In this video, I show the steps I took in order to change my BMW i8 from a stock setup to one where you can see the engine displayed. This project took about 7 months from idea, to design and implementation. From carbon fiber skinning, to installing laminated glass, to performing upholstery, I accomplished many firsts. I made a lot of mistakes long the way and had to change my strategy for this project. In the end, the BMW i8 now has an engine you can see without having to disassemble components in the trunk. You can hear the engine a little more, as well. I hope you enjoy this video.

Not my cup of tea, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. By contrast, in my 1981 M1, the glorious 3.5L six was in plain sight and you could see it over your shoulder while driving...at night, the headers were glowing red! The M1 had poor ergonomics (essentially lifted from the 1978 320i) where my elbow would hit the bulkhead when engaging 1-3-5th gears because of the shift pattern. That aside, the M1 should have guided BMW when creating the i8. Just one man's opinion...

You added weight rather than removing it, but I think you just want to get a good top down picture of a Ferrari Boxer 12 motor, print it as a decal and mold/shape it slightly 3D and then and attach it under the glass from top cover you made (which looked great - Naugahyde is easy to work with). Now it won't look like you have a mini-cooper motor in their. Or go older with 4 double barrel Weber carbs in there with metal trim ring accents.

Pat, I am a 2015 i-8 owner and I’d love to know if there are any kits to have the doors open automatically with your key? Also Great videos. I have a love hate relationship with my car even though it’s been perfect.

Thanks! There are aftermarket door openers out there that some people have told me about, asking if they could install them. I don't know if it's possible because both the door and the body in that area are carbon fiber. You'd have to cut the carbon fiber to make room, and you would have introduced a problem where stress on that part of the carbon would result in a crack developing. So, I would personally avoid trying it.

You seem very proud of yourself when installing it on the car and thats all that matters. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but who cares as long as you love it and more importantly learned a new craft. I think it looks really cool....with the carbon fiber airbox its going to take it to the next level!

Thank you for the kind words. I was very worried that I wouldn't be able to make this project a reality. Perfectionism stopped me many times. I think that was the biggest accomplishment in this: Just getting it done and being OK with it. I'll be working on that carbon air box in the coming months, along with covering the flap that covers the trunk area with the excess pleather I have. I want to try to hand sew stitching into it. More stuff to learn.

Just saw this video, you need to add a BMW logo on the engine cover. I was actually looking for some one to do it on an i8 as it was done on a Cayman. Don't have an i8 but looking for one, used. Great video.

Thanks! I agree. I'm probably going to use the new BMW logo design that just went public to create the logo using my vinyl cutter and apply it to the top of the cover. If I don't like it, it's easy to remove.

Cool project. Would have been interesting to see some strip LED lights along the edge of the glass cover. Also, maybe a dark blue or gray color to the cover of the air filter to the side, to distinguish it from the engine....

Pat, just watching this in late 2022. Very cool modification and, WOW, what a job you did. That was a labor of love. I have a 2019 i8 Roadster. Would be cool to lift the trunk lid and see something like this, but I don't think I have the skill and patience you have demonstrated with this project. Awesome that your wife helped you with the project as well.

I appreciate the effort that went into this project and the result speaks for itself, but the main point of the i8 was to have a good car without focussing on the engine. This kind of ruins that part of the car, where the engine "didnt matter".

Oh wow thats such a cool mod. You did well!! You have a new sub from New Zealand 😊. BTW now that you've been using it for awhile since this video was done, did you face any issues with heat, maybe fitment or things that you didn't anticipate that came about cause of the mod? Really tempted to attempt this depending on your experience.

Thank you! I've had no issues with the mod. It does get hot, but there have been no problems. I would do it again exactly the same way if I was building a new one. I overengineered this to be fully capable and it's impressed me. However, I would make the hole in the leather wrapped cover smaller and send off the engine cover and airbox cover for professional carbon fiber work (and am considering that right now). The glass is 12"x24" so you just have to make your cuts and build your frame to support that.

I agree that would be cool. The next step is to get that to talk to all the other components of the car. Folks who have been considering an engine swap have not been able to come up with a way to make it work. I'd love to see a V6 in this car as a minimum. But I'm not willing to spend the price of a Lambo Huracan to perform this work.

Pat! Your videos are so informative! I’m definitely gonna implement your modifications & fixes when I start fixing up our salvaged i8 soon! Question: there’s often an issue i8 owners have with water leaking in the car causing possible water damage but is that a general misalignment issue some people experience or what?? 2) idk if it’s me but your i8 feels slightly bigger right? 😂 3) i forget your i8 with the 2 backseats is it the 2015 model? Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words. I'm only familiar with water leaking in the boot in the back and getting moisture into the electronics on the right side of the boot, behind the close out panel. That's the active sound module and it causes crackling in the speakers when it's wet. I don't know how water gets in there, however. I'm unfamiliar with any other water intrusion in the i8. Yes, I have the coupe so it has the rear seats, but other than that, it has the same general exterior dimensions.

Many have asked about swapping to a larger engine. Anything is possible with enough money and innovation. You'd need a computer controller that can run the engine and also tell the i8 that it's a functioning 3 cylinder, first. Then you'd have to modify the car to fit the engine, transmission, drive lines, etc. By the time you were done, you could probably afford an Aventador SVJ.

I get no reflections. It is forward enough in the trunk area compared to off we put stuff in the back of the trunk.

very well done. A real cool affect would be to add some blue LED lighting that is indirect and creates a blue glow inside your engine compartment. You would have it connected to switch to where you can turn it off to where it wouldn’t be a distraction when driving.

Thanks! I purchased two strips of blue LED lights and a small Lithium Ion battery pack to power them, and a wireless remote to turn them on and off, but I haven't installed it yet.

It might be possible if a substantial amount of the body and frame were removed to make room. There is not much room between the existing parts of the drivettrain. Then, getting the engine to work with the existing modules may be an issue. If the computer modules don't like how the engine and battery operated motor are working, it may never drive

Still the engine is not shown, just the top cover. I would just skip the cover and cut out a polycarbonate glass with no frame but with a surrounding gasket. All those multi layer covers is not necessary if you are used to a front engined car, it's like sleeping with 10 pillows. 🏎️💨

not ever fabricating something before in my life, I felt like I needed additional factors of safety so I didn't end up with problems. Looking back, could have done it differently, but this was a test case just to see if it could be done.

Pat, Have you looked into doing Carbon Fiber on your dash? I think that I have seen the kits go for about $3,500. Have you found a place that sells them at a discount?

I haven't considered doing this as the carbon fiber that comes from BMW is the dry carbon style. If you can find them used or from another supplier, good luck. I could send pieces out for carbon fiber skinning but then I wonder if I should make it the same as my steering wheel which has the blue silver strands in it. Then I think it's too much bling. Ultimately, I chose to leave it.
