In this video, Beloved takes on a tricky DIY project-restoring his prized Pulaski handle using steam-but things take an unexpected turn. While trying to fix a crooked handle, I may have just gotten myself into trouble by using Mrs. W’s commercial clothes steamer! Watch as I attempt to straighten the Pulaski handle using a makeshift steam vessel, a method inspired by old-school techniques.

What You’ll Learn:
Pulaski Handle Restoration: Learn how I use steam to try and straighten a warped Pulaski tool handle without replacing it.
DIY Steam Vessel Creation: Watch as I create a homemade steam vessel using a simple 4-inch ABS pipe and Mrs. W’s steamer (uh-oh!).
Tool Maintenance Tips: Discover the best practices for maintaining wooden tool handles to avoid warping, plus insights into why wood warps in the first place.
Featured Gear:
Wilton Wood Vice: A must-have for clamping down your tools securely while working.
Pulaski Tool: An essential tool for wildland firefighting, perfect for those tough outdoor jobs.
Jiffy Commercial Steamer: (Just don’t tell Mrs. W!) An unlikely but effective tool for generating steam and bending wood.
Why It Matters:
Wooden tool handles like those on the Pulaski are prone to warping over time, especially when exposed to uneven moisture. Rather than replacing the handle I worked so hard to create, I attempt to fix it using a centuries-old steaming method. This project shows you how to reintroduce moisture and straighten a warped handle-just don’t use your wife’s steamer unless you're prepared for the consequences!
Pro Tips:
Woodworking Restoration Techniques: Learn the step-by-step process of bending and straightening warped wooden handles using steam.
Avoid Common Tool Mistakes: Discover why leaning your tools against a wall can cause warping and how to prevent it.
Using the Right Tools: Find out why certain clamps, like the Jet Clamp, can help bind handles properly during the restoration process.

I am commenting on this as you are doing it. You need to rubber band 2 dowels to the handle so the water doesn't sit on the handle in the bottom of your pipe, plus it will not allow the steam to get into the wood if it is covered by water. An east coast man suggestion

For steam bending any wood, the standard is one hour per inch of thickness of material you wish to steam. Also, it's best to get the steam box (vessel) to 200-220°f before putting your materials inside. I'm a professionally trained and certified wooden boat builder. I'd like to think I know a thing or two about steam bending wood.

Ship builders have steaming steaming oak and other wood in pipes for hundreds of years in order to bend the planks to shape. I once owed a 19 ft. Century wooden boat that was built this way. It had a 54 hp engine in the middle of the boat and a steering stick that you moved forward and back to steer.

If you have warped plastic of some type due to shipping or what have you, we do a similar thing to try to realign the molecules back into their original shape. Simple handheld hair dryer blowing on the ABS or whatever material for about five minutes, makes it ultra-pliable, so just overcompensate a tad, and that usually fixes any warping issues the thing had.

Each piece of wood has stresses built into it during the growing process. You may have straitened this piece when you shaped it into a straight handle, but the stresses bent it back into its natural shape, like a spring does when you put lateral pressure on it and then let go. Steaming it can temporarily relive the stresses by relaxing the fibers, only to see the bend come back as the moisture dissipates.
