SPOS is not new, back in the day here in the UK the same malady was called 'Escortitis', the symptoms were an incessant urge to modify the engine and update the suspension, many sufferers lost all their money when the illness struck hard and they often suffered from divorce. The sickness is highly contagious and those looking to avoid infection should watch out for one of the main indicators that infected folk are near by looking out for black tyre marks on the road and the roaring of a small engine being revved hard, The best medical advice is to get out of the infection area as soon as possible to avoid transmission, if an infected car unexpectedly comes into sight displaying indications that the driver is infected (such as wide wheels, modified bodywork, loud exhaust etc) the advice is to close ones eyes and put fingers in ones ears and wait quietly for the danger to pass..

19:09 irony for me is that I had a 1999 V8 Taurus SHO that had a slashed gas tank when I hit metal scrap that fell off a truck in front of me at 70 MPH. I was on my way to have the cams welded to avoid the known issue when this occurred. I JB Weld the gas tank at the gas station. That temporary fix turned out to be a permanent fix. LONG LIVE JB WELD! The car lasted until 2015. It went to over 180K with no major mechanical problems. I had sold it to my much younger brother who owned it for years until his girlfriend wrecked it.

Based on previous SHO experience with this generation, I think you have a high pressure fuel issue. Last one I had, had a failed high pressure fuel pump that killed the fuel injectors. It will be fine at higher rpm but will be very sluggish from a dig. You may want to consider the replacement of the HPFP and injectors. Should help the sluggishness off the line. The pump is pretty easy to replace and injectors arent too bad. I could help you out with it if needed. I work in the area. (I was a master certified ford mechanic for 10 years)
@theemasher777
@theemasher777 3 месяца назад
I am certainly not a technician but working in parts for Ford the last 6 years of my life you see some trends in this issue. The high pressure pump and injectors even for trucks with the 5.0 and 3.5 are common items to check when having a long crank or fuel pressure issue. Sometimes it's just the driver module. Definitely worth a look for a car with 150k miles.

I had a 2015 PP SHO before I got my E55, it was full bolt on, down pipes and a 3bar tune from Livernois that was good to about 450hp AWD. It was SCARY FAST and ate up highway at an alarming rate and still got 24+mpg. I only got rid of it because the warranty ended and it started to show signs of the water pump/ timing chain issue yours already had repaired. It was black on black, lowered with bronze TSW wheels and with the Borla exhaust, you could tell it wasn’t your average Taurus. Even the police usually just gave me thumbs up, even if I was going over the limit and a couple I got to know in my area said they wished their cruisers looked that good. It handled pretty well for a big girl but the couches you sit on limit your cornering ability unless you brace yourself on the door, lol. I just paid off the E55 and she needs some suspension work so it will stop eating the inside of the rear tires and I need to do the rest of the mods I have sitting in a closet so it’s coming off of the road for the summer. I’m going next week to visit my parents for Mother’s Day and picking up my 2001 E430 that’s been sitting for 3 months and driving it 1500 miles back across the country back home. I’m doing my own LegitRoadKill trip! Wish me luck! 😂

Ford's internal water pump design on these is horrible along with any other manufacturers who decide an internal water pump is the answer. Ffs do a remote pump and be done with it manufacturers! I've got a Gen 5 Taurus with the 3.5 and the same BS internal water pump so I'm using a digital coolant gauge to monitor temps because that weep hole doesn't always tell you when there's an issue. It's my work car so if it dies I'll sell it for whatever I get for it and find something that doesn't suck as horribly. It's a limited awd too. Also I would never touch an ecoboost Taurus. If people who own them like them, more power to them. It's got miniscule interior space for the boat of a car external dimension wise and after owning 9 different Fords including my current work car, I'm done with em. I'll stick with Japanese cars, older muscle cars, etc. Nothing new by any American manufacturers.

