It's amazing the level that you guys got to in such short period of time. It would be awesome if you could make a video elaborating on the way you practice on and off the mat. As someone who did bjj for a few months and feels like he knows basically nothing, it would be great a help.
I think age has a lot to do with it. I think kids who get into around 19-21 accel faster than any other demographic. They're physically built enough to be formidable, and their brains are malleable enough to still learn quickly.
Like the above commenter said, young athletic dudes learn pretty quick, especially if they’re putting in crazy hours and watching videos in their spare time. Also he had some experience from rolling in a jiu Jitsu club so he wasn’t starting with 0 Jitsu experience.
@@Cornbreadddd For sure it has to do with it.. but still, I'm sure that their learning method is very systematic in order to get to this level so quickly. I can testify as a 24 year old in a great shape, that the bjj gyms I've been to did not provide any systematic method or enough guidance for beginners to in order to advance quickly or even be good in 1 aspect of the game (pin escapes, maintaining guard etc..). One class we learn arm bar and the next we learn way more advanced moves that no chance I can use while rolling. So given that the gyms around me are not as good as 10th planet (and not even close), I'm tying to figure out how could I get better quickly and effectively on my own.
It's amazing what kind of friendship you two have. A lot of people in this world walk in life without having a friend like you. One of a kind. Kudos to you for training him and congrats to Nick

I literally trained 8 newbies for an hour for four Saturdays (4 hours of training). 8 got gold and with 1 getting silver and 1 bronze. At the beginner level it's all about what you teach.
Absolutely fantastic from both of you. Nick, what a student and athlete. Obviously a bright and gifted kid, helped by a tremendous teacher. Great work, very inspirational.
Impressive! Very smart strategy. This shows how focusing intensely on a few principles is a stronger starting point, than trying to master the whole game from the beginning.
@@montanaroathletics4480 I was listening to a podcast with John Danaher and somebody said that in higher levels of competition, its very rare to tap out someone with a straight ankle because competitors are used to this pain. This is one of my first tournaments competing in BJJ and I didn't want to tap to something that I heard wasn't dangerous.

Listening to coaches is the only real consistent path to being a champion, in almost anything. Innovation and listening/following real game plan. The two cornerstones.
This feels like a video game with abilities, where you only upgraded kick, and left every other upgrade untouched, where you can just spam and win every fight.

Nick was already a grappler, so the only thing to do with him was conditioning and flo-grappling. And learned the best thing to do when in combat, DO NOT PANIC! I hope Nick takes up Catch more wrestling as well.
Are you a Gordon/DDS fan? See a lot of similarities, I personally use a butterfly/slx game. I’m a new blue belt and have been diving deep into leg locks. Funny enough 411 has served as great place to pass from.
It was super smart to focus a game plan and is way better. I hated in the beginning when so many classes felt almost entirely detached from the last class, and the one before that, and this place only had class twice a week. Way easier to understand when things are focused and tailored to what you seem to be understanding. I also think though that this would have been much harder in a gi tournament. So if you've been doing bjj for 30 days in gi and still get caught in a bow and arrow and don't know what happened, its ok.
When Nick's second opponent has the guillotine lock and Nick was on the opposite side of his body, he could've locked up the Von Flue Choke. It looked like he already had the grip and the arm trapped, just needed to drive his shoulder into his opponent's throat. 6:55
Nick and I started at the same time, but I was a white belt, beating black belts, and brown belts. Nick has never wrestled before, which means I have and why I'm so good. Thanks for watching, I've done hours and hours of training before saying I was a white belt... Cheers. .... Bruh... JESUS... State your background .. for the love of GOD.
Coming back from my 2nd day of class and just got my ass kicked. Tried to do everything we drilled for hours and I couldn’t do a single thing I thought I had down well. But when we roll I couldn’t do anything. Very discouraging and kills my confidence. But it shows me if I keep going I can be the one eventually kicking ass.

So one month of strategic training but how much before? Like complete white into blue (ish) training? If it's only one month total, you're the new John danaher. But legit for my own sake to try this, how much training before your month with him?
I'd love to do that. I train at 10th Planet NYC in Manhattan, New York. If that's nearby you can contact me at joshuaerichardsiv@gmail.com or on Instagram @Joshrichiv
