I Miss When Games Still Had Exploitable Skill Based Movement Mechanics

If it wasn't for skill based movement I dont think I would have played PC games past 2007. Airstrafing is incredible. id Tech 3 is an incredible piece of software.
We got GoldSrc & Source + IW4 engine that were all modified in their own ways but they all benefited from the wishdir quake exploit that accelerates you when you airstrafe with good mouse movement.
I could just go offline for hours and just strafe around. Nothing beats that. So depressing how bad new games are, lack of skill gaps, everything designed to be as easy as possible, any skill based exploit gets removed, no mod tools. Like man... just the maps people used to make that relied on the game having good movement were incredible. Going onto a CS:S mg server in 2009 with 30+ people and people are talking about the maps they have made, and then the admin puts it on the server and everyone plays it and it was incredible. So much has been lost. People today who start on new games have no idea how good everything used to be.

i could not agree more... the sole reason why i dont have fun with modern games is just the lack of movement and graphics manipulation. i played so much team fortress 2 and never could switch to any other game becuase it allowed for users to have so much control over movement, which just doesnt exist in modern games. if i were a game dev, i would try my best to replicate the EXACT movement mechanics and gravity. theres really nothing better than quake 1's movement.

TF2 was the first game I ever pre-ordered. That was such a good era, when so many people just played Source games. CS:S, TF2, DOD:S, L4D1... When I think of TF2 I always think of my first experiences on that game, which was when the game was simple with no skins or anything. Just people on 2fort having a good time. If I was a dev I'd want a team of like 20 people maybe and we all focus on the movement first. Before anything else is made the movement has to be good. I want it to be exactly how it works in Quake with the wishdir exploit that accelerates you when you strafe. Then I would want the mouse movement to feel as good as it does in Cod4 which uses a modified id Tech3 engine. Good player movement combined with good mouse movement would be incredible on a new game engine, I'd want to release it for free as well and give them mod tools so people today would be able to see how good something can be.

The hard truth, most of the multiplayer video games today are just so competitively focused that the devs forgot the reason why video games existed: it is to have fun. It's a shame we will never have the same experience again.

Yeah...this has been a problem for me for so long now. I think games that have the 2007 style graphics are more enjoyable, not just because all the mechanics are way better but because it actually looks like a game. So many games now focus on having simulator like graphics, I dont really care for it tbh. I'd rather have 700fps and everything be smooth and its on a good game engine etc.

Never done a full speedrun, so no pb. I have messed around with the starting areas, like I practiced the Vortigaunt boost with a save a decent amount of times and did the box boost and got a bit further in, but I guess I just stopped doing it. If I was ever going to speedrun any game it would definitely be a Valve game though just because of the movement and how much experience I have with movement on Source games, so I would definitely have the skillset to do it on a GoldSrc game as well + the length of HL1 I find is a good length for a run too.