I recently got rid of my 16 SHO. I had a water meth kit with a noise maker delete intake pipe and it was so much fun. I've seen some comments saying you've had the timing and water pump already taken care of, watch out for the turbos too. I had a rear turbo blow along with a dripping water pump and it was just time to let it go. Super fun under rated car though.

Nice finally seeing someone actually work on these PTUs. I can’t tell you the countless of times I’ve seen where a thick black metallic paste just comes out of it. You tell the customer they should at least do a fluid change but they don’t care.
@jaymorrison2419
@jaymorrison2419 4 месяца назад
The problem is two fold, and fords fault. The PTU fluid is classified as 'Lifetime' which means there is NO normal maintenance schedule for it, which also means you dont get a reminder from your normal care places. It also means a dealer wont do it even if you ask. AND, if you have the non-performance package version (the PP has a cooler line going to the radiator, a design is shares with the PPV), there isn't a drain on the PTU, so the only way to flush it is to vacuum extract, so its not even something you can easily do at home.
@thompsongjr

Ford will not change the PTU fluid. It is a lifetime fluid, and they will refuse the service when asked. You have to go to an independent shop.
@jzuelch

@@jaymorrison2419 Drill a drain like he did. I did that years ago on a Freestyle I used to own. Very frustrating that 2 decades plus of using PTU that Ford still claims lifetime fluid on a qt of gear oil.

Couple great items to add as far as upgrades goes: EPP Air Intake is a well worthy upgrade as it separates the piping to the two turbos which will result in less waste gate duty cycles and sound cool. EPP hot pipes: as you increase boost the stock hot pipes can result in boost leaks (especially the noise maker) and you can order them in any color and being aluminum might help with some heat dissipation XDI high pressure fuel pump And when 400 AWHP gets boring Gearheads gen 3 turbo upgrade will blow you away.

It's so odd, that this is one of my favorite cars of all time. It's not nearly as flashy or showy as some of the sports cars or performance trucks/SUVs I like but this car is at the top of the short list. Excellent job doing maintenance and modifying this car. This is one sick sleeper/grocery getter.

My daily is a 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro4X with 25K miles. It’s got plenty of power, drives/handles well, has all the tech I need, and the seats are very comfortable! I bought it because of the 3.8 n/a motor (no turbos), hydraulic steering (I like a heavier feel), and it was the only midsize truck that I like the design of.

Hey Alex. I daily drive a 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL550 4matic, 132,000 miles. I never thought I'd own a Mercedes but since watching you and all of your Mercedes videos, you gave me the courage to get one. Before this I had a 2013 BMW X5 xdrive 50i which you know the issues they were plagued with. Not that Mercedes are worry-free. But watching your videos literally made me more comfortable purchasing my first Mercedes. And it's an awesome machine. So thanks and I look forward to your videos every weekend.

Cup Cake Trays are reusable solid metal trays that you drop cup cake wrappers into and the wrappers make the ridges on the sides of the cup cakes, muffin tins have the ridges formed in them because muffins don't get wrappers (traditionally).

The PTU fails mostly because of galling of the fluid. That causes bearing failure. The heat from the downpipes literally cooks the fluid. Leaks don't help either. Also the ptu holds 18 Oz of fluid. The best fluids we have found have been the Amsoil and the Redline Lightweight Shockproof.

Not sure if you still have the car, but once you start tuning these 3.5L engines you will need to replace the OEM plastic blow offs. I had mine on a basic tune for most of its life, and the factory BOV cracked from the extra boost after 6 months. I installed a turbo smart one and it sounded even better! I thought these 3.5’s were fast before I started driving BMW’s lol.

For what it's worth the Taurus SHO is a very quick vehicle especially with a tune. It's not a BMW or Audi but big thumbs up in my book. I love my SHO, I do supersize a lot of cars I race from stop light to stop light. Just my option.

FYI, you installed the exhaust tips inbound too far. When the car is at idle the hot air from the exhaust will accumulate behind the bumper cover and deform it. The tip end should be flush with the bumper surface.

