Next thing ya know Andy will be producing an epic full length feature film with adventures in the desert, hunting minerals and clay in mysterious and breathtaking landscapes, building stealth fires at dawn, battling the elements and Javalinas to bring these treasures to us and then taking a nap under a tree. :)

@@AncientPottery Please accept this History Nugget with the positive intentions it's being offered with. History is one of my Degrees and remains a Passion that borders on Obsession, I continue to be a Student of History, an avid Researcher. The "carpenter" profession assignment to Joseph actually came from a misinterpreted translation of the History/Texts that were being translated from Greek to Old English in the Middle Ages. We must remember that the KJV is King James VERSION. What Joseph actually was is very likely more akin to an Ancient Alchemist and/or Metallurgist" Alchemists were the early Science/Chemistry and Ancient Knowledge keepers. Spiritual was more a value held equal or greater than the Physical. Unlike the Academics influenced by their "19th Century Theory based Paradigm and Linear Timeline" and later 20th Century application of "Must have Matter to be Accepted, Attitude" that came to prevail and get us off the more accurate road of Explorations and Discoveries that were intended to be guided by the "Standards of Science and Research" ... There are just a number, large number, of current ideas, accepted as facts, based on inaccurate transitions, interpretations, and our attempts to understand History and Ancient History life and experiences, from our Modern Mind's ideas and perspectives. There's been a great deal of "Influencers" along the way: Roman Emperor's, Fundamentalist Popes and Clergy Guys, generally the succession of varies Personalities all desiring Controlling the Masses for their Power and Status. one thing that hasn't changed much is "the Human "Ego Mind, aka Lower Mind", the associated traits and behaviors. Regardless of Fox News's fostering the idea that anyone who claims a potential conspiracy is "a Tin Foil Hat Guy", and the associated presumption that ("there doesn't exist and behaviors of Conspiring for any gain"). I would question that perspective as having had a misguided influence. lol Love you videos! Beth Bartlett Sociologist/Behavioralist and Historian 21st Century coming to terms with the very real emotional Cognitive Dissonance associated with "Awakening to greater Reality Facts" (in both directions: those whom establish beliefs system on Religion and those whom did based on 20th Century Mainstream Academia's Paradigm" both being influenced by other than facts. As the greater facts emerge, both will bequite surprised, but it is far more Positive and Desirable. Possibly the larger cause of pain may be dealing with the realization that they were simply "wrong", and that requires the Higher Mind to experience without ... reactions. Our Humaness is loveable all the same, and Harmony is found "in the middle".

the red was commonly behind a lot of old gold leafing because it was supposed to like lend an extra little warmth to the gold after you burnish it. I'm not a historian nor do I really know Indiana Jones trivia but I think this prop was designed to be originally a plain clay cup that when the knights of the round found it they painted it red and had it gilded with the processes common in medieval England. kinda neat attention to detail if I'm right

Wow, Andy! you really nailed it! When you're the artist, it's hard not to see where you need to improve! When you're the audience, it looks perfect! From what I can see, these are all wonderful. Love the intro! Such a great video! Thanks for the Indiana Jones theme. I could honestly say Indiana Jones had inspired me to search for relics! Found a few in my day and had a lot of fun and adventure! Now I'm too old, But I still search anyway! I leave all the relics where they are, but I carry them in my mind!

Very cool! Very nice goblets that look just as they should. Considering real grail would have had gold added later as the one JESUS used would not have had gold on it when he used it. Was wandering if same method would be used if instead of base for cup it was on side as handle? I had one I bought like that that handle was hollow & I believe it was what helped handle stay cool when I warmed soup in it. Of course it had a flat bottom that way thick but it still had that bowl look & feel.
@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery 2 года назад
Thanks. That would be a fun project, I have seen cups like that. It would be more difficult because the bowl would be weak standing on its side while the bowl is strong standing upside down as it was for this project.

@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery 2 года назад
I'm open to ideas but it needs to be something that inspires me. Much of the plains woodland tradition doesn't really do it for me. I have been trying to do more videos that are not specific to the Southwest though. Like how to find and process wild clay, how to seal earthenware, making brick kilns, etc.

Thanks for another nice video Andy! Best line of the vid: " Ya scrape off da high spots and fill in da low spots". Sounds rather Confucian, but in keeping with the theme, it appears Moses must have had similar sentiments.😁 Hey, is that ocher you're using, a pure limeonite? Thanks again, from Scholle NM! 👍
@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery 2 года назад
Thanks for the wisdom Jeff, there are many things the prophets of old can teach us about pottery and vise versa. I like "Does not the potter have authority over the clay?" from the Bible (which is more than I can say for the holy grail). The yellow material is a bit strange. It feels like clay, it is sticky and will form a crackled texture when dry, so you would think it was clay. However if it is just painted onto a pot and fired it will rub off, it doesn't harden in the fire, so I call it ochre. Now whether it is pure limonite or something else, I don't know, but it does fire a nice red color.
@jeffreyconnell8410
@jeffreyconnell8410 2 года назад
@@AncientPotteryHey that's not my wisdom. You say that in the video! You are the Sage of the day! Yeah, limonite can decompose into a kinda mudstone, and is often found in close proximity. I love the range of colors it fires. It seems more sensitive to temp and atmosphere in my experience.

Most gold size will work, it depends on how porous the surface is as to how it will stick. Real leaf can be applied with just pressure and / or heat. Burnishing the leaf after application will help keep loose edges down

there is one small nitpick with your grail, in the movie, the bottom of the grail should be sealed off, but yours is open. It is still a great imitation, nonetheless!
@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery Год назад
I don’t believe an authentically made “cup of a carpenter” would have been. Ceramics are not made with big solid chunks so if it were solid it would have been filled afterward. But with what and why. Yes I see the prop was closed at the bottom but that was prop-makers inexperienced in how things were made long ago IMO.
