I’ve been doing a lot of research about doing a lift on my taco. I really appreciate you posting this. This could happen to a lot of people. Thanks for having a pair, owning it and posting it for others!
Hey man! Just want to say thanks for putting up this vid and for all the info. I have the same exact setup with a deaver AAL. I had bad vibes and was going crazy trying to figure out the root cause. Was able to get under my truck earlier today and found both my OEM shims in the wrong direction as well. All fixed now and no more bad vibez. Cheers man!
I replaced my leafs outright cause I didn't want the factory leafs anymore. I went with the Icon rxt 3 stage leaf pack. I currently have them on option 3 and the truck rides like a dream. I also have ome 886 coils with bilstein 5100s all around. Overall, I have a modest 2 inch lift even with all the armor and bumpers I've added. My truck weighs in at 5400 lbs last I checked using a truck stop cat scale.
I’m excited too!! I only went 10 days. With my tapered blocks!! At least now I know the Tacoma driveline is pretty damn tough to know you had it that long and didn’t ruin anything!!
@@KnightWheelsMedia At install the guy doing the work convinced me that the pinion AND transfer case needed to be at the same angles for proper installation. That’s true for a single driveshaft. But not for our dual setup. Lesson learned.
@@KnightWheelsMediabut did you do to the truck in the first place to got the shim wrong? I put a 3in bloc to front and 2in block diff drop. To level my taco2020. I didn’t see those shims and now my truck is rear high. And I feel vibrating on my steering . Help please
@slv_car_refinisher6864 yeah I did the work (in a separate video) and used that video to confirm my mistake. I believe only certain years/trims of Tacomas had the shims. In your case, might need to try carrier bearing drop or add in 1 degree of shim for each inch of lift. Also if it’s a 4x4, first make sure it isn’t the needle bearing. Drive until you feel the vibration & shift into 4HI. If the vibration goes away, it’s a needle bearing issue & you need to do an ECGS bushing to fix it.
The EGS bearing. Is the main reason I only lift 1 inch in the front. I did a carrier swap as well. But before I reversed my shimmed (blocks). I just left it dropped. No vibration I had it up in mph a few times since. Everything is good
Thanks! You got me second guessing myself if I installed it wrong too lol. I kept trying to remind myself short side of AAL and thin side of shim toward front.
Haha yeah that's the worst part. I know which directions shims go, I just didn't realize they were shims lol just thought it was a spacer that was even on both sides
I have asked this question to other channels and still no answer, so let’s see your guess. My Tacoma is a 2019 SR5 stock, got it brand new. When I come to a stop with or without using my brakes there is a vibration between 15-25 mph. It is not major but it is annoying. They took my truck back and had it checked, the loner they gave me was a new 2019 TRD model and it is the same issue. They told they fixed it by replacing the rear axle. I drove it home and it seemed to be fixed until I slowed without braking and same issue took it back they gave me another loner same issue. They even had a technician come down to my dealership and could not understand what the issue was either but felt the vibration. So my question is have you heard of this or anyone on this channel have the same issue? Still not fixed but they gave me side steps my pick for free, bonus.
Hmm that's really weird. Not sure how they aren't able to find the issue. Sounds like a driveline issue to me. Can you tell if the vibration coming from the rear or front? Might just need to play around with shims or a cb drop kit to try to fix it.
@@KnightWheelsMedia it is really hard to tell but I want to say front. I’m with you on the driveline I’m leaning towards it too. The dealership and the Toyota technician that came down checked the driveline as well they said it was good. I was thinking also maybe the gear box, been thinking about switching. Thanks though!
I need to go out to my truck and check it now I've been chasing a vibe for a long time and I didn't even think to look at that. Any idea if there is a shim on a 14' ?
Not sure about the 2nd gen. It's pretty easy to see though if you go under the truck. No need to jack it up or take the wheel off or anything. Are you lifted at all?
@@livefreeandshred9818 gotcha I was gonna say maybe a needle bearing but usually that isn't an issue unless you go 3" or more Honestly you may need shims if you don't have them. Like a 1.5 or 2 degree shim
Came across your video to trouble shoot same issue. Although I have the long bed acces cab. From what I’ve read they don’t come with the shim. Do you think adding the shim would help drive line vibration? I have the carrier bearing spacer as well. Angle seemed good but shutters still from low range 0-30 and breaking.
If you have a 4x4 check that it isn't a needle bearing issue. If the vibration goes away when you're in 4x4 then it's needle bearing. Otherwise, it's recommended to do 1 degree of shim for each inch of lift you have.
