommend Yubinuki. These are ring thimbles that are highly decorated. Because if you are going to make something, why not make it beautiful. 😄

Wow, this brings back memories. Mom did an Oriental rug that she designed from a wallpaper she loved. She put the canvas in the washer with fabric softener overnight to soak and then did the rinse cycle twice. Her yarn was all pre-cut and packaged. Using the latch hook was a diagonal in and out. Twist, push, twist, pull. She ended up taping her thumb and first finger bc of the blisters. The gloves your hubby chose are brilliant. Finger dexterity and feel. Yes, work row by row. I was curious how you were working around rounded sections. Mom's joke: she was the Happy Hooker. LMBO She bound the edges with twill tape and I don't remember if she backed it or not. I DO know that it was machine washable. Animals, kids and everyday use necessitated that.

I was a kid who LOVED crafts. But latch hook was one that I did not vibe with. The rug is beautiful!!! But three weeks of making wee knots that is a labor of love.

Also my grandpa used to make latchhook rugs, there was a time where you could buy big kits for all sorts of shapes and designs (they came with a canvas the correct size and fabric binding and possibly the glue as well and also a sign that you could sew on that said "made by hand") and he'd just sit in his study working on them for hours. There were several bug or other animal rugs for my sister and I when we were kids and my parents house still has so many doormats and rugs he made, although I think a wall hanging that used to be there isn't up anymore. There were also several pillow covers. The moss rug turned out really cool! If I can find some canvas maybe there's another fiber art I could get into.....

I LOVE this! It's so whimsical and fairy 🧚‍♀️ 🧚‍♂️ like. I was surprised you didn't rubber glue the back. I mean the felt was a super nice touch but even if you just used mod podge it would assure that the stands are attached to the backing. But there is a rubber that would hold the fibers in place and prevent the rug from slipping (think bathroom throw rugs?) Regardless it is stunning! I'm so so so in love! I don't think I'm ambitious enough to do this project but if I do there must be a few red and white pom poms for mushrooms! 🍄🍄🍄

My mum and grandparents in the UK used to make semi circular rugs like this in the air raid shelters during WW2. They were printed with designs and were used in front of the fireplace. They lasted for many decades and unfortunately got thrown out when my nan's house was sold in the 1970's. For Christmas in 1963 my mum and dad bought me a tiny door mat size rug kit with a black Poodle dog on it. I loved making it and wish I still had it. Xx

We have two giant rugs and a few matching pillows that are latch hooked that my dad made while in university. I think he just hunkered down and did nothing except latch hook and write his thesis for the 6 years he spent getting graduate degrees lol. But this was so fun to watch and really made it seem very approachable, since latch hooking is something I've wanted to get into for years and years because I love my dad's rugs. Congrats on the new house! I did a similar thing when making an all over fringe jacket. I took a knitted cheap cardigan and looped the lengths of yarn through! Took like 80 hours, but it was worth it in the end. I also only used a crochet hook because I didnt know those latch hooks exist :0 But now I know for next time

At first, I thought you were making a bathroom rug of actual moss. I thought cool I want to make but don't know how. Then you pulled out the latch hook backing and my hands and arms automatically went "eewww! Pain! No! Don't touch! Didn't you learn this!" It turned out so cool! ❤❤❤❤

I've never made a latch hook rug before, so I don't know how well this will work. But one thing that I saw when looking at other latch hook moss rugs is when you want to make really short sections, use a fluffier yarn and weave it around the canvas in one long strand instead of tying it. the fluffier yarn will fill the gaps, and you won't have to cut it short and worry about cutting the knots, but you will end up with a lower profile section.

My granny made rag rugs, some using scrap fabric latch hooked through hessian sacks, so you can do it for cheap if you hoard scraps... she also made woven rugs using scraps for the weft. If you have the space for it you could give weaving a go!

Yay for moving in! I must admit I'm not surprised you ended up doing something completely different while in the motel. It was a project that you knew would take time but time is what you had and it was a bit of a challenge to keep your brain engaged! It turned out so well!!

Congratulations getting into the house!! It been a very long time since match hooking was a thing in my life. I really think it was the 60's but it could have been the early 70's. Anyway I remember the edges of the canvas where either bound with fabric or tape. As all the designs were square the edges were folded in and latched into the rug. The only other thing I would mention is that you might want a no slide backing. Felt and hardwood could end up with unintended consequences! If my grandcats were there they would be surfing your room on the rug!

I think it looked great, and hopefully you enjoyed making it. The whole way through this, in my head I had wonderful memories of my Grandad making latch hook rugs and how he taught us how to do them, and also how he would let us 'help' with ones he was making. I still have the latch hook he gave me, and now I may well be inspired to use it. Thank you .

You need those rubberized palm and finger garden gloves for that prickly hook rug canvas. Do not forget the iron on backing that is like the iron on stabiliser for sewing so that the yarn never comes out. Then put a non-slip backing on top of that.

My grandma’s house had latch hooked carpet on her spiral staircase and on top of the wood storage box (which could easily fit 2-3 people sitting on it) that was done mostly by her daughters. It was really special knowing the story behind it. And your rug turned out fabulous, I am a little bit inspired (maybe I can make it a lunch break project)

Congratulations on moving into your house! Man, I LOVED latch hook as a kid. I made so many rugs, turning them into cushions and I gave one as a rug to a friend. My last one was a giant tiger that was probably 3' × 5'. It literally took a couple of years, since I only worked on it for a couple weeks a year when I was home from touring with my theatre troupe. That moss rug is cute, I might be tempted to do something similar (and smaller) but all in purples.

