I think Threepio might secretly be that murderous protocal droid Vader made in the comics(can't remember his name) whose replaced the real threepio after he was cut in half last time. Anakin probaly pulled him from the world between worlds by accident, thinking it was Threepio when it was just the droid covered in gold paint during the Vader Down comic.
