Nice work on the fence...you are really a detail man! I'm curious though; if the bottom steel rail is to be below grade, don't you think that rust through will be a problem? If so, that will be a real booger to repair. I know it's mostly dry in OK, but I'm sure the landowner will be fertilizing and watering...a good mix for accelerated rusting.

The thing with water is you don't want water to pool. You can mold or buy concrete caps similar to what Austin used on the end caps just in concretrete for bottom of the plint. That will give you decades of no rust. What I use to do is have either the concrete raised just a tad above soil at an angle/pyramid for water to run off or use the cap over and through the post or just installed 2 parts around the base sealed with concrete sealer. It looks tidy and if unnecessary you just angle concrete plint so water dont pool. You can buy or cast your own concrete caps easily. There is a ton of RU-vid videos on how to pour concrete molds or just buy the ones you deem fit. It all can be done on site or precast and inserted over and through post and then sealed with concrete caulking. Possibililities are endless and seal with concrete sealer or if cement stil wet no need. The metal itself tend to start rusting where cuts were made or it was welded. So i clean it with paint thinners at shop and brushed it of where needed with wire brush if there is a bit of rust. Then paint everything with Red oxide primer which is a anti-corrosion coating designed to stop rust formation. You do this on scale by putting lage pieces on "work horses' paint it with compressor and gun ( worth investment if you're thinking long term) or even small scale for diy'er and then just weld your brackets on site as needed if not already prepared at shop. It takes stick welding well if you just chip it in a starting point for the arc bead to grab and then you just clean and touch up your welding with a brush and some oxide. The oxide is cheaper by far if you buy it whole sale otherwise pretty cheap from Box stores. Once explained to a customer the reasoning they will always agree to it in price difference if any. In my opnion it actually is a must. Then you can paint what ever color over it since it is a primer and it also helps your paint to stay durable and keep its color better for years. These little things make a huge difference in quality.

Austin have you ever used Osfo if I spelled it correct? You get it at Fechner pump and supply in Cushing it protects metal from rusting and coming through your paint. You apply it with a little spray bottle and leave it over night and it will have a powder look then you wipe it down and paint. Works great and a gallon will go along ways. If you want to know more about it I can take a picture of the product and send to you.

Great videos Austin! If you're going to use innershield wire, try .030 instead of the typical .035. I use it often for handrails/guardrails and some thicker stuff too and it works better than solid wire because no bottle to haul around and using 1.6/2.0 mm welding rods isn't as fast or fun. Once it's set right it welds beautifully. Keep up the great work!

Hey Austin you used my idea! Just get you a inexpensive mig welder like an Everlast or Hobart dual voltage. It’s what I did. I throw it on the “cart” loaded with some .030 or .035 fluxcore wire and some 10ga drop. It’ll run it on 110 or if near your rig the 220. Welds 35-40% fasted then stick. Trust me you’ll like it!!

@josiahwright7114 4 года назад
Same. Gotta have a center bar, flatbar will get it done, but if the customer approves, angle with a small leg would be best. And the pickets won't just warp, they'll also come right out after they've warped enough. Home Depot's pickets will do it in about 30 minutes.
@workonitm8
@workonitm8 4 года назад
For the sake of appearance, you'll want a full width picket on the end. You can trim 1/2 inch off of several pickets as you get near the end and blend them in with the last six to ten pickets and it will hardly be noticeable.

Just stumbled across your channel recently looking for videos to see how stovepiping is done as my old man, a fitter welder himself, always speaks fondly of watching stovepiping teams work in the UK. I'm a 2nd year boilermaker/fabricator welder apprentice in a shipyard down in Tasmania Australia, humble beginnings that I hope will lead to something greater. I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience, whilst I'm a long way away from being anything near a pipe line welder, (hell I'm only just starting to get the hang of E7016 low hydrogen rods!) I still have learned a lot I can take on and apply to my career in the future.

