Man I'm the complete opposite, but I think the world benefits from having both kinds of people. I've never really had ambitions beyond surviving with the bare minimum (that is fulfilling in and of itself to me), because my happiness is directly tied to how much free time I have. I like to play video games with someone I love, and appreciate things made by others in this world. Sometimes I review the games I play, or write comments such as this one, but that's about as creative as I like to get on a daily basis. That's not to say I'm immune to the Squidward routine depression meme, but if I ever feel that way, then I just play something else. Work and ambition makes me anxious and sad. But for some people it's the opposite, and that's great. Though, I'm not exactly "normal". The part about eating the same food everyday? I do that. But I have hypersensitivity, so simple things like cereals, toasts and pasta have always tasted extremely good to me. Every time. I've eaten those things everyday and I'm almost in my 30s, it never gets old. Bread in particular will always make me very happy. Mac and cheese too. I've often thought that if someone can't be happy with what they have, they will ultimately never be happy, but I think "what you have" is different for each person. For ambitious and creative people, that "high score chase" is what they want to have. That's what makes them happy. So if they stop trying to challenge themselves, they effectively lose what they had. Interesting stuff.

It’s the “your decompress/fun activity becomes the job” and you don’t see them as fun anymore and it’s work on your RU-vid. I’m former theatre kid myself, I’ve gone back to community theatre now in my 30s and even jumped on some small bit/extras roles once a year or so. It’s that artistic challenge and thrill of it. Completely understand that, and I hope you sincerely pursue it and keep that passion for it alive, as an escape! Watched you for years and love your channel, hands down my favorite creator. Josh should be careful with the possible shift into acting as a way to "challenge himself artistically". Acting can be fun when you're just starting or when you're the top dog. While I grasp you just want to do something else with your life, I want to impress upon you how just how privileged it is to be able to say "I'm making a great living doing this but what am I getting out of it other than money?" Most of the world goes to work in jobs they hate just to pay the bills because their choices otherwise are slim. And there's a million people who only wishes they had the pretty face and British accent that would give them an advantage in being successful on Twitch/RU-vid so they could stream for a living and make it. Pursue your dreams. But grasp that your phrasing is honestly soul-crushing for many of your audience when you say that.

Something similar is why I hope that I never lose the opportunity to take more classes. Yeah it is stressful going into take tests and especially at the end of semesters wrapping up assignments and prepping for the final, but sitting down to learn something I probably didn't know before is a great feeling. It is not the same feeling from just watching videos or doing software based courses - it is way too easy to just view something and think I have the gist of it and software grading lacks variety in feedback. Now if I could just find a well paying job that could harness knowing a bit about a lot of things...

If you don't feel "challenged" despite the comfort, and if that's creating a certain amount of disharmony, there's a very real possibility that ignoring said disharmony will just make it worse, which will in turn impact the things that keep you comfortable. So while you have the option to both be comfortable and experiment with a new challenge, you may as well because that way you can figure out if the thing you want to do is really the thing you want to do, without any added stress.

Not wrong. The man's not wrong at all. When Covid jumped off, I was out of work for 3 months, and at first, I was absolutely loving life!...but it did get boring after about a month. When I finally went back to work, I damn near cried. As much as people may say that they hate their job, deep down, no matter what you're doing, it's that sense of purpose, I guess. I have also noticed that i've started exploring hobbies more, branching out interests, meeting new people, overcoming things I never really bothered to do before, and it's fulfilling! Things I thought of before that were relaxing, have turned into things I just do regularly. I'm not relaxed, i'm not working hard, i'm just doing them. You know when i'm most relaxed? When i'm at work, whether it be my actual job or making content myself. Crazy how growing up works, and finding new challenges is ironically a challenge in itself. Love you, Josh! I hope you find what truly makes you happy and you can freely enjoy doing what you love most!

Not that I didn't enjoy spending time with my family, getting to be part of kid's school activities, having more time to game recently than I have since I was 16, but I totally get what he means. I don't hate the type of work I do, can honestly say I enjoy the challenges, but it's still weird to be looking forward to going back to it for more than just a monetary reason. Though admittedly that's a relief in itself. Severance pay went a long way, but it's certainly not a long term option (not that it should be either).

I have all kinds of free time, but I am not doing a lot of nothing that entire time. I grill, I do chores, I clean, i continue to exercise, I get stuff done (I live by a “play can’t happen until the work is done mentality”). As a homeowner, and with a family, I never have that much time with nothing to do. Ngl, I wasn't even expecting an answer at the time, but when he responded I thought "mad respect for taking time to read this." And wanted to share my appreciation. I always found that writing can be challenging, but I found drawing, cycling, gym, animation or making a model castle/ship to be even more challenging. So to me rotating these hobbies/habits helped me push each of them forward whenever I could dedicate some time doing so. So even if I make a career out of writing, I would not want to stop the other hobbies I got for they are a part of what helps me push myself in writing more interesting stories.

