In this video I make a start on two projects, with some fabric kindly given to me by the wonderful Humphries and Begg. I have admired their unusual designs for a long time on Instagram - I bought my Granddaughter Agnes one of their funky playsuits a few years back - so when they offered the chance to make something in their fabric, I was delighted to be chosen. If you’ve watched this channel for a while now, you will know that I am not very confident at making clothes - but I am having a lot of fun learning!
It really is the support from my lovely Patrons that allows me to keep the sofa cushions plump and the plates of cake and pots of tea plentiful on The Lime Green Sofa and so for that I am very grateful! You can join them there for the price of a coffee or a craft magazine and watch the content back to the start of 2019! Look in the feature 'Collections' to find what you are looking for!
/ thelasthomelyhouse
Over on my website you will find much more! Here you can shop for some of the things I use in my craft room at The Last Homely House and sign up for the monthly newsletter.
thelasthomelyh...
My daughter Martha and her partner Adam have recently made a beautiful new set of cards for my shop, inspired by all the garden birds that come to visit me in The Last Homely Garden - if you fancy a set - thelasthomelyh...
The music in this video was chosen from Epidemic Sound and is called Toner.
There is always so much going on here and there is more behind the scenes over on Instagram - kateatthelasthomelyhouse.
Thank you so much for watching!
Love
Kate

TIPS from seamstress, since you asked! 1. Read the instructions all the way through before you start 2. Remember sewing a coat is just a series of small steps like anything else, take it one step at a time and you will do fabulous!☺

Wise words! I designed a jacket at college, which my tutor chose to be part of my collection. It ended up having 72 individual parts! I must have wanted my head reading, but I did make it, and it was certainly worth all the effort.

Do a muslin of the coat for you. Cut it all out and baste sew it. Then you can see size issues and construction issues. Yes. Pain in the ASS to do a muslin and soooooo worth it. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

My husband's grandmother was a wonderful seamstress. She never followed a pattern...lol At 94 yrs young she made a wedding dress from a picture and it was beautiful! I love your ability to to go from one project to another. You are an incredible multi talented person😊

My mum is also an excellent seamstress. She says older patterns are better. Modern patterns are confusing and she says most of the time it's just easier to sew without a pattern anyway. She used to sell clothes at the local market to make extra money. Excellent knitter too.

Hi Kate, I was watching your video earlier today and saw you were starting a jacket for yourself from Paper Cut patterns. My ears pricked up, my eyes got bigger, said to my husband, " look at that, Kate has a paper cut pattern." They are based in my home town , Nelson New Zealand. How exciting. Go well with the sewing Kate both for yrself and for Agnes. Am looking forward to seeing uou both in yr finished garments. Love the green wool fabric you chose to go with the chillis, will look totally stunning.

Kate…The fabrics are lovely and so cheery as well. I have made a few articles of clothing from patterns I printed myself. One used 55 sheets of paper. Yikes 😮 With all that work to put together and cutout I wanted them to be patterns that could be reused. Thus once I decided on the size I traced it onto tissue paper and used that for my pattern, leaving the original in tact for perhaps a future garment in a different size. You will live wearing what you’ve made and so will Agnes❤ Maryann

I agree with the lady that suggested you make the coat out of inexpensive fabric so that you can get the sizing correct before using the special fabric. Both my grandmothers were seamstresses and produced amazing garments. I’m blessed that I inherited their love of sewing, however, I didn’t inherit their talent. I watched as you made your housecoat and love it!! There is no doubt that you will successfully produce two lovely coats!! Bless you for sharing!

I think these are going to be lovely. My tip would be to trace your pattern onto swiss tracing paper in your size. Swiss tracing paper is great because it behaves a bit like fabric; so you can tack it together, fit it and make adjustments, then cut your fabric from that. That preserves your printed paper version so you dont need to reprint if want to make it in another size. You will also know how the pieces go together before you sew. Thank you for your videos, they are really inspiring and its so nice to spend time with you in this way. Penny.

