Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
In the continuing quest of making a comfortable, flattering and #historybounding wardrobe, I wanted to try and incorporate some more medieval vibes into it, so this dress is inspired by a kirtle. I have made a few kirtles over the years (getting better at it with every failure lol) and I've found they can be very comfortable, flattering, easy to make, and very economical in fabric use (all things we love over here!). If you are like me and find modern clothes a bit disappointing (they usually do not make me look good), then maybe try making a few pieces that reflect more how you want to look!
I wore this dress out this past weekend when I visited the beach and some more landscapes and I was warm, comfortable, and I hadn't felt that good about myself in a long time - it was a good reminder of how powerful clothes can be. Anyway! I hope this is helpful if you hope to tackle a similar project yourself. As I mentioned, I had 5 meters of linen, and I ended up having over a meter left over. I also used about half a meter of a heavier linen as interlining for the bodice and one zipper.
I think I will be making a fitted bodice and pleated skirt dress for everyday too, but trying to fit less volume in that waistband to make it more flattering. I think I'll also try to make a shorter traditional kirtle, with the front lacing, for everyday too! I might have some medieval/16th century adventures soon...

The mocking up process is most DEFINITELY extremely, very helpful to me. Watching others problem-solve their own fit issues in "real-time" gives me a wealth of information (techniques and tips) for how to address and solve my own fit issues, even when those fit issues are different. Thanks for sharing your process with us. :)

The mockup stages are very very interesting... please don't omit them, It helps me so much to see what decisions others make based on the issues they see.

I vote yes for mock-up stages! To me that’s where I learn the most. I’m pretty much the exact person this video was intended for. No dress form. No machine. I loved learning this new drafting technique!!!

I actually bought a box of old linens at a garage sale. Huge box for $5. It had about 10-15 pieces so, Im still using it for mock-ups and I don’t feel bad tossing them after.

I immediately told my dad about that tip. And yes, I walk my dad through all my projects step by step. He has a very rounded education, when he was a kid, the clothes were still bought at a tailor. He's old enough to be my grandfather respectably.

The thing I like about the mock up stage is seeing you find something that isn't working for you and then coming up with ways to fix it. Seeing someone trouble shoot problems is REALLY HELPFUL. Thanks for keeping us beginning sewing people in mind with this video.

i am so glad you showed us to draft mock-ups on our own persons. I have been at the "him and haw" stage for both the L bra and a kirtle for weeks. I do not have a dress form, I dont have more than 3 sq ft of clear space in my apartment (except my bed, which i often make do into my cutting area) so this video is really helpful. We all need shirts that say 'I need more linen.'

If you're in America, I just discovered that Burnley & Trowbridge fair prices for their very good quality linen. Expect $10 shipping and $5 tax. Their women is about $15 a yard 60 inches weft/wide. They also have some very nice wool.

Yes to showing the mock up stage and chatting. Desisions are the hardest part for me, so I like to see other peoples' processes to get new ideas on how to do things when it doesn't go as planned, fitting tips or how other choose between different options.

The only thing my mom ever taught me about sewing was to pre-wash the fabric. And of course not using your fabric scissors on anything other than fabric.

I really like seeing the mockups. As a beginner sewer, it's really helpful to see the not so pretty stages of a project from someone more experienced. It helps me remind myself that it doesn't have to be perfect right away. PS I love you and your content! 💛

I love seeing all the stages of mockups and fitting AND it is so useful that you section your videos! I often have to reference videos with no headings, which means a lot of skimming to find the information I need.

Seeing the mockup stage for at least some of the projects is important. Being able to show that it isn't all "right the first time" and that even commercial patterns have to be tweaked to the individual.

Always show the mock ups!!! It helps so much to see and hear your thought process. We put so much time into making clothes and tips about adjusting to it fits is invaluable!

I always appreciate seeing the ways people do mockups. Maybe have the timestamps closer to the beginning of the description so viewers can navigate different project stages? Or however that is done these days? :)

The mock-up process is definitely one of the most helpful parts of a sewing video for me (also, I really wish I could have seen your finished gores from the wrong-side of the fabric, and to see how you dealt with all the bulk of the french seams back there!)

Seeing you fitting on your own body is wonderful. A dressform is great, but it isn't my shape at all. I think I could actually do this. So helpful to see all the mock-up stages too. Mock-up details are super helpful! It helps to hear how other people identify fit issues and make adjustments. I'm actually wearing one mock up of a pair of shorts right now to see if I actually want to commit and use my good fabric on a pair while working on cutting out a different mock-up. : ) Great video to watch as I work.

I think it's great to see the mock ups because it helps me to see that I am not the only one to keep having the problems and it lets me know how to correct them. I think also that using the gores made it lay better and have a more even swish

I love how that came out. Super swishy❤ Now I want to make myself something like it. I spent the last two days trying to make myself a regency dress based of the Simplicity pattern from American Duchess only to have it not fit properly and as my husband put it look like a maternity dress. Since I'm not trying to get pregnant I am scratching that and looking at a different pattern and seeing what I can salvage from the current dress. Now after seeing this I'm tempted to scrap the whole project and see if I can make something similar with lots of swish and still perfect for the blistering hot summer that is only just beginning.

Love seeing the entire process! Long videos are my favorite, because I sew, knit, or spin while I watch RU-vid and I hate having to stop what I'm doing and try to find a new video, so the longer and more detailed the better :)

LOVE the mockups, rhe real time fixing on the body because thats how we all learn best. It lowers the barrier to starting andits easier start this way, rather than having to know how to convert on the body problems to Flat drafting based on your body type and desires

I personally very much appreciated the mockup section! I related a lot to the part where you were drawing seam lines on yourself because I sort of freehand everything at first lol! Your finished dress turned out so wonderfully hobbity, especially with the cloak :D

Oh, yes. Many times have I had an idea -- and then trying to translate it into real life is a WHOLE different deal. This came out ABSOLUTELY WOW! The whole thing, the blouse, the cape -- GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS!!!!! WOW! Also, yes on the mock-ups. It helps give us an idea about possible problems we might encounter. Very helpful.

THE MOCKUP STAGES ARE BEYOND USEFUL!!! It teaches what issues one might have and ideas of how to fix them. It also gives insight on shortcuts as longer "traditional"methods might be more complicated than some are used to, or you simplify terminology that isnt necessarily common for beginners to understand.

I watched this video to procratinate on finishing my first attempt at a basic waschdirndl. It looks almost identical to this dress. The video answered some of the questions I'm stuck on. Maybe if I put this off another week, I'll magically get a video about inserting cording to finish seams, and also how to attach the weird fabric for cartridge pleating.

And when you wear it the french seams almost look like pleats. I thought they were pleats when I saw the cover picture for the video.

Why is it whenever I watch your channel I have a mighty need to blow all my money? No, seriously I need to find a place to buy affordable linen my local store has it for $22 (£15.50) a yard. I have so many sewing projects to do, time to add another to the list, cause I need more swishy skirts and dresses.
