The 42" C2 that Linus JUST installed is great, but it's not a monitor. ASUS has released their PG42UQ based on the same panel, but now with less annoying ABL and proper wake-up functionality. Despite the great display, some things don't quite go according to plan...

This has all the essential elements of a good LTT video: 1. Linus drops something. 2. Things don’t work. 3. Writer gets frustrated with Linus because he’s out of control. 4. David giggles.

Then I think about the hours I spent trying to get my Switch to output its audio over bluetooth to my PC because all of my audio gets routed through it and outputs to one device, my headphones. Which normally works fine with the Switch when it's docked but I really wanted to be able to lay back and hold the Switch and get audio through my usual setup instead of having to plug my headphones into the Switch each time. Because I like to watch stuff in the background while I play games. Seriously, think I spent like 7 hours on my day off looking up stuff and trying new things to get it to work. And I'm 99% sure that what ended up working was something I had tried like 100x earlier that day...

With videos like this I would love to see a summary at the end explaining what was accomplished. I’ve been watching LTT and similar channels in the community for a few years now and I like to think that I understand most of what’s happening in these niche projects. That said, with something as ambitious as the Sebastian Tech House project I’d love to have a better understanding of the connections being made by the end of the video. It’s entertaining nonetheless, but personally I feel more engaged when I have an idea of how attainable this type of setup could be for someone outside of this level of knowledge.

He's got a computer down in the server room/basement and he's cloning the display between two of those Asus OLED's... He was trying to have the 2nd display running off of a KVM (the fancy one from Level1 Techs), so he could have 2 computer setups on that station. This was two complicated things... 2 locations, 1 compute... but one of those locations was also 2 computers... In the end, they couldn't get the 1 location, 2 computers thing working, but they 2 locations, 1 computer is. KVM is really difficult with higher bandwidth signals and it's likely caused by how many signal conversions are happening over the already long distance they have that optical ran... It's still cool and doesn't detract from how gorgeous both of those monitors are
@superslash7254

@@trevalyon8610 I've been wondering for a while why KVMs just kind of fell off the face of the earth once DVI, HDMI, and DP became a thing and bandwidth does make the most sense as an answer. Using the LG C1 as a monitor: Service remote can be used to disable the brightness limiter completely. Enable WakeonLan. Use a smart home setup (like homeassistant) and motion sensors / bluetooth / whatever to do presence detection. When you leave the desk/room, turn off the C1. *As you re-enter* turn it back on and (if needed) restore the input settings. This is super annoying but now works pretty flawlessly.

At 0:52 Linus mentions "cursed auto dimming function", I seem to have the same issue with the older LG OLED55B8PUA, and 1:42 he mentions adjusting some setting using a special service remote in a hidden menu, where could I learn more about this? I seem to have the same issue with using the older LG OLED55B8PUA as a computer monitor, where the brightness reverts to full brightness only when I cause a lot of screen activity, otherwise it gradually becomes dimmer when there isn't much change in what is being displayed, e.g. when working on a bunch of code in terminal windows. When I phoned LG customer support about it, they insisted that "it must be some issue with my computer or with my display drivers", but the computer doesn't have this issue on any other display.

Evidently you haven't been watching all of these videos as he doesn't have a tower, he has a rack computer, as does Yvonne. They have a server rack(the big pink thing where Linus kept running back to for fiddling with the KVMs) in their mechanical room in the basement that houses the computers, Ubiquiti Network and Protect system. As Steve said, the goal is to have his rack PC accessible from two different locations in the house - one upstairs and one downstairs. Another way about this would be to go the route of a client-server model and putting NUCs/thin clients where each machine is to be accessed but that also has a lot of caveats like lag and virtualisation issues, plus the inherent complexity creating more failure points.

Actually you can defeat the ABL (on LG OLEDs) to the same degree as on the Asus monitors by lowering contrast to ~80, depending on the specific panel. Then the fullscreen D65 white brightness is around 230nits, but that is only in SDR. In HDR, every LG OLED goes down to ~150nits max at fullscreen white. In this regard LG OLEDs are better than the Asus ones (you measured ~100nits HDR fullscreen white). It would be interesting to see how bright the Asus monitors get when displaying fullscreen white in SDR, but unfortunately you did not provide measurements for that.

