This is just personal preference but I always preferred those “busy” covers. Though I will admit the more minimal covers do have a sophisticated air to them that I still find really appealing. They look really impressive!
I just wanna say that as a fellow artist and fanfic/book obsessed girl, youve really inspired me and got me into book binding, and ive used many of your tactics and ideas to make some of my own 😁
Ah yes, Battle of the Labyrintht, my favorite PJO book… As a longtime Percy Jackson fan and Jess Less fan, this was extremely enjoyable and very cool to watch!!
I prefer the Last Olympian. I read today more than 200 page to see if Percy and Annabeth will be together,i wait a whole book for them to kiss since they kissed in the Labyrint before erruption.
I just love to see these books getting a well deserved leather re-design. I'm also an amateur bookbinder (got too excited watching Martina make so many books) and I did my first book in the first lockdown (because why not?) with no tools. Sort of. I used everything I could find at home that looked like a good substitute xd
1. Those covers are awesome. Glad this appeared on my feed. 2. Thief is one of the words I have dyslexic moments over. I had to look it up. So in addition to the extra T in labyrinth, you have the E before the I in thief. Wabi Sabi. They're beautiful. They're yours. Reading them will be worth every moment you spent with them already (I say only ever reading the first one.)
OH MY GOD I LOVE THE PJO SERIES! Irnoiclly enough I'm dyslexic and ADHD myself and Greek at that, all three factors actually kept me from reading the books till late in my 8th grade through 9th grade years of school. But, once I did I was hooked!!! I do have to say some things in the books haven't aged well but the author owns up to that pretty well and it isn't done on purpose. But I cant wait for you to read them!! Honestly great books and Percy has guts, that little kids is Per-sassy though and though!! I come to your channel for your creative content and I consider myself a part of many fandoms, no matter what you chose to make art for I think it'll be thoroughly fun an entertaining or at least it should be for you! Anyway thanks for the great video!!!
@@STARBOY-044 Some of the wording in the later books like the feathers in Pipers hair and some comments or wording used for Frank and Leo. But, if specifically in the earlier books I cant think of much or any probably should've stated that in my original reply but it sliped my mind too at the time as I jumped into thinking all the books would've been read not just the first 5 even if that was what the video was about.
@@Im_Nier Sorry! I answerd this just now in the comment below yours and stuff!! Check there if you wanna see it since that comenter asked the same thing you did and I feel it would be repetitive to copy paste what I said here from there!
@@kingghoul7162 Hmmm weird no one like no one had an issue with those for years!People of colour and of the same ethnicities as the characters were praising the author. Suddenly BLM happened in 2020 and woke westerners started finding “problematic” almost anything race related that wasn’t using the perfect wording standard created by that movement.
I honestly would never shut up on how much I love your bookbinding vids. I honestly want to bind a book someday, and I thank you for getting me into this wonderful craft!
As a lover of crafts, a fan of Percy Jackson, and an aspiring graphic designer/book illustrator I loved this video! So much attention to detail and they ended up looking amazing!!
You did an absolutely beautiful job on the covers, these books hold a special place in my heart and seeing someone take their time to make the books into a leather bound set that fits the books brings me so much joy. I hope you enjoy reading the Percy Jackson books as much as the rest of us likely have. I know this likely will not be seen but I still wish to leave this here, I hope whoever may be reading this is having a good day/night.
0:43 SAME I took Latin for 5 years instead and I was a Harry Potter kid who refused to read PJ. That was a thing. I would also get like pissed off when my cousin would talk about it and something in the mythology wouldn’t be accurate! But now I’m a senior in highschool and halfway through lightning thief and I’m obsessed.
Honestly these look fantastic, I don't know if you can even call yourself an amateur anymore! I might attempt a project like this sometime, as I already have a shelf shrine to all of Rick Riordan's books. I hope that you enjoy the Percy Jackson series, they truly are fantastic! Keep up all the great work!
I came here a few months ago for that magical MCYT content and by god am I staying for any other content you make! I’ve never read the Percy Jackson books either, but you skills are just too cool to not look at! Beautiful cover and a nice video! Great job!
You should totally read it! I'm a MCYT fan myself and have found myself enjoying reading the PJO series and just Rick Riordan's books in general. Though if you do read it, I recommend not reading the book/all of the books in one sitting as I wasn't able to fully get attached to the characters.
As an MCYT kid whos gotten into PJO lately, DO IT!! it so good my man. Coming from someome with reading problems and couldn't/didnt read the Harry potter books, 12yr me would have LOVED pjo.
