Hello Everyone! My SunJoe Reel Mower might be killed! I caught the reel on the edge of my patio. It's making a horrible banging noise and I'm afraid it's toast.
If this happens to you or you hit a nail, stick, or piece of mulch this video shows you how you can get your SunJoe Reel Mower back up and running as good as new with a little elbow grease and patience.
After we get it straightened out we do an intense backlapping of the reel and bedknife to put the finishing touches on the mower to get it back in serviceable order.

I joined the club! I got into a hurry and accidentally backed up into the crest of my concrete driveway (two sloped slabs on an "A" angle). It completely stopped the reel lol. Thanks for the ideas on this! I was able to use a crescent wrench to bend it back a little but I needed a file to get it down to the point of back lapping it. This video has saved me at least 1-2 more trips to Home Depot 😂

Fantastic video. I’ve spent 3 hours on 2 different occasions grinding the blade. Never thought to bend the blade back first. Would’ve saved me a lot of time. I’m waiting for you to do a video of a nice, heavy back striping roller!

Thanks! Glad you found it useful. Currently I am using a Toro flex for the bulk of the cutting and have relegated the SJ to small areas and touch up work. I'm pretty sure others have done rear roller mods though!

Mower is great, thanks for this video. Only area it’s struggling to cut is the edges by my sidewalk. Cuts amazing for the price. Usually use my rotary first and then this at 1” for that Bermuda rug look

Had this happen and took the same steps! I use to have a GM1000 but yard was too small so sold. Obviously the SunJoe isnt built as well.

Awesome! Problem solving minds think alike 👍👍👍. The good news is for the price of a gm1000 (depending on how good a deal one gets) you could purchase a new SunJoe once a year for a while hahaha

Yes, unfortunately the reel can be a bit fragile. With some careful work it can be straitened 👍

Hi Thomas, I think it's possible as there are users cutting bluegrass and fescue up north. The catch is no matter what grass type best results are going to happen when the grass is cut often. During fast growth times not using growth regulator I can be cutting 2-3!times a week. If I'm remembering correctly zoysia isn't as fast growing as Bermuda. But.. if your lawn is thick then cutting more often will be easier on the mower and grass. Hope this helps 👍

Is running the motor with lapping compound have the same effect as backlapping?

Hi Syd, thanks for the interest. Unfortunately, in order to do the backlapping properly the reel has to run backwards. I guess it could be possible to reverse the leads on the motor and run it backwards but I didn't investigate that option. It's also an advantage to have the ability to adjust the speed if necessary which is why I chose to use a drill.

With the hassle of removing the wheels and everything. I was wondering if just putting gringing compound and run the motor will still sharpen the reel

Yeah it's some work but running the motor in as normal with compound would definitely dull the blade.

Wonder if u could replace reel with a better quality manual push reel. If there is any that size or better

Certainly anything is possible with enough work and engineering. The whole mower quality is lightweight so adding a better reel would probably mean upgrading the motor also. 👍

Agreed! I would like to purchase another. It appears that there are some other companies selling similar designs. Looks like Scotts and Yard force. Can't verify personally though. Good luck!

Hey jason, how the sunjoe? Have u had an incident where the reel got bent outward a little when a wood got suck? I have this i reel blade portion where it still knocking even after a reel backlap
