In this video, I make an Industrial Design Coat Hook, using a rebar rod to give it the real industrial decor look. It was a good welding project for me, I did not heat the steel for bending I just used bits of pipe that slid over the rebar to get the leverage for the bend.
The steel plate is 3mm thick, 105mm long, and 42mm wide.
The Rebar is 13mm rebar
Main tools used, Welding Magnets V-Pads, MIG welder, angle grinder, Hammer, and a Drill.

I have decided not to comment on finishes, as there are so many answers and questions. As what climate you are in, is it inside-outside, lots of rain, ice, do you want long term and rarely touch, or a wax with a wipe over every year. That is why I have no opinion, Please ask someone in your area what you should use, I feel this is a better way to find out. Thank you for your comment.

I see you're using a very handy combination square. If you add the Amazon link to your description above, I'll buy it! One thing I've learned I'd like to share... I find it's easier to clean my steel before marking, cutting, and/or welding - especially if I'm making several pieces at one go. Thanks once more for a very useful video!
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 3 года назад
The one I am using is a "WOLF 400MM COMBINATION SQUARE WSC400" it has a nice solid ruler in it. Amazon do not sell that brand, I bought it at Total Tools here in Australia. If you google the name above it should come up with a few places that you can buy it, it is a good solid unit. Thank you for offering to buy through my link, very much appreciated. I do the same in cleaning before cutting, especially if the bits are going to be small, and it is far easier to clean most bits before welding and then touch them up after. Thank you for your comment.

How do take care about corrosion for your rebar projects? I use black-finishing with linseed oil. What do you think of that? Yours, Richard from the opposite side of the planet.
@GavinClarkdiy

Hi Richard, I have found using black-finishing with linseed oil onto hot steel looks great and makes the steel looks very strong, but have found I like rebar with a bit polished look as it makes all the ribs stand out and gives it depth. Sorry for my English (translated by the translator). Great ideas. I will repeat some of them with pleasure. In this project, the nuts look interesting, but not very practical. If the hook is for clothes, then the loop on the clothes themselves is usually small and will not fit on the nut. I like the manufacturing process itself. Made with care and with a soul. 👍👍👍
@LawtonDigital
@LawtonDigital 3 года назад
Your translator works great! In Russia, I noticed everyone uses loops to hang coats. In America we typically do not use loops, and so the bolts help hold the clothing. Of course, the great thing about fabricating your own products: you may modify the designs to make you happiest!

Really nice work. Wondering if you sell your projects or are they for friends and relatives. Am a retired contractor/ tile setter/ metal head. Need projects such as you do to keep my sane. Thanks mate.

Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. No I do not sell my projects, so I can't help you with that, but I do enjoy making things, and I am sure you will, I wish you the best for your projects, the sales will come when you start making things, as will the custom jobs people will think up for you.

I would have just cut the heads of bolts off to make the end caps and possibly just super glued it on. Nevertheless, great job, neatly made as usual. 👊👍

I like your eye for detail, like the hidden weld thou the back of the plate, most people would weld it on the front. You have a new subscriber from Detroit Michigan.

Gavin, Was thinking of making hooks similar to what you just made. Great tutorial...Do you have a link to the cool countersink bit that you used for your screw and welding holes?
@GavinClarkdiy

I have been using an ("Alpha" 3 Flute Countersink bit) if you can't get them at your local hardware shop, here is a link to help you find your local distributor for the Alpha and Sterling products. www.sterlingtools.com.au

Thank you very much Peter, no at this stage I do not have a patron account, mainly because I feel I don't have the time to do extra videos just for them, and I feel that is what I would like to do for them. Thank you for your comment.

Aww mate! Not another brilliant design I have to make! Curse you! (For anyone else that means Gavin has inspired me to get up and do something similar by the aesthetics of the object and his demonstration of action).

Great idea...by the way you can put a quarter inch ring around the pipe it will always hold it shape. SIR GÉE
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 3 года назад
Thank you very much. Yes that would help it hold it's shape, and for this job it would have worked beautifully, but to do a tight bend the pipe needs to be thin so it can get in tight when it is bending. I do have quite a bit of this secondhand bending pipe so cutting a bit off is not a big issue for me. I do appreciate your comment Thank you.
