Every drummer has used moon gel at some point in their life. Some use a gel here and there, but others go all out. So why not just use one giant moon gel instead of 14 little moon gels on one drums? I wanted to see what it would take to first made a giant moon gel, but also what it would sound like on a drum set. Not the most practical of diy projects, but still fun!

Recently bought some 2 part silicone 10 to 30 shore hardness , poured in bottoms of every cup, bowl, pan i had all different thicknesses, 30 bucks for lifetime supply of varying thicknesses, shapes, and as long as its clean it hangs on cymbals also. Even poured it around the outer edge of my snare batter between the rim and batter groove, let it cure on the drum, overnight, removable too, shocking results, would love to see what you can come up with using 2 part soft silicone

The best snare dampening method I learned from a classic percussionist. It requires a lint free cloth and two binder clips. You just fold the cloth in half, drape it over the top fraction of the snare and clip it to the hoop using the binder clips. How tight the clips are determines how much dampening you'll get. It doesn't leave residues and doesn't damage the head.

too many drummers fail to realize -that how your drums sound behind your kit is NOT, how they sound out in front of them... plus -DO NOT try to emulate a specific recordings drum sound -acoustically. there have been many a trick in the mixing room to designate the sound produced on that specific recording.

For those who use multiples of moongels, how about using different heads🤔? The premise is understood, but with so many options, why go down the moongel rabbit hole? Jmo. One could work on one's hand technique instead of dampening and persisting to smash the drums? All great stuff on this channel tho😉👍👍👍

The felt pads that are used on the bottom of chair and table legs work well for dampening. They have a sticky side to them and come in various sizes and shapes. It is necessary to clean the area with rubbing alcohol to make them stick. Unfortunately, you cannot remove them like a moon gel.

I love when drummers come by with their own, Moon Gel. Because it saves me a boatload of money on, Duct Tape. That I don't have to waste on their drums. Otherwise? I still prefer the drummers wallet.. On the snare drum head. With some duct tape.. That's my snare drum sound. And has been for over 50 years now. No need to change. Use your god damn wallet! And chunks of folded duct tape. On the other drum heads And on the, on the crash and ride cymbals. Sometimes on the hat, also. Where I prefer 15 inch, hats. Way better than standard,, 14 inch. So these old guys, not bad. For folks my age, our age. Aged folks, like us. But they have lost some of their, piss and vinegar. Because they are old. Like me. Like us. It might be interesting to note. In the earliest,, 1970s. I cut my teeth. On the same gear. They were cutting their hits upon.. At another studio. And so I was using the same equipment. That they were using. Back in the earliest, 1970s. 50 years ago. Still the best stuff to use, today. Still what they use.. No reason to change. When it gives you a classic sound. Everybody knows and loves. When they don't even know what they are listening to? But they know. They can feel it.. So can we. As so the name of that gear, used. The American made and famous, API Audio Console Mixer. The Ampex, MM-1200, 16 and 24 track,, 2 inch wide, analog tape recorders. That record all of the tracks. Similar stereo machines to generate the, Master Makes, upon. Before it is sent to the record cutting, Mastering Engineer. To be put onto disc''s of vinyl. Later rereleased on CD''s. With a slightly different tonality. And truer to the original mixes. With some additional,, software enhancements, today. That have been Remastered. That not all purists agree upon. And the reasons for these discussions. And that's the way it went. That's the way it continues to go. Progress marches on. With old original mixes. Not all of which are being, remixed. Though some are. Annd then you get vastly different mixes. The same but not the same. The original recordings but not the original mixes. Now they are totally different. But not. As the bulk of the elements remained the same. But other itchy fingers got involved.. Since the Masters have been sold. A dozen times over. Two different alteernative factions. All cooks. All wanting to destroy the pie. And nothing left for Jack Horner. No more plums. Now, prunes. All prunes. Which will certainly get you moving. Where? That's all up to where it's going to take you. To some it will be a flush. For many of the others. They will smear themselves thoroughly, with it. Beeyond that of an embrace. They will be,, wreaking, from it! It'll be the best shit! Since sliced bread! They will think. And so we have diversity. In hearing perceptions. As we agreed to disagree. Because we are Americans. And I'm the one who is usually right.. I'm not always right. But I'm never wrong. Think about that. And that's why I'm so good at what I do. And others haven't a clue.. Boo-hoo Hoo. That's who. It's you who. That don't know what you're listening to? But think you do because the math is right. Yeah no. That's not how it works. Here he has nothing to do with mathematics. Though mathematics is highly involved with hearing. It's a difficult concept for many to grasp with, colllege degrees. That's why I don't have one.. I'm not limited in that manner. And therein lies my charm. I hear what no one else hears. What no one else can hear.. It's strange, I know. But it's the way it is. So, all in all. You are partially right. And you sell a good game. That'll make everybody's recordings, better. Of their I have no fault to contend with. It's all good solid information that works! And one should take heed in their pitch. Because, it works. And the more the merrier! It might be interesting to note. I was able to replace the, Moon Gel and duct tape. With, Allison Research, KEPEX-500's,, a.k.a. KEPEX-1's. Key-able,, Downward Expander Gates. They are electronic, Moon Gel. And are totally adjustable. For however much damping, you want.. On your drums.. And the room. And the ambience. And the snap. And the sizzle. And the kick. And the blast. You'll have. Without the need of sticky shit! No more sticky stuff! Huzzah! Renaissance style! Huzzah! KEPEX! 1176! Neve! API! And you get that sound! That is, unforgettable! And repeatable! On everything and anything you want it on. And that's generally, everything! Yee ha! Woo hoo! Yabadabadooo! Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! It's magical! It's what, Audio Engineering,, is, all about! It's making completely unnaturally recorded vocals sound so damned natural! That's what Fine Audio Engineers, do! Natural doesn't mean you do nothing! That's beginner crap! Natural sound means it's been, unnaturally, manipulated! To sound, perfectly natural! When it absolutely is not! But it sounds that way. Which is what we do. And they are highly processed. All of those lead vocals! To the most grotesque of processing! Which makes that grotesque sounding vocals sound, oh so natural. LMAO! He ha he ha he ha! That's when I laugh and Fart like a jackass at the same time!! And all because people are listening to, in phase but out of polarity, monitoring speakers and headphones. And they don't know it. Because they have college degrees. Yup.. I'm sorry. It's true. As 99% of the expert populace out there are a bunch of, ssad idiots. And thus will alwayys be, such. So, good informational video, overall. I agree wholeheartedly. RemmyRAD