Yes, but it will give you something to do while you're sitting around going nutz with all your crafty stuff packed away in storage. You were buying sanity points, not spending money on craft supplies! (this is how I justify gardening expenditures). I'm so glad your house is finally yours, that must be such a relief. In the midst of chaos, of course. The rug looks adorable. Do you have much trouble with it sliding around? I've ended up putting that nonskid stuff for drawers under things like rugs and runners and tablecloths that keep migrating about on their surface... also makes a great hand protector for rough surfaces.

My tip - put two sturdy nails into a small board at double the length of yarn you need. Wrap the yarn around the two nails end-to-end, and cut across the center between the nails. Two cuts, lots of yarn ready for latching. Kind of like this _|______|_ . Also, thick cotton string makes a great sheepskin rug.

Not having read all comments, I might be repeating things, I have some latchhooking advice and also I am aging myself. When I was little (kindy age, and wanting to help my parents, in not really helping), my parents had a 2 meter by 3,5 meter rectangular rug they hooked over months on. We had a hooking frame, the carpet was strapped into to work on. We wrapped the yarn around the hook before inserting it into the mesh, and then wrapped the ends around the hook and pulled the ends through the loop. It is a bit faster and more stable knot that way, and probably less strain on hands and canvas. Your puppy approved of the squishy rug already, before you attached the backing :) Makes me want to.spin, dye and design my own yarn for such a rug now. Before doing so, I need to finish my other long term project, though.

I have been collecting yarn for latch hooking for years from thrift stores. I have done a couple small projects and was so happy to find that I can still latch hook with my arthritic hands and I am not sure what kind of a design I want to make. Oh those peoples rugs are amazing.

I love this! Now I want a moss rug, too! (Then reality sinks in and I realize I would absolutely not finish a project this large; I barely finished an 18x24 latch-hooked wall hanging when I was young and flexible.) Congratulations on getting into your new home, and kudos for having time to set up your corner vignette for the closing sequence while finishing that rug. Cheers!

Oh my! I can't decide whether to laugh or cry at your individual piece cutting. May I suggest in the future choosing a length, adding a few milimeters to that as a measurement? Then cutting cardboard to half that measure on it's width. Reinforce the cardboard edges for stability. Then loosely wrap your yarn around it. Tape or mark along one side then, careful of slipping, cut along the marked edge. You will end up with multitudes of pieces in close approximation of your desired length. This might be too late for this project but it's how my mother added border to a piece she wanted a bit larger than the kit. It is also a great way to supplement or customize if pieces get lost or one of the colours don't quite fit your aesthetic. You needn't worry if the cat, dog, child or vacuum stole away with some of your rug yarn ever again. 😆 Much love and thanks for reviving happy childhood memories!

Exquisite! I love that you are able to be inspired by photos then figure out how to do it yourself ❤. Your pupper clearly needs a big soft rug in every room😂. It’s absolutely adorable how much he loves it❤ I’ve been researching various rug techniques for years and there are several I want to try but haven’t yet buckled down and started one. I’ve got lots of punch and tufting tools that I acquired with vintage sewing machines that I rescued at estate sales. I really want to try twining and toothbrush rugs too. There is also a couple of methods where you sew fabric scraps to a foundation that look really cool 😂. Someday I will settle on one and actually make it😂

Congrats on the house! Super cute rug. Can't wait to check out the two referenced artists. Just to throw you another technique - there is lockerhook which gives a flat surface (water?). Lockerhook takes just one tool - long skinny hook a la crochet with an eye at the end, long thin fabric and cord, like a thin clothesline.

My mom taught me to always tape the edges of the mesh canvas. Protects your skin and keeps the mesh from unraveling! She used J&J bandage tape and wrapped it around the edge. Then, to work in the center, you can roll the edge into sort of a tube to be able to reach the center!

Love this rug! My gran used to make rag rugs or proggy rugs using scraps of material. But the moss rug is so pretty!

I used that stuff on stuffed animals a couple years ago. Cut the pattern pieces out with that & canvas, sewed it all together, and then latch hooked the yarn before stuffing the pieces. It was really cute as the top of a stuffed hedgehog.

My husband is a tough customer and he loves your rug. I just wanted you to know that, because it's a major compliment. I just adore the rocks. When we were growing up, everything was one flat size, none of these varying sizes like you find today. I wish RU-vid Comments offered a way to show you what we made in the past, but I do think that was one of my favorite memories in life! Is there a way to make a neutral patterned 10x13 living room rug? We just can't afford what they offer these days!

I very much appreciate the tips on some of the practical thing like matching the hook and yarn size, the scratchy issue of the canvas and how to best hold the project while working it. All super useful info. I might have ironed a iron on backing on the back and possibly added a non slip material to the underside, but your method was totally great as well. Will I make one? Maybe. I’m a professional felter so I never have time to make my own projects for myself but this definitely give me 💡 and you are very enjoyable to watch! Happy creating!

I think my mother still has the half completed rug she wanted to make (or rather, have the kids make) in 1968-1970. I did a lot of latch hook work when I was young. The interminable yellow rug was made with wool yarn.
