Still love this livetrak l-8 mixer but I was wrong about it in my first review, and I needed to correct that info! PLUS... I do an update about my feelings on it after one year of use!
amzn.to/34ytcX5
The two other mixers I mention (that I would consider instead of the livetrak l-8)....
Tascam Model 12:
amzn.to/34EEGIt
QSC TouchMix 8:
amzn.to/38sMrT8
So... I wish I hadn't stuffed up in the first video... but I did. The information about the jack to xlr and trs to xlr is not quite accurate in that video, so I wanted to correct it in case some of you watching that video were put off by it, or wanted to use it in a different way etc.
I also missed out some info in that review about the l-8 being able to be battery powered, and it's multitrack capabilities. Anyway, hopefully covered it now, and apologies to Zoom and anybody who watched the first review and missed the info you needed on it.
PLUS... this was fun to make haha! so if nothing more, perhaps you get a laugh out of watching the video, and if you already have a livetrak I hope you're enjoying it as much as I am mine!
xoxo

Hi, David. I have a question. Do you know if activating the Phantom Power affects just all of the XRL inputs OR the XRL inputs AND the TRS inputs of all the inputs? This is important for me to know if I should go for the L12 or the L8 can do the trick to recordall the instruments + the Phantompowd Condenser mic ate same time? Thanks! You might have to use a voltimeter to check it out The doubt is because I'd like to record 2 Guitars, 1 Bass, 1 keyboard 1 Drum Machine + 1 condenser Phantom Powered Mic at the same time with the unit, and I'd want to do it safely
@Tom-sd2vi
@Tom-sd2vi 2 года назад
The reason why you should not use the TRS to XLR cable is because that cable is for a balanced mono signal and the headphone out busses from the ZOOM board are unbalanced stereo busses. It is not only an issue because it sounds like crap and the volume is off but also might damage the board or the speaker amplifier in the long run. What you should use is a Jack stereo to Mono splitter, set the pan of the monitor channel fully to right or left and run that one of the mono jacks into the monitor speaker.

Continuing our conversation from the previous video, I have a hard time understanding how it could be that a headphone output would lack the power to drive a line level input, and I'm wondering if there isn't something at play with your setup that is causing this behaviour.

Hi David, i agree that the output signal is very low, i tried it myself lately and had to workaround by routing to my yamaha ag06. Hey Selumiel! I am not overly familiar with the Flow 8 by Behringer - but it looks to be a better option if your main goal is live shows/performances. If you're after more on the recording side and ok with editing audio afterwards I would go with the Zoom L8. I hope that helps somewhat! @davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 3 года назад
Hey Terenzio.. yes, you could cue music quite easily with this. It sounds a little odd but works well and is much simpler than it will sound with me writing it out. Have your headphones running into the mix A (or B or C) which can switch between hearing the main mix and mix A. Have mix A set with the level up on channel 3, then you can happily cue a record to the point you want and it'll only be in your headphones. Once you set the levels you want on Mix A, you don't have to ever switch back to it - it's just for you to hear. Then just adjust the fader on the main mix for that cue'd channel when you're ready. 😊

Hello David. Thank you for a (well two) very informative videos about the L-8. One thing I wonder about though is that at 4:35 you say that a competing product (QSC TouchMix 8) allows you to plug in a USB and record individual channels (I would assume via a DAW). Is this not possible using the L-8? (I can do that using my Zoom H5..) Regards
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 3 года назад
Hi Hallvard. The QSC allows you to plug a USB stick in and record individual channels. It is one of the few products that does not require a DAW or external laptop which is why I would consider it and why it got a mention in this video. The L-8 can also record direct to the SD card with no laptop required. I'm simply comparing products that can do a similar thing, being able to capture each individual track without the need for an external laptop or a DAW. Hope that helps clear things up for you!

Thanks for the excellent video… I have a question… can you record a couple of channels that aren’t passed on to the master output? Eg… I have a DJ mixer and this has a Master and Booth out… will plug those to the L-8 via 4 XLR Chanel’s… Now, I will also plug a 🎤 into a 5th channel of the L-8… What I want is the following… be able to record every channel separately (I know it’s possible) But on the master I only want to have the mic and EITHER the booth or the master (of my DJ mixer) That’s because this is going from master to my ATEM for live-streaming. I hope this makes sense… Possible?! 😅
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 2 года назад
hey Doc! Yes you absolutely can - couple of ways to do this. 1. If you don't need any audio coming out to a live setting you can simply record the channel with the faders on zero - it will capture that channel at the gain level input and you can use it as suits later. 2. Plug everything in as normal and record as normal on each channel. Setup the levels you want on the mix to go into the house system etc via the monitor/mix outputs, and on the master which will go to your ATEM set the levels appropriately also - with the volume fader on zero (not muted) for the channels you don't want. I've done this version for live shows and livestreaming at the same time and it works great. Just remember using the mute button applies to all mixes, so you need to adjust the faders for each mix to the levels you want. 👌

