I finally got around to making some hex key dart points for my Simon Whitlock darts. All in all it was fairly easy to do. The key ingredient was 3/32 hex key points. Those work best. Enjoy the video

Put the allen keys after cutting to length in the dremel and use a hand held file for a smooth point finish. You can get a drill chuck attachment to replace the standard collets in the end of the dremel tool, making this job easy.

The old Whitlock darts used to be my match dart. I threw pretty well with them. After a couple years the grip was pretty much gone and they would randomly slide out of my fingers when I released. This was also around the same time dartitis started. I've changed things up a little since then. The new mission sniper darts give a similar feel in my opinion.

I have two sets of Winmau Whitlock's and use them as my match darts (I've sent to you my rainbow set with Gurney's golden flights :)). For me they are very comfortable, because I grip them like Simon - thumb on the scallop and three fingers on the barrel and the point. Kinda weird, but works for me ;)

Simon Whitlock is an awesome player who doesn’t create any drama (whilst playing) he just gets on with it. Although his hex (Allen key) points have been a topic of contention. He’s also a little quirky!! Love how he came up with doing this. You did a good job recreating these, would like to see do similar videos. Possible idea 💡 Make flights out of different materials Or Cut down flights to see how it changes their performance. Great stuff WWD 👍🏻

I'm here after seeing the ruling that bans aggressive points in 2024. I'm actually using those Whitlock darts right now but I never thought about making my own points, how stable are they? When you move them around in there it looks like they'd stick to the board when pulling the dart out but then they don't. My grip on those darts is thumb and pointer on the back of the barrel, before the shaft while putting my middle finger on the dart for stability. I am not consistent but I'm also an amateur, so I'm not going to blame the darts as it would be like that with any set of darts and I got several others to confirm that lol

I would strongly recommend some specialty points that eliminate the lip on the front of the dart. You'll be amazed at the difference it makes.

awesome vid! this one is also sitting on my list to try out! i did make my own points from diamond viles but that one was pretty easy to do.

I saw those on Amazon. Cut them and install them into the darts is about it right?

@@WorldwideDarts yeah thats all just cut them and install them, almost all of mine are around 40mm thats were the diamond coating on the vile stops. Some seem to be a bit thinner than other so to prevent them from falling out i used a bit of papertowel, put it around the point and install it that way. Or you can go for the easier option and a drop of superglue will do the trick

I have a set of whitlock barrels (the gold and black ones) i do have kind of a weird grip with my thumb on the scallop and my middlefinger a bit in front, my ring finger under the point and the indexfinger pointing straight up at the back of the barrel.

I'm currently using the Target Fire Edge points and they are flat at the end. It's nice to rest my finger on a flat surface rather than round. But the Fire Edge are only flat on 1/3 of the point, so I want to try something like this.

I actly rember u getinn thos darts and sayin u were making the points. 😄.I use thos darts with a short cosmo stem and standard cosmo flight..thy are hard to figure out at frist but very comfortable after a lil time of practise and getin your grip... Great vido also well worth the wate 10/10 😃 😊☘

Haha that was a hot minute ago. Got to be a couple years I think? I was looking in my desk for a white set of stems to pair up with a set of Darts Clearance darts and saw the Whitlock darts. Figured I'd kill a couple hours making points 😂

Yeah, probably in a couple months or so. I hate reviewing really nice or popular darts in the summertime because not many people are watching dart videos this time of the year. But once Nov-Dec rolls around I'll be breaking out the nice darts.

Great video! Using hex keys for dart points is something I would literally never do personally. I’m more than happy with black points that hold into the board excellent. Also with all the different point designs available there seems to be plenty to choose from. I am surprised you and no damage to your dartboard.

All those terms are interchangeable, I worked as a aircraft mechanic for years and no matter which name someone used, I knew exactly what they were talking about. Anyone who insists that you use an “official” term for them is on a hopeless crusade. The points look fierce, did you notice any improvement as far as less bounce-outs? I don’t blame Simon for going medieval on those Blade 6 boards though. Good for him.

Well I got no bounce outs which is the same as what normally happens lol. They weigh slightly more due to them being longer than a normal point but all in all they worked just like any other set of points.

You could've rounded them by using a simple electric drill. Just tighten the hexes into it and while you spinning them just push it gently to a sandpaper that is glued to some harder surface or a metal grinder or an angle grinder thats spinning.

I don't think the allen key (as we call them in the UK) points were ever really an issue for damaging boards. It was his later versions that were serious board wreckers where the issues were

You're correct. It was those diamond coated points he used that absolutely killed the boards. I think the Darts Ref did a video on them a while back.

I tried using the 19g Skypros as my match darts for a bit. I couldn't find any consistency with them. Either I was throwing the best stuff I've ever thrown or throwing absolute trash. No middle ground at all. Weird.

Interesting I'm using old Simon darts and I'm a blow amateur player can hot a few trebles I get a lot more good first dart 81s than I do tons.

I see no logical reason for a hex point. The surface area (e.g. perimeter) of a hexagon will always be smaller vs. a circle of the same diameter, thus less material going into the board and gripping the sisal... Fun little kill some time on the weekend experiment, though. :)

Simon used them for quite a while. Seems gimmicky to me as I honestly didn't notice any difference at all. If I gripped on the point I'd be able to feel the ridges of the allen key but that's about if.

@@WorldwideDarts Next weekend's project: get Allen wrenches that are, let's say, 4mm diameter (vs. 2.3mm for a standard point), grind the last 5mm down to 2.3mm to fit in the dart, then round the part that butts up to the dart - a d.i.y. Trident point. Measure the diameter of the dart where the point meets, get the appropriately-sized Allen wrench(s), and go from there. :)