Then came ebay chinesium (red!) knock-offs at a fraction of the price, and even better, YT posts for those of us lucky enough to have the space and resources for this solution. But do we care that it needs to be blue?! Buy less, mix colours up, it's all the same stuff, and it'll be identifiably yours. Cheers from the UK.

It's honestly crazy how useful this could be to a lot of drummers who don't have space for a KIT at all and in situations pertaining to noise levels being an issue. I saw 9-5-22 and thought 'How the f*** did it end in May if this video is only 21 hours old'. God damn your dating system, Yanks!

this video is wonderfully upbeat! (see what I did there) Do this more often, I love this style of editing :) A silly idea combined with snappy cuts and a bit of irony is perfect and also fits you personally really good :)

All my 1973 ssb gretsch kit have internal dampeners' , just turn the knob to what tension you want and its done. Moongels are crap, they fall off and look stupid.

Unless you count house kits I’ve NEVER used moongels. I feel accomplished 🥳🥳

Always great, and Travis Scott "London" sound effects between 2:05 and 2:10 is genius. Or I'm hearing what I want to hear.

Despite this being a gimmick, this is actually a very smart. If you do the same thing you just did, but instead, cut them up into actual moon gel sized pieces, you'd have a very large supply of moon gels for a fraction of the price.

That would be a cool idea for someone who uses a lot of moon gels, because you can cut it to whatever sizes you need instead of having multiple gels that might fly off into the sunset when you strike the drum.

very true. Idk if the effort is worth it when you can just use the gels as is. but then again you can batch them out in no time and be set for life 😂

I've been a drummer for 46 years now and I have NEVER used a "moongel". I don't even know what it is. Also: you went through a lot of trouble in this video and the end result was a drum kit that sounded so bad it should be set on fire. Why?

Nice! You should make a ring shaped one to leave the center of the drums free though... Please do a follow up, pretty please! I'd do it myself but I could never level a barrel like you can :)

SO WEIRD, its like pure resonance, no attack, no percussion from the strike, nadda.