Hi Austin. As a retired Carpenter and a person who has done some steel work,I'm concerned about rust with your steel near the ground, number one. Number two I'm concerned of the reaction between the tannins in the cedar reacting to the steel and staining the cedar black which could bleed through the paint eventually. I am also concerned about the stability of that long span of pickets, warping in and out relative to the plane of the fence . I hate to cast cold water on that project. It looks like it would be a nice looking fence at least at the beginning. it's true that cedar stays straight generally better than treated pickets but they still have their own way of warping. I wish you well my friend. Thank you.

Great attention to detail as usual and the fabricated track system looks to be a winner. My only question is no centre rail ? Cedar moves. Conditions might be different where you are but if I did a fence with just a top and bottom rail the pickets would all warp to the point they would fall out or have to be replaced. Guess I am just used to seeing top bottom middle rails.

Hey Austin, nice job thinking outside the box! I’m an almost retired fence builder (company owner) in Flower Mound Texas. I’ve been doing residential fences for a little over fourty years. I’ve always said that if you got ten of us fence guys in a room and were asked the proper way to build a fence, we’d all have different answers. So, I like hearing the different ways other guys do things so I can pick and choose some better ways to do those things myself. I’ll give you my take on how I’d do things a little differently on your job: 1) I’d use red steel. No cleaning and paint will stick. 2) We never dog a fence into the ground, we use 2x6 pressure treated base boards at the bottom w/ the fence on top of those. 3) I’d lay that fence out like we do wrought iron fences by welding the bottom first with each section level. Keeping the bottom channel two inches above the ground and tight on the 2x6s. 4) Like a few others have said here, a 2x4 or even a 1x4 should be screwed across the center to prevent the boards from bowing in and out. 5) After all the bottom channels were welded, I’d paint all the posts and channel and then paint the top channel prior to welding. 6) I wouldn’t use anything but pre-stained material. But all and all, you’re did a fantastic job and I admire your skill and expertise. Got to hand it to you for selling what has to be a pretty high dollar fence to that homeowner. 👍

Some of the kids that just want to rig up and go out and hit the row know they arent ready. 5 bucks is a pretty fair price to findout. Id offer money back because if someone is that unhappy its worth 5 bucks just to shut them up. Well after watching I see where you bought a garden cart but I sure don't see where you 'made' a welding cart. Seems you skipped in the to do list the fact that you have a million holes to drill if you are going to put two on each picket! I don't envy doing the ones on the ground or the ones at head height! Not going to be easy even if you use self drillers. First glance it looks a bit thick for those. Going to be a classy if expensive fence.

If you run that 110v machine off of a RV extension cord, it will not stick near as bad. Otherwise you may have to bump your amperes up 20 to 40 amps. The setting the machine is showing is not accurate due to a reduction in available current.

If it were my house, i'd run off that tig200 via house power. someone else's house, I probably would've just bought 250' of lead and a couple tweco connectors, put it on my stinger, and ran around the yard like that. My last job wasn't connected from post to post and I hated having to move when I ran out of lead LOL

Man, I clean my steel pre-weld with Simple Green and a green scotch Brite scrubby. Cheaper than solvents, and nontoxic. That gets it decently clean for welding. Then after all welds and grinds are done, I wipe it all with acetone. I think mineral spirits and paint thinner both leave an oily residue which I think can inhibit some paint adhesion.

A trick I’ve learned is degreaser in a pump up sprayer and a power washer.. hit it with the degreaser and let it soak a minute and power wash it off and it’s ready for paint most of the time. Quicker and the metal turns out cleaner from my experience

Austin, it's probably too late to tell you now but next time use Acetone to clean steel prior to painting. Mineral spirits is good for clean up or paint thinning but sucks for removing oil from steel. Also, on a recent job I had the same thoughts about spraying as far as making a big mess and having a lot of overspray but it really doesn't! I'm talking about using an air sprayer, spray paint cans may be a different story. I reluctantly sprayed this particular job and couldn't have been happier with the results! It looked like a professional paint shop painted it! Most importantly, the customer was tickled pink! Enough about me, very nice job designing the track system! Seems like a lifetime type of fence system.... even for generations to come possibly! Keep up the awesome work! Stay safe down there! Dan @6-4_Fab Glen Rock, PA

Ya, but the fence trac don’t look like it drains water and it’s way thinner material. That’s the trouble with those mass produced products is they tend to get way too cheap. At least with what I’ve came across. That’s why I love doing custom welding work cause it’s usually way more durable than most generic stuff off the assembly line.

