Rusty Vintage Vice - Perfect Restoration
I bought this vice to replace my faithful little Woden vice after it decided it had had enough and broke in two. I got this Record No3 from eBay for around $30 and it has to be said its in a pretty sorry state but all that is about to change with this video. The jaws were pretty much destroyed, the knurling was all worn and it been drilled into a chipped too so they are replaced with brand new ones as were the screws as they were seized into the casting and took considerable heat to shift them. Everything else on the vise was salvageable with a bit of blasting, welding, plating and painting and of course the custom printed decals which turned out if not a little dark. Anyway I'll let the video do the talking.
I hope you enjoy it and ill see you all again very soon.

I'm leaving this comment to help with the algorithm. I discovered your channel through the restoration on your WRX. I watched every part of it multiple times. It was so satisfying to see from start to finish. At the time I was trying to save my 2003 Impreza WRX from the scrap yard, so your videos were super relatable and motivated me to try and save the car. Even though I am being forced to sell my Imp due to how far gone it is from frame rot, I never unsubbed from your channel. I haven't had the time or interest in watching your work lately because it makes me feel bitter and sad that I have to give up on my own project that I fell in love with. I saw your community post where this video was linked, and I knew I had to return. Please don't stop uploading. Never give up on what you love. You will regret it forever, but you will never regret giving it all your effort up until the very end. Trust me. Best of luck!

When I acquired my No.3 from a guy on Freecycle it was old (probably 1960s) but hadn’t seen much use, just stored in a shed for decades. So I gave it a rub down and bolted it to my bench as it was with its original patina. Hasn’t affected the way it works. When I found my No.6 it was left outside an engineering company for the scrappers 20 years ago. Due to years of heavy abuse, the grips were mashed to Bbbûgggerrry, and the amount of backlash was a crazy two turns!! Almost useless. But after stripping it, flattening the washers, replacing the screw pin and the nut location pin with homemade ones, it worked just fine again. The threads were as they left the factory! Zero backlash. So I switched the grips around top to bottom, greased it all up and rebuilt it. Again, no paint. Over £120 worth of vices at second hand value, for free and a bit of work. Neither are as photogenic as yours, but they’re great tools, far better than the new Record wood vice I bought a few years old. That has an annoying fault that bugs me. This is why I hate thieves. People throw out, dump and give away often perfectly useable or repairable tools every day. All you have to do is look. Thank you for sharing Peace

Fabulous job, bringing back a great British made product. Though interestingly the slides were made in India and the main body was made in England. The modern Irwin made offering of the Record vice is a hateful looking thing with castings so rough you can cut your skin on. Love the fact that you used the correct colour as well , Roundall blue. I did one of these a while ago and used hammerite smooth blue, which irritates me every time i look at it. Still it was very satisfying to do.

Nice project and finish. It looks very nice. I have a Craftsman vice pretty close to that same size that I am going to refurbish. And I am going to try powder coating it. I know it will take a lot longer to get a vice that size heated up for the powder coat to flow, but I am going to give it a go and see... Thumbs Up for your great looking vice though...

Great video as always. Is there a reason why you always zinc plate and not nickel plate? Nickel plating seems both easier in handling and leaves a nicer finish. or is this something you would like to try in the future? No critic at all, just wondering.
