To cover up the electrical connection, a lot of shunting yards have a little shed for the shunters or drivers to stand in when its pissing it hard with rain and your train is a long way off. A little shed would cover the connection and could be removed for maintenance/repairs.

Im watching this whilst planning my inglenook layout, also my first layout, and im planning on it being modular to connect with a larger layout in the future, my only differences are slightly longer to fit larger locomotives and the curve after the furthest away points on mine is another set of points ( heading towards the head shunt end) on it so i can have an engine shed. But this will need some kind of jump for the power as closed points will cut the power to the engine shed, yours is a beautiful little layout and i hope you dont mind me taking inspiration from it

I had small train set as a child and I'm fairly sure my dad's train set is still in his attic. But I am fascinated by the idea of a T-gauge train set. T-gauge is absolutely tiny, from japan and aimed at the hobbyist with limited space, after seeing your video, I wonder how much of a layout one could do on a similarly sized shelf.

It’s interesting to see what techniques overlap between this and warhammer - the ballast caught my eye for this especially. I could see glueing sand or other ground textures in the same way the ballast was done.

Nice one, you shunter! My partner and I have been quietly collecting bits and gubbins for several years, for our own 'fantasy train layout'. Like you, we don't really have the room for it. The darker green flock for the grass looks nice in my opinion. Gives it a mildly stark feel, like any bit of green next to a train line in the West Midlands might be. It's oddly homely to me :p I honestly wish I had something more insightful to say Wib. I'm not a train person, but seeing you relive a childhood passion has been genuinely heart-warming to watch :D

Nicely done. I built one recently as well, though in N-scale. I found putting the power connection at the extreme left end of the layout, the bridge end on your layout, helps hide it. You also could build a little shed or pile of ties to hide the connection. Of course, you haven't finished as you can always add more details. A car for the operator in the tower, cattle or sheep in the field or some people to populate the are. Cheers!

that is a nice looking siding. Switching or shunting you across the ocean like to say is the heart and blood of railroading. You can run all the large road trains you want, but they dont help anyone until they get switched at an industry.
@madmerlinsart
@madmerlinsart 8 месяцев назад
Rather nice and inspiring video. I think they layout looks good as is, but if you personally want the brighter green, go ahead. For something like a shunting layout, a power track is handy as you can easily disconnect the power source for storage and thus not damage wires, etc. Plus, it can easily be covered over with a small lineside hut. 3:25 I love the "going back to preschool" style of model making. Recently, I made some woods for my Middle-Earth table, and it felt like an episode of Blue Peter. 😅

Neat trick I learned from an armor modeler, you can also get PVA to sink into basing material better by putting isopropyl alcohol on the area first. The important thing is you just want to break the surface tension so the PVA glue sinks into the material rather than congealing on top.

Might be worth checking out nearby model railway clubs until such time as space allows you more than an inglenook puzzle (which is great in itself). Could be the best way to get a feel for where the hobby is and maybe learn some useful skills. If you learn electronics for model railway projects you'll probably find doing things adding leds to warhammer a doddle by comparison.

Peco wired fishplates are the answer to the unsightly power blob. But that means fitting them at track laying, before ballasting and making a hole in the surface for the wire to pass through. Also, some sort of feet on the board bottom wouldn't hurt, makes it easier to pick up.

I remember my older cousin used to have a circle of rails (I'm not sure that's the correct way of saying that but hopefully you get my meaning) mounted on a piece of plywood the size of 2/3 of a standard door. He stored it behind his wardrobe. It was very practical, took up practically no space, and hooking it up for play took like two minutes. Obviously, it had no miniature houses etc - just rails. I was thinking about doing something like that for my old model train. Another idea was to do the same thing but actually putting the ground and miniatures on it - and then storing it on a wall, hanging like a big poster. I think it's perfectly doable. You could even put a plexiglass lid on it so it doesn't gather dust. The obvious downside is that with that thing on a wall everyone who visits would immediately know I'm into miniature trains - but let's be real, I'm also into Big Hairy Spiders, so for most onlookers miniature trains are a big step up. (I'm a bit self-conscious about my various interests like models or LEGO and I've discovered that also having a bunch of hairy spiders works wonders to warm up people to things in my flat that AREN'T spiders. The "Thank god it's not spiders"-effect, if you will.)

Great little layout! I plan on doing something like this in the future, seeing that in our current house I got no space for a layout, unlike in our previous one. Also luckily I have old Märklin locks from my grandfather, and I also bought a lot of stuff when I had the space for it previously, and so I have a DB class V60 switcher lok, which can unhook automatically when I reverse the lock. So no need to manually fiddle with the couplings.

It is very strange seeing my job being someones hobby. I've done this exact puzzle in yards (generally, digging repaired wagons out of a cripple road) The trick, is to do it in the LEAST number of shunts and breaks. We can cheat sometimes because we can put stuff onto the mainline and bring it back into the yard via the same entrance (a short shunt)

there is a more advanced version of an Inglenook which plays around with both wagons and coaches, but that's definitely something that requires a lot more pre-planning to put together, both in terms of how you build rakes and you also need to use coaches that are the same length as a a multiple of the wagons (ie, 2 wagon lengths or 3 wagon lengths). That'd be how you could do a small shunting puzzle that also uses passenger stock.
@bionicgeekgrrl
@bionicgeekgrrl 8 месяцев назад
There's also a variation that introduces a pack of playing cards and the concept of cripple wagons you have to move out. The simple addition of just a fiddle stick would also add more options and not increase the amount needing storage as it will just be a small length of wood.
