A few weeks ago, I set myself a weight loss goal…I made FOUR simple changes and in 5 weeks, lost 7kg.
I didn’t starve myself, I didn’t cut out food groups, and I didn’t jeopardise my performance on the bike.
These four changes have changed my life and I can almost guarantee that they’ll change your’s too.

I keep my weight at 60kg all year round, as an amateur cyclist, I always keep my diary in excel of what I eat for 10 weeks and then delete it. I eat few snacks but one thing that has changed my life is 85% Cocoa Dark Chocolate Bar, I can eat up to 4 pieces a day and they keep my energy and happiness day by day.

I’ve lost about 10kg, similar height, from 105 down to 95kg, and I’ve noticed a massive performance increase on the bike over this time too. The biggest change I’ve made is eating more vegetables, and whilst I have got a little slack with my cravings, I’ve kept off the initial weight loss, and remain hopeful for more weight loss with another surge of enthusiasm and encouragement when it happens. I find the biggest thing that helped me other than the vegetables was wanting the change. If you don’t want it, you’re going to get a few weeks in and give up. I did want it, but I’m not forcing myself to stick religiously to it. I’m happy with where I am now, and knowing I can keep what I lost off. So yeah, vegetables and wanting the change is my big 2.

Great video... I'm 192cm, and lost 15kg since I really started to take cycling more seriously last year. I was 103kg and am now around 87kg, but I seem to have plateaued and been stuck here for months.... Hope to be down to nearer 80 for the start of the season next year, following this kind of plan... no more of them sneaky teatime crumpet like I just ate...

great vid, Jack! 110kg, holy shit....When I need to shed a few pounds (wasn't an issue at all until I hit 50), I rely on 2 things: 1. Using a kcal tracking app as you said. 2. staying 300-500 kcal below what my Garmin Tactix says I metabolised on that day. So sometimes I would be a little hungry or miserable, having reached my daily limit, but then after a ride or gym session, my metabolised kcal shot up, and I could feed my face 🤐. Days with no training were always harder to do than days with. And It's important for most to realise that being in a caloric deficit has serious consequences for your recovery. I would go so far to say that you should just train for maintenance rather than "shooting your bolt" for little or no adaptations during a weight loss phase

I think the most important take away here is knowing how many calories are in various things just by instinct, and you get that by going through the mundane logging process. Not just that, but knowing yourself and your habits. For example, I know if I have one beer, I'll end up having 4 or 5 beers. And that's fine, as long as I know that.. knowing that I can just do that once a week rather than 3 times a week - big difference.

Good plan Jack. I'm doing much of the same, but I'm also doing intermittent fasting, eating all my food in a 5 hour window each day. I'm not as active as you, so I properly need a lot less calories than you do, so for me that has helped keeping calories in control. And no, I'm not hungry, your body adapts to fatburning and love you for it :)

Your thyroid is going to get smashed mate. Im a weight loss coach to many WT riders. Test your TSH. Bet it is higher now. Higher TSH means ripe for fat storage.
@michaellane1316
@michaellane1316 8 месяцев назад
Agree, the body adapts to fasting and with a certain amount of time, the hunger goes away. This is when the body starts to learn the process of adaptation and thus the organs for quantifying the nutrients for better use. Eating the needed amounts with proper timing will induce better results and redirect fat stores so the carb, fat and protein will be better utilized when needed. We see folks in all walks of life eating constantly. When I tell them how little I eat they just laugh. The truth is, our bodies do not require much to keep systems functional. Like any kind of training for a sport, life, keeping the basics fundamentally sound will always be the foundation for success.

I lost 10kg doing similar. Weighing food is an absolute must. My fitness pal is a great app for tracking food as can just scan the barcode. I'm racing cyclo-cross at the moment, top 20 most races. The top 5% in our races are lean , the rest of us are carrying a few kg extra, no way are us slightly overweight riders going to break into the top 5% ... 45 minutes riding round a muddy field with 5 extra kg on the belly ... Even if you put out a lot of watts it's a serious handicap to getting results. Some cycling disciplines weight is less of an issue eg flat time trials but the majority of events favour being lean. The food diary is working for me. Shocked at how much I was eating. Using a cheap online calculator and diary is so far losing me 1lb a week. Good video. Cheers.

very good, great result, if you're an active athlete a shake/smoothie using sis rego or similar should be added either side of a workout, have you heard of the 'sleep low protocol'? basically creating a glycogen deficit before/during sleep - worked for me. Your w/kg would have taken a jump no extra power required = win, finally hopefully you removed alcohol from your diet next to junk food that's a big one. Timing of weight-loss; losing weight and training to output big training hours won't end well.

