So, since wood exudes volatiles when it's heated, then heating it under vacuum would actually cause the volatiles to escape even sooner because there is no pressure helping to hold it together. What if we tried it the other way around? What if we INCREASED the pressure and tried melting the wood? Could we melt wood in supercritical carbon dioxide? That would probably dissolve the volatiles and we would get recrystallized organic compounds when the pressure was released. What if we tried something inert, like high pressure argon? What would that do?

My step-dad showed me how to set dowels using a drill. Pretty much what y'all were doing, but step-dad insisted it was 'resins' in the wood that melted together. All I knew was it was quick; the dowel spins in the hole, then suddenly 'grabs'.

We do bend wood with heat all the time in woodworking and building musical instruments like guitars. I’ve bent 1/8” poplar on a steel pipe heated with a torch. You rock the wood back and forth over the pipe until suddenly it becomes elastic and bends. It’s a freaky feeling! When it cools it retains the shape.

Must have been wild for that technician. “Oh shit, i forgot the plastic insert and now i’ll get fired.” Afterwards: “here, have this prize”

Cool effect that I didn't know about! I see several comments asserting that this is how the various fiberboards are made (HDF and MDF), but a quick google search suggests that these products use a synthetic resin as a bonding agent and are not just fused melted wood. Steam bending wood does have a very long history, but, as far as I know, can't be used to fuse two pieces of wood together, only to mildly change the shape of a single piece of wood of limited thickness.

The noun "vene"(boat) actually is associated with verb "venyä"(to stretch). More info about that in specific might be easier to find via name "haabjas” - an estonian single log dugout boat made from aspen (haab/haappa - name of the tree from which it's produced).

Fun fact, as an architecture student we were taught that adhesives are one of the biggest barriers to reusing wood from older buildings because it’s pretty much impossible to remove and have a normal life of lumber again. I wonder how this could be adapted to construction to encourage more reuse as well as of course reducing adhesives which are generally one of the most toxic construction materials anyways

As far as I know, wood pellets made of saw dust are also produced under high pressure by lignin melting without any glue or other additives.

I melted some wood with friction last night, it wasn't cost effective but it was pretty cool

Instead of a vacuum chamber and laser to bend the timber you can use an old technic of steam bending at which you remove the oxygen from around the timber and apply heat at the same time from the steam. There is a formula for the amount of time a peace of timber needs to be in the steam chamber depending on it's thickness.

This kind of bending wood is a part of our tagin community. In this, we bend bamboo by heating it in the fire and then we apply force to the bamboo and repeat it until we get our desired shape. If we don't heat the bamboo before applying the force, it just breaks but when we apply heat and force, the bamboo gets bent and it retains it's shape. This is even done to some kind of woods which i'm not really aware of, as this practice is being lost and I don't fully know the process as well and just told the jest of it. This practice has been our tradition, and it is fascinating to learn the actual science behind it.

Fun fact: this process is called friction welding. It is used in large scale manufacturing industries by rubbing two plates of metal together with machinery, causing it to weld together.

Wow! I hope that the worker who accidentally discovered that you could weld wood without the need for plastic was given a raise or promotion! After all, he found a more environmentally friendly, cheaper method that also saved time! (Also, since it eliminated the fumes created by melting plastic, it was safer!) That sort of discovery is priceless!

This is essentially friction stir welding. You don't actually melt the material, which is good because that would make joints weaker.

Dear Acton Lab. You absolutely can melt wood, or ratger heat it to where the lignin will glue it to form something new. Prime example. Wood pellets are glued together by friction and pressure that makes heat that makes a pellet.

Crazy that they only figured this out 20 years ago. Feels like something that would be an ancient crafting or masonry technique.

The second part about permanently bending wood under high temperature exists for more than a thousand years now. The primary use of this technique was in ship construction which is also used to this day. Only difference is that it uses steam to achieve high enough temperature without burning the wood.

I remember asking this question a few years ago on reddit and was called an idiot for even thinking about. Well, thanks Action Lab for disproving everyone that called me an idiot for being curious!

Okay, this works for fastening one end of a round wood dowel into a round hole in the wood. That only gets half the job done. How about the other end of the dowel? You can't spin it to heat it to the bonding point. How about a square or rectangular tenon in a mortise? You can't spin either end. You can't really vibrate it the way the Swiss did, either. Maybe some ultrasonic energy applied to rectilinear joints in a focused manner would work? Or focused laser energy? There's more experimentation waiting to be done to broaden this technique for more versatile applicability.

They've been shaping wood with steam in sealed chambers for a long time. They clamp the wood to a form, then raise its temperature above "melting" with dry steam and no air/oxygen. Then after a time they let it cool and it's permanently formed. I think it started in the 1800s.

I thought this was pretty well known for a long time? Wood pellets are sawdust bonded via heat and pressure from forcing the material through a conical die. They come out thw other end with a smooth outer layer that keeps the pellet intact.

It blows my mind that this has only gone on record within 20 years. I wouldn't be surprised if someone accidentally figured this out in the past, but it's crazy that only 20 years ago, we finally rediscovered it.

I tried for some time now to popularize friction drilling of wood, which is quite similar to your using a peg in a hand drill. You should try it. I made a large wardrobe from oak, and by accident tried drilling at very high speed to produce smoke, for fun. And it turned out to be the best way of drilling oak. Exit hole is incredibly neat, and its edge is sharp. Much better than with professional drill bits. From the church organ makers I learned that oak is aggressive on the screws, so they singe the holes to make them inert... not needed with friction drilling. So how you do it... Use any dull drill bit and start drilling. Once your hole is just deep enough that the bit won't dance off, increase speed to max, but only a slight pressure, up to the point when smoke appears. Then apply some more pressure, and be amazed how smoothly the bit sinks into the hole. Note: it doesn't work as good with sharp drill bits.

this is neat to pieces. can it be used for every wood related fastening process? dressers, shelves, walls, etc. if so, then every country should immediately pass laws banning harmful adhesives since just using the wood itself is an option now, and even shows stronger bonding results than the harmful stuff.

I think you can melt any material with High Frequency Vibrations. Look up the "Hutchinson Effect".