The moment I'm over with my exams I'll be throwing myself head-first into bookbinding fanfic and rebinding all my books to have pretty covers. I cannot wait😭 Also, Double Life Hype👀
Double life hype for sure The 3rd episodes are coming out in 2 days,I wonder what chaos happens with scar and the ranch, cheater duo,and of course goat horn crew
@@TinaTissue28 If you go on Jess' channel, the video right before this one is about bookbinding fanfiction, aka making the text block. And if you use an old book or make a cover as seen here is up to you ^.^
recently I've been into trying to bind fanfics and re-bind old books (whether they just have ugly covers or they're falling apart). finding your videos has been a LIFESAVER!!!!!
First I watched a Harry Potter books in Nerdforge's vid.. Now Percy Jackson?? I'm getting a lot of book and fantasy recommendations from RU-vid today... Honestly- I just love it... I actually wanna know how long and how much this cost for this project? Like- just in case I wanna try it out I'd know how much my wallet would cry... Edit: Holy sheesh- I just watched that and commented this like at the start and the Nerdforge- oh gosh XD... That made me laugh XD
I agree with you when you talked about how the smaller the details the harder it is the peal the vinyl, my mom has a cricut and it get difficult to peal off those small details. I actually confinced my mom took not sell our cricut after I watched this video and I showed her all the cool things we can do with it!
JESS!!!! This looks A M A Z I N G! As a huge PJO fan growing up, I can't tell you how EXCITED I felt when I saw this video! Also, it's amazing to see your progress and improvement throughout all your book-binding projects :) I love your videos, MCYT and now this, can't wait to see what is coming up next!
This makes me wanna change all my paper cover books into hard covers but i don't have the materials to do so 🥲 I also love how good these turned out and I hope I can do this too
Honestly I really just love the bookbinding process and adding fandoms in it. Really inspires me to do it with my own fanfics... once I'm done writing them lol
I'm a really big fan of the PJO series and I have to say I was shocked and depressed when you tore of the covers of the books but seeing you make new and even better covers was worth it. I love your work and this is like the first video of your channel that I saw but I love it already.
I've never seen a single other video on this channel and when I tell you that part way through this video when both Homestuck and Doublelife were mentioned I was SHOOK
I appreciate the creativity, it's great you had fun with it and enjoyed the process, but as an actual book-binder myself, I can tell you there's a lot of stuff done wrong. Thickness of the leather, the corners, the way the cover was done (duct tape is a no-no) etc. At the of the video, it's apparent you didn't create enough space between the spine and the case and thus it strains the end papers which can eventually result in tearing. It also seems the leather wasn't glued properly since there seem to be a few air bubbles under. But as I said, it's great you had fun with it. 👍
THIS IS AMAZING!!! as someone who grew up reading percy jackson and is now into mcyt, this video and this entire channel is amazing! thanks jess!!!! -your fellow floridian
Yay I finally found a bookbinder who is fun to watch! ETA: you can use a medication (dosing) syringe or a pipette to transfer the dye from the container to the airbrush without spilling.
Jess Less: I usually do one book at a time but this time I'm doing five Me who wants to request for her to do Wings of Fire which has 21 individual books with 18 having physical copies. If that made no sense, the main plot has 15 books separated into 3 arcs with five books each, the two Legends which are bigger stories told from three different protagonists, and the Winglets which are ebooks but have a physical book with all four together
When doing the spine stiffener figure out the grain direction of the cardstock and align the grain along the long side. Wet one side and it will naturally curl towards the dry one. Give it a bit more curve and it's ready to be glued in place by the cover cloth/paper. Aligning the grain also makes it round with less buckles.
Those look amazing, I'm thinking of doing some bookbinding myself and I like your style. Also loved how you made the outro with the "Labyrintht" while keeping "The Lightning Theif" in full display 😂
Listen… did a part of my soul die when you ripped those covers? Yes! Am I also totally gonna do this myself since I love book binding and my adhd brain constantly wants me to change hobbies? Absolutely yes
Your video on bookbinding fanfiction made me obsessed with the practice, so even when I wasn't in the fandom of this series or your minecraft series, I watched them. I really want to try it one of these days, for sure. I actually have a book that's literally falling a part with ripped pages due to it falling a part, so. I really wanna do that, but all the prices of these supplies add up 😅. I love the process of this book binding :) The foil and embellishment looks cool.
the one thing i would have changed is different colours for the different books but the finished product still looks amazing ( better then anything i could do lol) well done!