Kate I have some thoughts for you 1. For your coat; you could really make any custom length you want ,its not a hard adjustment on the pattern. 2. I think the gorgeous Humphries and Begg fabric for your coat would be lovely on the outside as a band on the bottom of the coat ( any size you want ) I'm thinking design wise maybe 6-10 inches. This fabric would also make beautiful cuffs on the sleeves, which you could just add at the end. 3. As you were doing the video I was looking at this plain green fabric you bought for the coat and It looks absolutely beautiful with the fabric pieces you have on the board right now. So that's something to think about for another project. 4. I like this hand embroidery you might be doing on the coat, it will be beautiful, and will show up so nicely on that green fabric. 4. ENJOY take your time and your probably a much better seamstress than you give yourself credit for. 😊❤😊❤

Hi, Kate. Not sure where you are in your project now, but I have made a lot of clothing (4 daughters needing dresses and such). You can make a practice coat from old sheets and such, just to become familiar with the pattern before cutting the good fabric. This also lets you know if you need to alter any of the pieces for a better fit for you. You can also copy the pattern onto tissue paper so that the original can be kept intact in case you need to alter something. Good luck. I know you can do this.😊

If you line the coat with the printed fabric, when you try to put it on, and you're wearing a jumper or sweatshirt, you'll find it difficult to actually get on. That's why a shiny fabric is usually used to line jackets and coats.

Hello, Kate! What a coincidence! I have just returned from a quilting retreat in Pennsylvania, where I purchased fabric-from a local quilt shop-for a Swing Coat. I’m going to quilt with a fusible fleece and make it reversible as well. As another subscriber suggested, It is important to take the time to make a muslin version. You really just need to mock up the basic shell in order to determine the appropriate size and length of the body and sleeves. I used to make my own blazers when I was in high school in the late 60s/early 70s. That was a long time ago, but I’m comfortable with the construction process. I’m looking forward to sharing the result when my friends and I get together for next year’s retreat. I am really looking forward to following your journey with your 2 coats. The fabrics are gorgeous and far more colourful than mine. I’ll be busy this summer with a fundraiser quilt for my local hospice and camping plans, so I won’t be able to start this project until after our Thanksgiving in October. As always, Thank you and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦

OK, a tip that can be frustrating - make at least the outside of the adult coat first in muslin or scrap fabric, then you can check/adjust the sizing and adapt the pattern pieces to what worked in the muslin. Don't forget to allow for ease (extra inches) since you'll be wearing it over other garments, even maybe sweaters. Good luck!

Hello Kate, I've made the Nova coat and jacket 4 times now and it looks complicated but it's not and all makes sense as you put it together. Just enjoy the process if you can, you always seem to 😍 It's just nerve wracking when you make a new design. It's a very roomy design but lovely and snuggly to wear. I use a cross body bag to keep mine closed 😊 If you opened your file in Adobe Acrobat, you could go to the layers tab, select the size you require, or sizes if you're grading between sizes. This makes it so much easier when cutting out. Another bonus of the PDF pattern x

Yes muslin is a great idea, and I thought, watch your grain lines for the cutting. Also if they don’t tell you where to use lengthwise grain, and where to use crosswise grain, you will have a chance to think that through, and maybe ask a garment-sewing friend. That wool is wonderful. If you are going to do some topstitching, and choosing the buttons, would you like to use a brighter green, (yellow, even to the color of your favorite mustard?) to make the wool look even richer? Looking forward to what you make. 🏄‍♂️🌱🍀✨

As always, you are a brave lady. It's been about 45 years since I tackled sewing like that. Don't think I'd be up to it these days. It will be fun seeing your progress.

Kate, Of course you chose the beautiful bolt of green fabric - and I'm so glad you did. The colorful and creative lining will compliment it beautifully. Little Agnes is a fortunate and much loved granddaughter. Cheering for you from across the pond (Michigan) - we all know you can do it and I suspect you will enjoy every phase of it.

Ooooh, I’m so exited Kate! I started out as a seamstress and it’s a skill you never lose. My one tip would be to always cut the sleeves a bit longer than is stated - I find they tend to be too short (but it could be me with long arms!!!!!)🤣😂🤣 Also, start thinking about pockets from the very start - we all know how important they are! Final thought - since this is going to be solid on the outside, you can take some of that gorgeous inside fabric and add it do odd places on the outside of your jacket. I just made a jacket and I put a square of bright colours on the top back, and then took two strips (about 2" wide) and put them on the end of the sleeves - running up the sleeve - only about 4" (10cm) or so but adds a pop of colour in an unexpected place on your wrist! Can't wait to see this come to life - I'll have to check out their fabric! If you have any suggestions for great places for unusual fabric, I'd love it if you could share them!!! Thank you as always - now I'm excited to sew another jacket (always need them in Northumberland, don't we? Especially this "summer".... haha). Love to all, including cat Rita.xxx