If I am able to play back and add my own percussion etc, would be great.
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun Год назад
hey Blossom, thanks for the question - as soon as you want to trim audio etc then a DAW is usually the best option to go with. You could use something like the livetrak to do this - setting a marker as the starting point rather than trimming the audio, but it would keep playing anything afterwards, and you're going to need to learn how to use the mixer - where it's probably best you spend the time learning the DAW. Which DAW are you using? Can be quite daunting to start with, but there are some really good tutorials, and as you experiment and become familiar with it, it will start to become easy for you - just takes that initial frustration and learning curve though eh?!

@davidshanhun 3 года назад
Hey Ken. Glad you're having fun playing around with it! Just takes a bit of reading regarding the inputs and volume - the mixer is designed to remain at the same level for each channel, and will only adjust volume once the fader reaches the previous level (shown by the lit up led lights on that channel). This is so when you're jumping between mixes, the levels stay the same until you intentionally shift them. Hope that helps! Haven't had any issues with distortion, but sounds like it might be from the headphones not handling the bass very well - especially if it's not showing up on recordings! Feel free to reach out if you get stuck on something - otherwise highly recommend downloading the manual which is online and will help you make sense of some of those quirks!

You need to use a Stereo 6,3 to 2x Mono XLR oder 2x Mono Jack. The headphone outputs are not balanced signals and if you try to plug it into a balanced input on a mixer I won’t work. So you need to split the stereo into two unbalanced mono outputs which you can than combine or feed separately into a mixer or DI box.

Why wouldn't you just use the XLR master out to the speakers?

I do Raymond! The issue is when you are running a monitor as well as the main speakers, and the monitor requires either a different mix, or/and separate output and level. 👌
@risbill1
@risbill1 3 года назад
@@davidshanhun gotcha. Well if the headphone jack doesn't have enough juice then I guess you could try a simple headphone amp. Not sure that's a good solution or if it might introduce noise. Sounds like zoom needs to add line level out option for headphone jacks.
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 3 года назад
@@risbill1 true that! I'm still trying to figure out exactly what it is that's an issue to be honest as keep discovering new options. Headphones work fine, and have now found that running a standard TS cable works just fine to run a monitor. As soon as a balanced trs cable gets introduced all kinds of odd things happen for monitoring - yet that's what get's plugged in for headphones and they work a treat. 🤔Will happily accept input and knowledge on this!
@risbill1
@risbill1 3 года назад
@@davidshanhun I'd look at the specs for your monitors. Most times unbalanced inputs are configured for an input of around -10dBV and the balanced XLR is more like +4dbU. That would definitely translate to a huge difference in volume.

@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 3 года назад
Have tested both TS and TRS and they work, the issue was the level of output they receive. Initially I genuinely thought there was simply no signal which was odd, but it’s simply because the signal is so so low, that I couldn’t hear any output. 👌
@JonWhiten1
@JonWhiten1 3 года назад
@@davidshanhun ok. My thinking was that a TRS to XLR from a headphone out will give this result. The balanced I/P of the speaker, rather than summing L+R from the headphone output, does L-R; which will give you virtually nothing if everything is mono going to the headphone output.

I continue to struggle with this mixer. It works for live practice, but I just can't imagine using it for a gig. I play in a duo and we each like to have our own monitor mix. With no EQ on the monitor outs, I'm leery. Not to mention the TRS XLR problems you've discussed. I have several other issues, too. When trying to use the monitor mixes (mix A, B, etc) into powered speakers via 1/4 inch to 1/4 inch, I can get a signal, but if I try to include a little FX send, it's like I'm sending the whole mix again. It immediately starts feeding back. I also have trouble recording multiple tracks. Sometimes it works, other times I only get one of the tracks recorded. I'll keep it for practicing. Maybe a future update will at least add some EQ to the mains and monitors. Thanks for reading!
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 3 года назад
yeah it's weakest point is live shows for sure eh! Interesting issue when adding fx into the monitor sends - that's a new one for me to come across. With regard to the recording part, that sounds like it might be an SD card that's not compatible with the unit - I'd recommend one of the higher spec'ed ones as it's writing quite a lot of data all at once! Hopefully that helps and you can enjoy all the multitracking parts of it!

@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 3 года назад
heya! My first thought on this is that it sounds like a fault with your unit - I haven't come across anything that would turn the master headphone mix off, and leave the master xlr's on. The only thing I would check is that the master headphone volume knob is turned up (I know I know this is the stupidly simple issue I'm sure you've checked), but the master headphone needs both the master fader at the level you want, plus it's own level turned up. I suspect it's not that, and the other option given your other headphone outputs are working make me suspect it may be a faulty unit 😝
