When I play Super Mario Kart compared to its sequels, it feels like a beta version of Mario Kart, very basic tracks, single use item panels, set AI positions for every character, AI only being able to use 1 item, the stupidity of the red shells, etc
This was cool seeing because I have always been into older consoles and I have a SNES with Super Mario Kart that I play often so seeing it in 3d was cool
You need to add a lap counter for each ai in order to do ranks based on checkpoints, otherwise 8th place driver closest to finish line can get 2nd. Also, lightning allows drivers to be ran over and flattened. Also, also, ai karts have unique specials like Peach's mushrooms that shrink you if you run over it (all ai's magically jump over it and never hit them btw)
Ai having unique specials was a lame feature and they couldn’t use the items like a regular player. Ai and player items should be equal, but the players and ai probabilities are different in Mario kart games.
The original is 3D. It goes forward, backward, left, right, and jumps up and down.

Yes, but... Technically... it's still 2D. It uses 2D sprites, the track is flat, the jumping is just programmed to make it look like jumping. It uses SNES's Mode 7 to render a big ass textures (or multiple smaller ones?) on a 3D, flat plane.
@ I hear what you're sayung, but it is 3D though. Even the 3D you describe, at the model level, is still all done and created on a flat or monitor screen. None of this stuff is really 3D in that respect.
@ If you create an experience whereby you can perceive motion in three dimensions, it's called 3D. It doesn't matter how you achieve it. It's always going to be an illusion. Everything you see on a computer screen could be said to be "technically 2D" if you were so inclined.
Amazing work, looks very legit! I want to know how did you decide to implement the AI rubber banding? I remember the original game had crazy rubber banding for the rival. Even if hit by a shell and dropping to like 5th position, they would in a matter of seconds manage to get back to 1st or 2nd position. It always annoyed me haha
Thanks! Well i don’t have that behavior in my solution exactly. Just different speed on the characters and some times they choose the best possible route to get ahead
Great video editing and great project, but you should edit your video to add a 1 or 2 minutes example of the finish product, maybe an entire race. That would also bring the video above the 10min mark which would greatly increase your ranking by the YT algorithm.
This was awesome!! I love your videos like this. Could you one day maybe do the rest of the tracks as well and recreated the whole game? You already have most of the things done, like the function, UI, and AI, as well as most of the character models and stuff, and because Super Mario Kart reuses a lot of assets (Like with having 4 Mario Circuits), it could be a lot of fun! Thanks anyways though, it was just an idea ^w^
Fans like you should apply to work for Nintendo as a video game designer officially. This type of work impresses me by the fans with hacks and mod designs which are unofficial games.
Do you have artistic/digital skills with Paper Mario style? Like animating/operating the sprites? I might have a vision for you, depending on your skills and preference.
Maybe with a shadder will look more like pixels.. What about make a isometric aventure like Solstice, LandStalker, Vodoo Nightmare or Equinox in 3D boxels with diferent camera..? Or Q*Bert, Snake Rattle & Roll, Bolo 2 or Sonic 3D Blast in boxels..
