Related to this: I first considered making a flying game instead of a racing/driving game but creating the sensation of speed is really hard when you have nothing around you. I might still try that genre in the future if I come up with a way to make the flying feel fast. First I have to fail with the current game development project. :)
The car you see in this video (and pretty much everything else too) will not be used in the final game. Check out my devlog videos to see what the actual game looks like: • Halfpipe in a Driving ...

Nice video! Honestly, I feel like you overdid the effect a little bit, especially when you added the motion blur (and maybe the engine sounds). It kind of felt like you were going 60km/h and 150km/h at the same time hahah

nice video. I think if you made the objects accelerate backwards when the vehicle passes them, it would help in creating a greater sense of speed.

Nice job man. Setting the camera closer to the ground also increase the sense of speed (like the ally effect in 2:05, but instead of walls you use the ground as the closest object). Also pitching down the camera (showing more road and less sky) makes the road looks go faster under the car. Check F1 onboard cameras from 1990 to 2010 to get more inspiration, older cameras where closer to the ground and make cars looks faster.

Great, for once there is some value from me being overly organized! :) This is the car acceleration sound: pixabay.com/sound-effects/audi-v8-acceleration-sound-6067/ Unfortunately the wind sound effect is from RU-vid library, "Car Cruise Hand Out Window". *However* a very good alternative can be found from Sonniss 2018 GDC SFX giveaway, called "wind_harsh_mountain_02_30_loop": sonniss.com/gameaudiogdc

Haven't tried to do that, but I imagine if you set the center of mass really low and increase friction, that will do the trick.

@eyeemotion1426
@eyeemotion1426 Год назад
I've used of few of these tricks too, for my car-game. The FOV change is quite a powerful one and can always be applied. The first time I applied it to my game, I was surprised at how much faster the car felt, yet controlable. Before, I did it with the velocity, but it made it difficult to race around the track. Weather effects or the part with the cloth, are very specific circuimstances, so you'll probably not going to use them that much. The part with the objects spread around, just shows how important level/track-layout is. How difficult/easy is it to set up a gear-system in Unreal Engine? And do you use UE4, UE4Chaos or UE5? I did mine in Godot first, but stumbled on restrictions quite quickly. Initial setup was easy, but tweaking things and adding things, slowed development to a crawl, because you really had to code in everything.
@7WeirdSeeds
@7WeirdSeeds Год назад
I have to admit that I don't yet have any idea how the gears are done. I'm using UE5 and chaos vehicles. Still very much in the learning phase. To me it seems promising but again this is the only system I have ever tried. I have seen some criticism regarding realism of physics online, so watch out. To me it's ok because the game I'm making is not serious.
@eyeemotion1426
@eyeemotion1426 Год назад
@@7WeirdSeeds For me, it's the same. I'm making an arcade racer with sim-qualities, but not full on. Something like Split Second (your explosive barrel video reminds me a bit of a mode in that game 😄), maybe a tad more sim-like physics, as that game is pretty arcade in that regard. But in Godot I wasn't able to get decent drift. It was either stuck to the road or driving as if on ice. I imported my car once in Unreal, to see if it was any better. Initial setup, especially the Chaos version, was a bit of searching. But the physics felt better than in Godot and easier to adjust. But I haven't tinkered with it since, because I was still doubting if I should stay with Godot or go with Unreal. Although their new terms regarding royalties, made it very enticing. Do you create your own assets or do you download/buy them from asset-stores? I never know exactly how much polygons to aim for, especially since I also want to be able to play it in VR.

More than a year late, but wouldn't camera lag also help with increasing the sense of speed?
@7WeirdSeeds
@7WeirdSeeds 6 месяцев назад
Do you mean that the camera would take a while to turn with the car? I don't think it has a dramatic effect, but that's an interesting idea and probably worth testing in the potential sequel to this video
@OverJumpRally

Yes, I added a camera lag based on the speed. Same for the FOV, which changes when you are going faster.

@@fernandosouza0308 For this particular video I used the City Sample Vehicles from the marketplace (it's free) and made everything else with the stuff from Quixel library (Edit: it seems the track asset is from the vehicle template though). @7WeirdSeeds
@7WeirdSeeds Год назад
For the constant camera shake I use CameraShakeBase blueprint class that is activated in the vehicle's blueprint. The 'bumps' are collision boxes that are placed on the road (note: I wouldn't do it like this anymore-I would rather do a some kind of a randomization in the vehicle blueprint)

@acoolrocket
@acoolrocket Год назад
You can make it that only the playable objects are with motion blur and the world/turning the camera doesn't have, if it makes any sense. A better example is how the new CODs does it by having the viewmodel only have motion blur whilst moving the camera doesn't (which IMO looks great because the viewmodel looks better with the motion blur). Either of each is toggelable.
@daydream605
@daydream605 Год назад
@@acoolrocket yeah that'd work perfectly. I'm guessing it's like a real life view point perspective because our eyes naturally dof depending on what we're focused on. I might do some driving later at high speed to compare 😂

UR 5 engine is too slow for the current hardware. You could never make a Serious Sam type game using it. Even a 4090 can't handled the amount of enemies. Just walking around with few enemies the UR5 engine bogs down the once mighty 1080GTX and only 70fps on a 4070 at 1080p. Its nice looking but not 5x better looking than optimized engines that have much better performance.
@7WeirdSeeds
@7WeirdSeeds 7 месяцев назад
Yes, you have to be quite careful with the performance. However, chaos physics performs much better than I initially thought. I tried an experiment where I shattered about 50 cubes, and it ran fine. Though I don't know if this too runs faster on other engines.
@Physics072
@Physics072 7 месяцев назад
@@7WeirdSeeds My guess is it will run 3-5x faster on other engines. I hope I am wrong on this but unless UR5 gets optimized its back to 1998 fps but with increased visuals. Hitting the point of diminishing returns. But it should help sell new hardware. The baseline graphics card needed for it in 4 years will be like 4090 performance. Hard to know for sure until more games come out. But so far its like a 4x performance hit.
@knuckles7410
@knuckles7410 4 месяца назад
You combined absolutely ALL the effects I hate as a gamer. Camera shake with no physical reason to happens, motion blur which I always disable in games as it looks like shit and hit on performance, and random out of place visual effects. Like I guess I'll have to drive in snowy landscape just to accommodate you as a dev? Cmon bro you can probably do better.