@@KnightWheelsMedia yeah I've been readin on forums that ubolts like to stretch when u torque them and should never re use , but I'm thinking should be fine I'll just make to inspect them before installing again hope shims help
Hey knighttacoma my tires are going bald and I intend to replace them soon. What tires are you running and are you happy with them? Most of my offroading involves mud. I'd love to catch a trip with yall some time.
Nope still on stock UCAs. Typically UCAs are only required for 3"+ lift but I'm 2" However, aftermarket UCAs would help smooth out the ride a bit I've heard
@@jonathannguyen1844 you're gonna love it! I have a one year review video for the Eibach kit coming out within the next few weeks. I just haven't gotten around to editing lol super busy & moving this week so I have a lot going on
Yes mine was coming from the rear. If it's coming from the front and your truck is 4x4, it may be your needle bearing which you'll want to replace with an ECGS bushing. You can test it by throwing the truck in 4x4. If the sound/vibration goes away when in 4WD, it's likely the needle bearing issue.
I previously tried the CB drop but it didn't do anything. Flipping the stock shims to the correct direction like I did in this video fixed it, so I didn't need to install aftermarket shims.
One thing to remember our two drive shaft system means the pinion angle has to point up! I also have the carrier bearing drop. But the axle pivot that the shims or tapered blocks provide is essential
I just had my center bearing and rear u-joints replaced in my 2005 Tacoma prerunner TRD sport package and now I have vibration at dead stop. Any suggestion how to fix it? Thanks
Not sure it's weird that it vibrates while stopped. Maybe check the torque on the U bolts? If you got it done at a shop, I'd say take it back and ask them about it
@@KnightWheelsMedia It’s developed into that. I added a carrier bearing drop without change. The suspension shop wants to do a diff drop and go from there. What a pain. I think it’s the needle bearing.
@behindenemylines let me know if you find a resolution, I have the same issue with a 2.5" lift. I put it in 4wd and it goes away, but sounds like it's coming from the mid to rear though
They are two ways of doing the same thing. You may need a combination of both. There are a couple of threads on TacomaWorld talking about how to get the right angles for your lift.
Anyone know what the code is for these stock shims? Had a shop install my AAL while I was o of town and it also vibes; checked underneath and they installed it without the shims.
What year is your truck? It seems the 2020+ don't have the shims according to some of the other commenters on this video. It may be the case that you just need to add some shims or do a cb drop. Look up Tacoma Shims. Most people recommend doing 1 degree per inch of lift (2" lift, go with 2 degree shims)
@@KnightWheelsMedia 2018. I’m just gonna start plugging and playing around until I hammer it out. I only have vibes at 25-27. Accel and decel, same issue though, feels like I can feel the tired turning.
@@stephenviggiano1610 If you have a 4x4 see if the vibration is still there when you engage 4x4. If it goes away, then it's likely the needle bearing gone bad and you'll wanna replace with the ECGS bushing. Also note that if you try the 4x4 thing on a road, only go in a straight line with 4x4 engaged or you could mess up the system/bind the front axles
Anybody knows if those shims are on the 2020 2021 taco off road? Worked on mine. And i don't have that shim. I have another paper thin shim. Just like on the other leafs.
Weird so it isn't on the stock leaf pack for the 2020+ Tacomas? I wonder if Toyota fixed it. When you say paper thin shim, are you referring to the metal plates between each leaf in the pack?
So weird. I didn't know the 2020+ didn't have them. For your vibration, look up "Tacoma needle bearing vibration" if you have a 4x4.. could be that. Usually putting the truck in 4x4 will make the vibration go away & that's how you know it's the needle bearing. If not, try the tires but it could be from the lift still. You may need to do a 2 degree shim or the CB drop kit to fix it. Hope that helps!
@@KnightWheelsMedia thanks. I did the carrier bearing spacer just for good measure. Dont like the way they balanced my stock wheels. Have some RRW wheels headed here and gonna re balance. If that doesnt fix it i will try something else but it feels like a tire outta balance
A few others have commented that as well. What package is your Tacoma? I wonder if they're only on the TRD Off Road/Pro versions maybe. If not, they might have just redesigned slightly for 2020+ and removed the shims.
The shims in the video are stock with the truck. I bought aftermarket shims thinking I needed them but never got around to putting them in. Then I found out the stock ones were backwards haha
@@KnightWheelsMedia oh okay sorry I was confused. Recently installed progressive add a leaf but I didn’t use the stock shims as I saw it wasn’t needed from what I researched. But I was contemplating using the stock ones like you did.