Yeah, it's Linus, he complains about everything. Got used to it. I got my C1 too and have absolutely no problems with it after 2 years of constant use (up to 12 hrs a day sometimes as Windows monitor lol). One irritating thing I had since day I bought it is 1 dead pixel in the middle of the screen, but it stopped bothering me.

Nor I. I had purchased an LG OLED for a desktop monitor, but because it ran natively at 4k 60hz there was a dramatic drag when moving the mouse cursor. That is unacceptable when using CAD software, so I returned it and purchased the Aorus 43" display. It was more expensive, but not by much.

@@Kmaitland89 - The television did not run 4k at 120hz, but rather 60hz. This is fairly common for televisions under 55 inches. Monitors usually run at higher refresh rates and that is what I was referring to. When I switched back from a television to a monitor with a higher refresh rate the lag disappeared.

I tell you a drawback. The ASUS PG42UQ costs €1799,- here in The Netherlands while I can get the 42" LG C2 for €929,-. For that price difference I have no problem buying a factory remote for €10,- to disable auto dimming and installing LGTV Companion so it starts when my computer starts. And I see no problem connecting my rtx3080 with HDMI2.1 instead of using displayport.

Plouffe going "Yes! Hahahaa!" makes it sound like he and Linus had some kind of off-camera bet going on whether he would drop something during the shoot, or not, and Plouffe was starting to think nothing would be dropped, only for Linus to do a drop mistake at the very end.

You didn't make it worse, tvs and monitors receive much rougher handling at the retail level and they are fine because the packaging is designed with that in mind, just not the "sharp object through the side kind of handling.

Being able to play a game on a system that doesn't sit next to you (or anywhere CLOSE to where you're sitting) is quite a challenge. And then trying to have MULTIPLE desks and being able to connect to it DIRECTLY, albeit from quite a distance is something else entirely. I remote into my systems ALL the time, but I've never tried to remote in for gaming like that

@@stevenlu7324 Uhhh....yes and no. I mean, I have a centralised I think it's like a 21U rack, so in theory, it WOULD be nice to have to power and cool a tiny space and then basically just run "extension" cables to the places that need or want access to it with something more powerful than a thin client/remote desktop back to the main stack. For what I currently do, remote desktop/VNC/ssh works well enough for now. But it would be nice to be able to get console access at speeds/picture quality and frame rates > TinyPilots iKVM.

0:52 auto-dimming is a massive PITA. I'm really surprised it took you guys so long to mention it. I had to go into my LG service menu to disable it and it's the reason why I won't be recommending LG OLEDs to anyone in real life until they fix the bug that dims dark scenes to obscene levels. edit: this comment got stolen word for word... okay if you guys want more info on the bug, there's an HDTV Test video talking about OLED bugs, it's the first one. I haven't had it happen in bright scenes, I've had it happen in dark scenes, including the ending of Dune, which is the most common movie where this happens according to what I've read online. Given that this is supposed to protect the panel from overly bright images, the algorithm is clearly bugged out and LG needs to fix it. It's insane that you have to risk voiding your warranty on a TV that costs as much as a car just because LG won't fix a bug.

Honestly for $1400 this looks pretty damn good and the fact its 16:9 instead of some rediculous aspect ratio like 21:9 or 32:9 is very nice. If I saw correctly it looked like you could even set it to emulate a 21:9 monitor which is neat honestly.

I still think a complete guide on how to do a similar setup with two workplaces with the I/O yourself would be amazing, both on the expensive and the "budget". Not so much focusing on the displays and peripherals but more on the hardware that is required to set this up, from KVM to different type of cabling, docks but also PC-requirements and all sort of things.

I have a suggestion for a video for you. So OLED monitors are becoming more common, you have monitors like this one and then you have the Alienware AW3423DW. One thing with both of those displays though, they're not as fast as a lot of VA or IPS panels in terms of refresh rate. So here's my idea, if you take something like the alienware and run it at 2560x1440 and compare it to a 240hz 1440p monitor like the Samsung Odyssey G7, which has better motion performance? As far as I see it, even at slower refresh rates OLED should still have superior motion clarity but worse input lag because there are less frames. But it would be interesting to see that quantified in some way. There are pros to both lower motion blur and lower input lag so it ends up being a choice the consumer has to make based on their gaming preferences.

Yeah dude, TVs as monitors has rarely worked out. I don’t recommend them unless they have very simple firmware that lets you do what you want. But that’s not likely to happen in the era of Smart TVs. For computers, always a monitor.