Currently recovering from a burn-out, and I think it's good for people to know that if you take off three weeks or a month from work/school and you're doing great, then maybe it's time to evaluate your time spent. You can have fun during work, and you can have fun during education, but it needs to be something that you would be able to enjoy doing in your free time. And then when you stop for three weeks or a month, you'll find that you're way more inclined to feel the way Josh does.

Tldr. I am very rich and I don't have to worry about my basic needs anymore, therefore I am seeking personal fulfilment. I am also discovering that being rich does not equal happiness, but it does get your mind off of thinking about bills all the time. That is great, good on you man.

Some people are just built different, I LOVED covid lock downs. I very much enjoyed my like year of just hunkering down at home, doing fuck all productive stuff, and just playing video games all day. If I was rich and didn't have to work, I for sure would retire and never work again

The last time I had 4 weeks off, I needed one to recover from stress, one to realize I am allowed to chill down, and then it was two awesome weeks. Most people around me feel similar, they barely can enjoy 2 weeks because they are so exhausted. We are Germans.

"Once you give someone everything they need to live and survive, and thrive if you will, then you get to see who they actually are based on what they choose to do in their free time" sounds a lot of like people on social media who get upset about the wildest things, their life has lost a bit of meaning and so they look for something new to do and it just happens to be weird social media things or outrage or whatever it should be.

I have an idea Josh why don't you combine your two passions into one product, you can make a channel where you put skits and short films where you perform as an actor or even better, start experimenting in directing and writing, or even better start doing stand up comedy in local pubs and post it on youtube , comedy would suit you very well because your acting and dry humor is top notch, you will combine all your passions at once.

The online stuff can maybe be a safety net for when things didn't go well out there. Of course momentum needed to be rebuilt, but then that's a new challenge itself. I didn't know Josh started out during Covid. To reach this amount of numbers for such a short amount of time, it's impressive to say the least. I think he has answers in him already.

I lost 3 years of my life to autoimmune disorder. Almost killed me 3 times. Was in pain the whole time. The purpose of life is to be comfortable. The reason you are uncomfortable with being comfortable is an adaptation that is making you uneasy about your survival odds. Some part of your brain is concerned your complacency is going to get you killed. So you need to feel productive, instead of comfortable. But if you have TRULY been uncomfortable, you'll get the value of comfort. Consume art, eat food. That's what life is for, because one day you won't be able to. It could be when you die, it could be in your early 20s, or it could be the day you were born. Anywhere between the beginning and end of life you could lose the ability to enjoy being alive, and sometimes you don't even die when you do. People just aren't good at dealing with that complacency discomfort, and so they squander their capacity to be comfortable to get rid of that. Because they aren't comfortable with comfort. Basically, people are insane contradictory meat machines that aren't actually intended to live fulfilling lives, our biology has been evolutionarily shaped not to be happy, but to survive and procreate and that's all. It's our job to find happiness on our own. There isn't actually a universal answer to it. Trauma has shaped my opinion, as it does everyone who experiences hardships. We all have individual insanities to wrestle with on our way there. Any tight blanket statements and observations are of hollow meaning because they simply don't apply to everyone. Humans are messy.

Mangaka Gosho Aoyama got started making a manga of a gentleman thief with magical powers called the Kaitou Kid ,but it didn’t get enough traction and he had to start over. He then made a manga of something much more grounded in reality, a detective serial but with the twist that the genius detective had been scientagically aged down to a child. This manga was Detective Conan and is pretty famous now, but once Mr. Aoyama was well off enough he DID pursue his original story again, it even became an anime itself, so I think it did okay. I like to think that there are stories, projects and goals within all of us that we just need to do. Regardless of if it makes financial sense, or even social sense with the expectation of others. I press on because I keep in mind that if I don’t make this thing, no one else probably will and thus it will never have been created and to me that’s sad.

I think it’s important to impart on maybe the more impressionable viewers, that satisfaction doesn’t come from artificial adversity. Intentionally making your life more difficult will be hollow. It needs to be real risk and real adversity to overcome.

Aww getting older and trying to find meaning in the world. Authentic moments are what I feel like you're talking about. Not that you aren't authentic in your youtube channel, but your acting as you say is where you find your "meaning" perhaps. Appreciate these honest videos/clips a lot!