Awesome video! I love that it's an hour long too. Currently I own a 2015 silver SHO that I bought in 2018 with 29k milage and named her Sheila. I've done nothing to her regarding modifications other than paint and body work. She's never broken down or left me stranded. Fast forward to today, Sheila has over 107k, and all was going good until I had to step on her to pass some fuck-stick while getting on the freeway. I heard a loud noise which I couldn't make out due to the stereo being up loud but I did feel a vibration and the check engine light came on so I immediately pulled off the freeway and all the sudden the vibration went away as well as the check engine light. It was like she repaired herself within seconds which I have never seen that before. I eased her home without any further issues. I drive her the very next day and all is normal. Then a few days later I had to step on her again and the exact same noise/vibration returned and the check engine light came back on as well (it was blinking btw). This time I kicked her into neutral and came to a complete stop at the red light. I shifted into park then back into drive and everything went away again. I've been driving her for about 3 months without any further issues but I have yet to step on her again. Anyone know what this could be? I'm afraid something bad is going to happen any moment and don't know what to do. Thanks

167,517 miles is when the xfer case blows up. Fitting hoses that don't want to go on. A little dishwasher soap as lubricant works wonder. You can also microwave hoses just a bit to heat them or use a heat gun - good for motorcycle head/carb boots. Dishwasher soap to put on motorcycle hand grips works well. And when soap dries- they are on nice and tight. Looks like quite the project. I do enjoy your vids. Keep up the good work. The odd repairs I do I document like how to training vids.

Customer came in with 2019 Explorer. Said it smelled like propane. Lifted it and found ptu grenade, exposed gears, fresh new inspection window, ripped the mounting ears off transmission case, and torn the passenger axle center bearing mounts out of the block. Insurance payed for a new trans, new ptu, new axles, new rear prop shafts, and a short block. Was a 38 or 39hr RO for me. Customer traded it in day I finished fixing it on a new blazer for some reason. I purchased the basically new Explorer. And it wasn't expensive since insurance ate the repair bill.

Must be nice to get a tune from Gearhead that's not absolute garbage. Ill never run or recommend them to anyone i know. My 15 SHO was constantly SLAMMING into gear and jerk the engine like crazy. I got referred to as "ninja forms revision" and no effort whatsoever was made to fix their junk tune file they sent me. Car drives good stock and i get 23 mpg combined, tuned Id be lucky to see 17 mpg and the car bordered on undrivable.

My SHO is a 2011 is highly modified, will run 12.3s in a quarter mile. In our old SHO form we realize when high performance driving this car you got to change that PTU oil every 60,000 mi or you going to blow it up about every 70k to 80,000 MI. Minds blew up at 68k they put a new one in. At 130 k I had problems with the transmission and I had them put your oil drain in and it's only got 144k now and I had no more problems out of it. At 156 k never having the oil changed. And it's making that whining noise and going chuck chuck you riding around on double borrowed time. I don't think you're going to even make 160 k when you start riding it hard it's (PTU) going to blow up on you. Oh if you add methanol injection to it you can get it down to about 4 seconds maybe 3.9 sec 0 to 60😊 check out Shoman04 on RU-vid.
@44hawk28
@44hawk28 2 месяца назад
Drive it a little bit spirited and I expect that PTU to grenade in about 12,000 Mi so you're looking at about 167,432. However, you might have once you start putting the fresh lubricant in it, it may actually survive. But it's going to run warm with less than a quart of lubrication in it. As for what I'm seeing you put on I expect about a 4.8 possibly a 4.6 with a little bit of tweaking after you get everything sorted out. Running it a couple of points lean is not a bad idea because it will allow you Fuel mileage, and as long as you have a lower temperature thermostat and a good cooling system, it will handle a couple of points lean anyway, there's nothing wrong with saving fuel