@@arosswelding i will agree with you on the lighter material side, iv only installed it once and don't rember if it drains out the bottom or not. But everything is galvanized and powder coated and has a manufacturers warranty. Now iv been a fence contractor for 4 years, have one crew that builds just residential privacy fence and another crew and myself that does ag fencing, feedlots, confinment barns. I will say 9/10 times that residential customers don't notice or care how good and sturdy a custom built product is. They care about speed of installation. Warranty, final look, and how much you disturbed their yard in the process. Not by anymeans saying you arnt doing awsome work because I know you do. And if what your doing is working for you and makes your days enjoyable then keep doing it👍😁

that is a long span and i wonder if the weight of the wood is going to bow that already weakened pc of bottom channel. wood soaks up water when it rains, i've seen a lot of driveway gates, dumpster gates and so on where this was not factored in.
@arosswelding
@arosswelding 4 года назад
I highly doubt it. It’s 10 ga material... and they are only 6-8’ spans. And those pickets are extremely light weight. And the are going to stain them.

Hey Austin, why didn't you included some power coating for the fence for the customer? I would had done a powder coating in black for them. Harbor Freight has a power gun and all you need is in the shop you run a propane space heater and it does a very well job on low budget. This way the stuff won't rust and already has than onsite a perfect finish. So those rails which are so extreme low to the ground and picket all in and such won't rust away. Fence cap's do 4 dot's each corner of 100% silicon inside the post top's and they stay in place even during a hurricane. Use Invoice Ninja so you have all your quotes and invoices together always in sync between your phone and computers. This way you can have all your notes from Quotes also access able so you know what you charged last time and what you might had miss calculated because you can leave private notes in those so your customer won't see those but you sure will.

@markman63 4 года назад
There is onsite welding so powder coating would not be continuous and it would start rusting around the welds, better just paint the whole steel fence.
@lsellclumanetsolarenergyll5071
@lsellclumanetsolarenergyll5071 4 года назад
@@markman63 Not on the pieces been powder coated because the cross rails are bolted to the posts which have welding tab's on. Power will with stand multiple times better water exposure and sub surface as well. Look how the button rail is often in ground contact and also in areas will be buried as well. The wet wood will excel the rust and rot process. Austin had to dig up dirt to make it level but now both sides are sitting higher meaning when rain hits the mud will quickly refill the void with muddy water and leave the mud behind. Also look out the button rail is so close now to the ground you can't paint it below or inside where the metal spaces are so you leave the metal fully exposed. Even if you use an oil paint with a 3/4" nap you will have an extreme hard time to perfectly coat it. The main reason why I always powder coat the rails even if we do at the ends some weld on the 90% perfect are power coated and withstand the environment much much better. And don't forget most state now enforce a work labor material warranty of 12 month. Florida for example does that by law now.
@lsellclumanetsolarenergyll5071
@lsellclumanetsolarenergyll5071 4 года назад
@@markman63 Take a closer look at the button rails. Once installed you will not get it all painted correctly because of the form factor and the 3D surface area on the button rail which is 2 pieces welded together with lot's of spacing's in between. So close to the ground I can promise you no matter how good you paint you will miss a ton of spots. How do I know because I done it myself and also saw others doing the same tricky to paint jobs. And to power coat those upfront than weld them in place and just to have to paint those posts cut down your painting time by hours to half a day in time saving too. Meaning more money in your pocket.