Very good tips. This approach to eating is quite similar to what Matt Fitzgerald recommends in his "The Endurance Diet". Where you differ is measuring the portion sizes, which is definitely quite intriguing and perhaps something I should try again. I'm quite often indulging in the unmeasured "25" grams hand of nuts. I must say that 7 kilos in 5 weeks seems like a lot to loose in such a short time though. That's equivalent to slightly over 50.000 kcal of body fat burned, which would indicate a daily caloric deficiency of ~1500 kcal. In my days as a lightweight rower, we were advised to maintain at most a weight loss of 0.5 kilos per week or about ~600 kcal average daily deficiency. We would generally get back to racing weight in between january and march. The times I ended up loosing weight more quickly, it definitely impaired my recovery from strength training and my performance during high intensity sessions. Of course, the 1500 kcal deficiency assumes that you only burned fat and no muscle or other tissue whatsoever, and that you can count calories in such a way. Still great advice, but I personally would advise people to take the weight loss a bit slower
@GTE_Channel
@GTE_Channel 9 месяцев назад
I feel this is relatively more weight loss due to water loss than fat. There is no way to lose that much fat in such short time while eating slight below maintenance. Cutting down junk carbs that hold on to water does wonders
@craigsmith5134
@craigsmith5134 9 месяцев назад
@@GTE_Channel It's perfectly possible depending on how much he trains. I'm very far from a professional and can burn 800 calories an hour at an medium effort. Ride 2 hours a day at endurance pace where your body is using mostly fat for energy that's 1600 calories a day. Pair that with a calorie deficit you can drop tons of weight very quickly. Just don't expect to do a bunch of high effort max work while doing this.

Definately some water weight, but id say perhaps a ratio of 30% water weight, 70% fat loss. Close to zero muscle catabolised which is the main thing. Power has remained constant, yet watts per kg is elevated. Stoked!

@@jackultracyclistofficial what you say is tough but doable for sure. Without the help of a nutritionist I went from 105kg down to 85kg in a year. Sometimes dropping 2kg a week. All the time weight lifting and cycling a ton. I got faster and stronger. The last 5kg down to 80kg were tough. Took actual planning and work to drop but still did it in a month and maintained strength. I found its important to eat at the right time to maintain energy for your workouts. Eat before and during cycling and cut the rest of the day.

back of the envelope calculation suggests 1500 kcal average daily deficiency. This assumes that he only burned fat though and no muscle, which is unlikely if you are in such a catabolic state. 1 kg of body mass equates to about 7800 kcal. So 7 kg equates to roughly 54 000 kcal. 35 days total, so 54 000/35 gives a bit over 1500 kcal average daily deficiency. Burning muscle yields less energy per kg so it will probably be a bit lower than 1500. Of course this is a back of the envelope calculation, but you can't accurately measure your exact energy expenditure over a full 5 weeks anyways so you will always have a ballpark number for these things.

More expensive than they were, 200%, but compared with the alternatives, they’re still super affordable, at least here in Spain at the local market. Prices for EVERYTHING at the moment are sky high though right? 😢😢

Really stupid question. 1. Vegetables. You can eat how much you want, no restrictions. 2. You have to be very specific with portion sizes. To me, those are mutually exclusive.
@jackultracyclistofficial

Haha, with vegetables, you can eat as much as you want, but for everything else, you need to watch the portions 👌🏽

@@jackultracyclistofficial - Thanks :) Have lost some 35 kg by eating less, and went up 10 again, and are stumbled over this "nutrient dense food" approach, when your video popped up. Goal not as much to lose weight, as to eat well, eat right and be able to take full advantage of the training.

Congratulations! However achieving optimal weight is much easier. You should switch to the whole food plant based diet. We shouldn't add or take anything from plants. Animal protein is the worst thing in the long run (arteriosclerosis) but for example plant based oil is dangerous as well (diabetes).