When you went to glue the covers and then needed to push 🤣I LOST IT! Blue dye nails are hilarious! Also thanks so much for showing us the realistic process for us to try it out. I don't have years of hours in every skill and too expensive equipment ❤
I found you through your fanfiction binding video and your work is so cool!! I’m a big fan of Percy Jackson so it was awesome to see you put your own spin on the covers. Hope you like the books :)
I’ve only seen like 3 videos from you but I can already say you are exactly who I wanna be. Fun, creative, entertaining and ambitious, honestly I would not be able to stick through this entire process I would’ve quit 3 hours in
When using the Cricut, wait for the foil to cool, then peel. It will help the foil not to peel up when removing the backing paper. Alternatively, you could use the permanent stick kind that does not need to be ironed on - especially if you are sealing it afterwards. Re: the leather - you can find leather that is a bit thinner so that it is easier to wrap. Awesome tutorial!!
I do the weeding process for work, it's easiest to peel out the center of letters first and as you peel the larger chunks, hold down corners with your weeding tool/tweezers
Quick tip, go get a gravity feed spray gun for bigger projects like this. Tape off anything you don't want dye on, stick them to a board or something, spray them all at the same time.
By the title I gasped when I thought you were going to redo the story itself, but now I know you meant to make not the BOOKS better, but just the covers!
i love watching you book bind, it has really inspired me to try it out myself!. Honestly, any project of yours is interesting and I would totally watch them :)
I think my soul just left my body in that forst shot of the cover being ripped But it so so so whort it!!! I really live the OG covers as much as any other PJ fan but i find peace in the "simplistic" versions you came up with 💖💖
You are binding Percy Jackson series... I think that if your hand covered with blue colour, you are actually blessed... And Percy would loved the rebinding of the book about himself...
Great video as always! If you ever need any ideas for future projects I'd love it if you could make the Book of Prophecies Past and Future from Empires SMP.
1. THIS IS AMAZING I really hope you get to read the books because they really are amazing! 2. I don't know if it's a fandom you ARE interested in but Doctor Who seems right down your street! Can't wait for the next video
How come people seem to dislike paperback books? 99% of bookbinding I see is making hardcovers and very rarely find any paperback ones. This question has been in my mind for weeks now
Imagine going to her house like: Oh you have the Percy Jackson books too? Where’d you get these covers I haven’t seen them before I made them myself.. What? I made them on my own Oh cool No you don’t understand! I cut the leather, I dyed it, I put the letters on! Alright alright chill
I love watching people give books the love they deserve by rebinding them. And doing rebinds in leather! That color blue is EVERYTHING!! 💜 💜 💜 Very well done and absolutely gorgeous work Also I'm sure you've gotten this a lot by now, but I highly highly HIGHLY recommend Sea Lemon's diy book press. Made one myself as my first ever press and I still use it even after getting a more professional press
Seeing my beloved childhood series be ripped apart is not how I thought I’d start my weekend. Also some series suggestions: Six of crows, Wings of Fire, Helen Moss’s secrets of the Tombs series, and The Lost city of Z. Also please please PLEASE let us know how you found the Percy Jackson series!
I personally enjoy watching your book binding videos, as I don't watch any mcyt. I loved the episode though. On the Percy Jackson movie: while it is horribly inaccurate to the books, it is still a good movie (which can and will be mentioned by every father when they hear the song 'Poker Face' out in the wild)
Can you do a book for Technoblade like something similar to Ghostbur with fan art in it and quotes from him as like a memorial you don’t have to it just a suggestion
omg you just kinda blew my mind. SO trying to make a long story short, in college I learned how to book-bind for a class. This morning, I saw something that made me want to take it up again. I mostly remembered how to do it, but I needed a refresher so I clicked on your video almost at random (I'm planning to rebind my Percy Jackson books too lol). Imagine my surprise as I'm watching and a logo I MADE (Double Life) appears on the screen out of nowhere. I didn't even know you were somewhat connected to the series haha! Funny how stuff like that happens lol. Anyway great video!
Im so glad you get to read these now, especially without having to wait for new books (well... not yet for you at least) and the tv show on the horizon!
Dude, these are GORGEOUS covers. If I had these in hand, I would honestly be so afraid to use them for fear of damaging them. I actually am trying to collect all the Percy Jackson and universe books, in every variant possible, so maybe later down the line I could make my own custom covers. Way later.
