MY CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE WITH AN ISRAELI BEST FRIEND In 1981 age 6, I traveled back from Otukpo Benue state with my parents and immediate elder brother Chukwudi. My other 4 siblings were in boarding school so I and Chukwudi were stuck with my parents until we could find a place to live I and school in Lagos. My dad had to leave for Lagos in a hurry so we lodged in Federal Palace hotel Victoria Island for 7 good months. That was were I met my first Lagos best friend named Hashiem from Israel. We were age mates and his parents were military contractors. (well that was what my dad told us) I had the most fun of my childhood in that hotel because of him. We were often trapped in the elevator together. The first time was the scariest thing ever when NEPA took light suddenly and the lift stopped inbetween the 3rd and 4th floors and after forcing the slide doors slightly open we both burst into loud cries and tears for fear that we were going to fall off and die or something. The power came back on again after about 5 minutes and the lift continued downwards to the basement were we already made friends with the cooks and stewards who consoled us and adviced us to never use the lifts again without our folks. Well, little did they realize that our day can never be complete without toying with those elevators. We even enter separate elevators to see who gets out first at our agreed exit floor number. This was the first of over a dozen times we were stuck in the elevators to the point that hotel management had to come report us to our parents. Many fun experiences with that kid. I think Israelis have a thing with Nigerians. There wasn't any white-black racial thing going on like I witnessed with other white folks and their kids in the hotel. Other whites wouldn't allow their kids come close to me and my brother. Hasshiem's parents were so loving and pleasant to be with. In fact, Hasshiem's mom played the role of my parents because almost everyday, my folks would go out to town in search of a good place to live in Lagos. Hasshiem's mom would always make sandwiches anytime we go to the pool. And Hashiem himself actually taught me how to swim and till this day, I always remember him whenever I swim in any pool anywhere. Wish I could reconnect with him again someday though!
