Very curious which mask idea you liked the most, let me know! If you have more genius hacks to make masks fit better, easier on the ears, look cute and coordinated, please spill :) stay safe everyone!! and wash your masks ✨ (I have a hook in my house where I collect them, and then toss them all in a bra bag for protection in the washing machine)
First thing I'm ever making with my sewing machine wish me luck 😭 Edit: yall are so nice I will tell you the results when I finish might take a while ☺️
I actually “flipped” the elastic to go from top to top and bottom to bottom (rather than staying on one side from top to bottom) and slip it on over my head. I wear hearing aids AND glasses, so a third thing behind my ears is just not good at all. With the bought masks I quickly realised that they were way too big for me when placing the elastic as intended “behind the ears” but then I figured out several ways of pulling the elastic all the way to the back of my head. 1. Cut elastic in the middle and tie bow (top right to top left and bottom right to bottom left string) 2. Get a heir elastic band and do the loop de loop (I have no idea what one calls it..) it’s kind of the same mechanism as zip ties) 3. When wearing a high pony I’ve also looped the elastic “over” and to the other side of the pony tail, sort of crossing them with the ponytail as placeholders in the middle I’ve also created these with edge-banding that extends longer and have, kind of like you did, tied it into a bow around my pony tail as well. Basically doing the most to help out my poor ears.
I use tshirt strips as straps when making my masks (can be a shoelace, any sort of long tie) and loop it through the mask with the ties on the top, so when its untied it hangs on my neck like a necklace and then i can pull the ties through to tighten it to my face and tie it behind my head stays off my ears completely, the ties stays on my head well when moving around all day and its comfortable, and it can hang on my neck (i fold the nose wire when its on my neck so the mask lays in half on my chest)
One of sewing ladies I'm watching on Instagram has made a fabric rectangle (about 1x5 inches) with buttons on either side, you put that rectangle at the back of your head and hook the elastic onto the buttons. I haven't tried that yet but I'm defo considering it. I've also seen a photo of a nurse sewing buttons onto her fabric headband and hooking her elastic on that.
this has been the best kind of face mask for me to wear! i wear glasses and have about a dozen ear piercings, a mask that goes over the ears can be super uncomfortable
Instead of folding over the edges and tying the elastic in a loop, I fold the layers inward and sandwich the elastic flat between the layers. It helps relieve some stress on the ears, since it isn't pulling downward from being in a loop, and uses less elastic!
I've been making masks for myself and my family, and I've been having a lot of fun finding fabrics. I've made several bandana masks, including a couple that are pink on one side and light blue on the east other... They remind me of the new Harley Quin. I also found some rainbow tie dye-esque bandanas that are making really pretty masks. I made some denim masks for my dad that I lined with red plaid flannel. Both fabrics were in my reclaimed fabric stash.... He really liked them. I figure if i have to wear masks, I might as well have masks that make me happy!
I have tons of old fabric. Some I got from my mom 30+ years ago. I had a small amount of Loony Toon fabric and was able to make 2 masks along with some smiley face fabric from 25+ years ago. I have been using them along with some newer fabric I purchased and have been making masks for employees at work.
I use a bobby pin for a nose wire. It's a bit of a pain to get into shape at first, but then it stays snug on your nose forever. I use a pattern that has a pocket for a filter medium and there you can just topstitch a quarter inch from the top to make a channel for the wire. Saves a bit of time when you're making a lot of them.
Mask is like a cute accessory where I live, not just for safety but a fashion statement 😂. Yesterday I did embroidery on some plain masks I bought. Need to up my mask game otherwise it's a shame among fashionista colleagues.
