Christmas came early this year - well done gents. Of the 3 I’d pick the Maverick. Like Andre said, it’s way more trucky than the other two, and significantly cheaper when similarly equipped. With the SC, besides being worse at brake applications, Nathan’s thoughts on the dual clutch is another reason I’d be hesitant to choose it over the Maverick.

I'd also like to see transmission temperature monitoried. It's one thing to tow once, but it's quite another if the transmission's life is significantly shortened or if it requires significantly more regular service. It may be possible to monitor it with a sufficiently advanced CANBUS device, if the codes are known and the device can interpret. Otherwise it might require putting a sensor in place of a plug on the side of the transmission itself and recording the data the old fashioned way.

@bechtoea
@bechtoea 2 года назад
Ford brought out the Maverick with price being the primary objective. What they have found out, especially on the higher capability models and higher trims, is that people will throw Ranger or even F-150 money at a Maverick if it's worthy. I know, for example, I'd pay that $4000 more for Santa Cruz level refinement. So yeah, put the engine cover on it, make the seats more substantial, and charge me more. And I think they will. I do predict the 2 year Maverick refresh will have some more equipment for the XL at an entry price of around $23K, and with each model, the equipment and refinement will increase as will the prices.

@@tracy2928 Your choice. I just don’t see a unibody holding up to any real work. It’s comparable to heavily modifying an older jeep Cherokee and off-roading it. Sure they can do great things off-road, but do it too much and the chassis starts tearing up. The spot welds break and slowly become worn out. As a mechanic I’ve been under a lot of vehicles and can honestly say that Japanese vehicles use the thinnest of metal in all of their body structures. So for me and the safety of my family, I’m gonna have a body on frame truck or no truck. Do as you wish!

If you or anyone else does decide on a Ridgeline make sure you pull the rear sill panels and check for water under the carpet. They've been having sealant issues since 2017. The rear cab wall lets water in where it pools in the floor under the carpet. Most don't know it since the carpet will not let water soak through. Honda will fix it but it's a very involved process.

Thank you Andre and Nathan! I have been waiting for this and I think the Ridgeline was exactly the right comparison truck. The Santa Cruz and Maverick are basically giving us a vehicle in the same vein as the G1 Ridgeline Honda introduced in 2006. Except this time, lots of people are interested in this kind of vehicle. I agree with Nathan's call and I think the Hyundai's 1000 lbs. of extra capacity is important. I need 4500 lbs. towing myself so that 5K limit is key. Do you have any observations on how stable each truck felt (with the trailer) in normal driving?

My pick for the winner is the Maverick, because it comes with the brake controller and has a tow haul mode and has better down hill performance. I suspect the reason the Mavericks tow rating is limited to 4,000 pounds vs 5,000 pounds might be the cooling capacity. It was getting warm at the top of the test. That is often the reason there is a lower weight capacity for a given tow package. If I remember correctly, Andre’s F150 power boost also derated its power for a short time while towing up the Ike, then when it cooled down into the acceptable range it then resumed full power for the remainder of the trip up the hill.

The Santa Cruz is a very nice first effort from Hyundai at a pickup for America. However, as goof as it drives and great design it is, at $41k CAD it is uncomfortably close to the midsize pickups like the Colorado, Tacoma and Ranger. @@maxracingteam23 man that’s unfortunate, hope you enjoy your new taco. Id be willing to take the risk on the Ford. With how the car market currently is, my trade-in combined with how cheap the Maverick is would equate to monthly payments of about $200/month on a fully loaded $37k lariat awd. Cheap enough to tolerate minor reliability issues here and there, and cheap enough to where if I needed to get rid of it for something else, I wouldnt lose much money on it.

Dual clutch is NOT meant for off roading. There is a 8spd Automatic version of the Santa Cruz that can handle that..Nathan have mentioned this in the video. He just needs to test one out..The Dual clutch is just for performance and more towing. Keep in mind, the Santa Cruz was never meant to be a "Truck". It's a car that just happens to have a bed. The Maverick on the other hand is inspired to be a truck. Hence both have different ride qualities.

One thing I did notice is there is a button down on the middle console behind the shifter and it looks like it's for cruise control while you're going downhill , I'll research it in the manual and see . Because theway the picture on the button looks , it makes me think it does something to hold your set speed while going downhill 🤔?

It's unfortunate you rely on the vehicle trip computers for the fuel mileage for which you award points when it's proven over and again that most are very optimistic, IN YOUR OWN VIDEOS. Actual figures would be helpful, even if you have to go any distance to fill the fuel tank(s). A true towing comparison should include ACTUAL fuel economy!
@paulplack490
@paulplack490 2 года назад
Yes! This is also my frustration, especially when it's used to award or deduct points based on a 0.2 MPG difference. I especially want to know accurate MPG when towing with a turbocharged engine. My Ridgeline reads consistently 1.3 MPG high, as checked on a recent 2200-mile road trip. These factory MPG readings are calibrated by the marketing department to make buyers feel happy with their purchases.

I agree, especially considering Ford is famous for over estimating fuel economy by a considerable margin, proven on the fuel economy run Tommy did in the hybrid. I'm sure Hyundais is off too. Be interesting to see them both on a fuel economy trip like Roman used to do just highway speeds and then with city driving. Cause I am interested in long haul situations with heavy highway mileage, having comfort and a fuel economy expectation would be nice to see cause having a little bed would be handy for me.

@bechtoea

From being sort of an auto engineering nerd, it's probably the vehicle itself. The lighter weight of not just the frame and drivetrain components, but the vehicle itself can be a deciding factor. There is a weight where the trailer starts "wagging the dog" so to speak. So yeah, there is a bit of "nanny state" at work here, with payload and trailer ratings. Can it handle more? Maybe, but can it do it within the safety parameters the manufacturer requires? That's the question. Like, if a vehicle can tow 4000LBS up and down the Ike, I would have no issue going over that to tow on the flatlands. But would the manufacturer warrant such actions? No.

Maverick rides like a truck, has (less) comfort like a truck and has (less) gizmos like a truck. But the BIG takeaway is that if you wanna haul something and you have to use a small truck to do it, GET THE MAVERICK. it is just better at it and has more towing related features.

Watching the straps on the 2CV loosen on every bump was fun. With a soft suspension rig, you really need to strap to the wheels or suspension arms. The body moves too much to trust things to stay secure. I fully understand the limitations and don't fault you for using what you have, just pointing out an issue I've dealt with on my Jeeps.

Hyundai’s history of weak rod bearings and piston rings does not provide any confidence in long-term reliability of the drivetrain with the stresses of towing. Throw in at best unknown reliability of a dry clutch direct shift transmission under load and you are making a big gamble against terrible odds.