I've been making reversible masks with 2 different fabrics! I've made one with bees on one side and flowers on the other so I can coordinate without having to make tons of masks!
i just spend last 6h to design the perfect mask fit for me and let me tell u it was WORTH IT, thank-you for motivation and showing easy way to sew it ❤
I've been finding that elastics that go all the way around the back instead of hooking around your ears are SO much comfier! You'd think it'd mess up your hair, but as long as you have the right length, you can just pull your top layer of hair up over it and the elastic blends right in! (tho, it's easiest to just hook it over a scrunchie)
i reeeaally liked the sporty one but the idea of the white one is very smart and practical, though i feel like the blue one you showed at the end would be better because it had much less fabric for the back of the head and this video gives me japanese street fashion vibes:):)
my gramma has been making loads and loads of masks since the beginning of quarantine. Since my grandpa has hearing aids he can't have elastic around his ears, she she has experimented with lots of different kinds of ties and elastics. Even though I used to use disposable around the ear masks all the time, I found that I actually really love masks with elastic that goes around my whole head, theyre so much more comfortable. My favorite mask has soft elastic that I can put around my ears and then pull my hair over it so that its totally invisible, but that bow is so adorable and i want to make 5000 now haha. All of these designs are so cute!
Yes! I'm so stoked for this mask template 💜 A good mask test is trying to blow out a lighter flame while wearing the mask. If you can't blow it out, your mask is pretty effective
Hey what would you say about diy-ing an actually warm and also cute dress or two for the cold months? I hate everything I find, they're either not warm enough or cute enough
Aww you look like a little girl with the 3rd mask- lace bow lol and yes I love the one with the blue matching ribbon to hold the mask and look like a hair bow too
All the mask were fun, pretty and safe to wear which we will need for awhile, I believe. Plus you have patterns for all sizes and for different ages from small kids to men, which I haven't seen from any other people yet. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
love the nose wire. I have been doing this since the get go. I use tin ties because they have two wires and are very firm. You can find them on coffee bags or order them online.
Your eyelet hair bow is super cute! I like how you made it custom to your face, usually I struggle with the face mask that loosen up throughout the day with knit based fabrics. Woven material gets super hot! Hoping that the “winter season” I make cuter mask for myself to style. 🎭
Also I use a shoe lace instead of elastic. You pull it in from the tops and tie it behind your neck. That way it doesn't really rest on your ears at all and you usually don't have to untie it to pull it off of your head.
That’s awesome! You can do it!! Lots of hard work and you can get there! 💛 don’t listen to the haters and do what makes your heart beat 💛 one love ❤️ stay safe
wow same im 14 and ive been sewing since i was 6 (my nan taught me on a machine very young) im doing textiles in school and have decided to go to fashion school when i leave high school (im in australia) yesterday i cloned one of my dresses but altered bits to make it my own design and it turned out so well so keep trying try purchasing a dress form and that will really help for you to see the desired fit :)
This was perfect timing. My mom and I were just making some new masks today and started with the first pattern. Managed to make two to get me by, but the pattern still needs reworking to fix the gaps. The white one with the bow in the back was super cute. Especially when your ears need a break lol
i like to sandwich the elastic between the front and back before i turn it right side out (i’ve figured out by now how much elastic i need so i don’t have to measure every time :))
Yes to decorative masks! Couple of days ago I was thinking of making some Star Trek themed ones and kept wondering how I could add decorative front (which would require some colour blocks) without compromising the shielding properties by adding even more holes in the fabric. Looks like I've got my answer
I love all of these!! Definitely something I’m going to do, my fav was the sport mask!

I made one of the masks from the tutorial you made a few months back, the square ones with pleated fabric. I'm excited to make this one, i feel like your tutorials are the easiest to follow and the results are always good because of that ✨💜
I love the idea of the hair ribbon as an ear saver! Cutest way I've seen to do it so far. I went through the same process to create the perfect mask shape for myself as well, albeit a lot slower since I hand sewed mine. I also decided very early on that I preferred sewing the elastics in rather than creating a tube to thread them through because I found that tube to be too bulky and sticks out weirdly because of all the layers of fabric.
I love the bow especially the blue one, it is so pretty with the ponytail. Could you maybe do the elastics on the side of the mask directly into a scrunchie so that it hurts less?
I am speachless!!! Woooow, first of all I am going to make the same changes, so that the mask is more fitted. And second, how gorgeous ideas for masks, wow Sara Nena DIY
These masks are beautiful! I love the tutorial on how to create a custom fit. As a teacher, I wear surgical masks and change them out several times throughout the day as they do get "moist!" :) Could not breathe and talk with three layers of cotton while teaching but I would definitely wear these masks out grocery shopping. BTW, we are on the hunt for a sewing machine for our Makderspace in our school's Learning Commons. Love the growing interest in sewing among our young adult population!
