I also moved to Washington and found so many things to love there but ultimately, it wasn't for me. It was beautiful but too constant, too expensive, and I found the people less friendly then my home state of Illinois. My husband and I moved back to IL, but we never regretted moving out there because it was such a great learning experience and adventure. We might not put down permanent roots here in IL either but I love the adventure and it's a great plan to explore lots of different places to see where your spirit meshes best. Best of luck!

I feel the same way. And now so many people have and are moving here. It’s just too crowded, even up here in Stanwood (Lake Goodwin) where I live. It used to be so quiet, so beautiful and it felt very rural. Not anymore. It’s sad because I love the trees, the greenery, the rain and the smell of fresh soil, but I too hate the politics. I’ve been here 29 years now and it saddens me to no end that we’ve lost so much of what this place was. I hope you find peace and joy wherever you end up🌸

I've lived in western Washington my whole life - I definitely agree with you about the cost of living being a down side to the area. But I disagree with you about there being no fall. It could be because this is the only place I've really experienced the season, but personally, it's my favorite of the year. We still have the evergreen trees, but the deciduous ones all have such wonderful colors in the fall. There is reprieve from the summer heat, a new season of drizzly rain after a few months of drought, the grasses and other small plants come back to life with that new rain, and the air just smells different - fresh yet earthy.
@-lovecassy_333
@-lovecassy_333 2 года назад
Maybe it was the area she lived in? Not all areas grow or develop the same. In more earthy areas, the fall season really thrives and you can even find toadstools and various types of herbs that wouldn’t grow as easily or at all as in other areas.

Have you ever considered to jump into the tiny house movement? You could live in a lovely custom made cottage on wheels and put it anywhere you like or could afford. I've seen many people around the world especially in Usa, is living in tiny houses because of the high costs of living, they end up being free, of mortgage, some of them even live off the grid, saving lots of money. I totally see you living in a green witch tiny house!! Love and light💜

I was going to suggest the same idea! There are plenty of good channel here on RU-vid and I'm addicted to those video right in these days. There are tiny houses SO beautiful and especially the movable ones are lovely! Moreover, since we're talking about affordable livestyles, why not dig into off-grid, earthships, and frugal/zero waste movements? I'm dipping my nose into those now, because I'm Italian and with the consequences of big economical problems in my family (due to my dad) and I love the idea of find a home for "cheap" to renovate in the future and have lifestyle as sustainable as I can. Obviously many things here are not or just partially doable but..why not take a piace here and there and put them together?

I made a big move going from bustling urban to edge-of-the-world rural and it was surprisingly wonderful. But now, 12 years later, things have changed: my health, my friends have moved, venues closed, etc. So I am looking. I realize a person can find magical places but it may be only for a while since both the place and person change. And that's okay...part of the adventure.

If you've never been there, you might want to spend a few weeks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula & Lake Superior. I'm moving back there after living all over for the last 11 years. It's rural, winters are brutal & last much longer than elsewhere, but it's also magickal. Go there in Summer for a few years and you won't want to leave. You seem pretty self-sufficient and resourceful... that's what it takes to live in the U.P. Lots of people only stay for the Summer and live elsewhere in Winter... nice if you can do that, but the locals respect people who are resilient and can stay through Spring & eventually become a local. Pasties (a meat & potato hand pie) are a local cuisine... there are recipes online if you want to try that first. 🙂

You have the massive Columbia river, hundreds of lakes, and abundant life. You have that hard reset of the seasons, with fairly mild winters and the cost of living is much lower than that of the west coast. :) You might find your song there. :)

I moved to the San Juan islands from California three years’ ago, and for me the biggest shock was adjusting to seasonal changes. It feels the opposite of “constant” to me, but wildly different from Seattle. I also have health issues that make heat impossible, and the islands are fabulous for someone like me who struggles with extreme temperatures. It absolutely feels like “fall” to me right now. We don’t have the dramatic colors, but I’m still reeling from how quickly the days shorten, the sky darkens, the temperature drops, the rain and wind have now started, and my horses are busy growing their winter fur. Financially, my comparison is California, and so it feels almost ridiculously inexpensive. Island life does raise prices, but we compensate by growing a lot of our own food and planning better for what to get when we go to the mainland. The other thing I’ve never experienced until the islands is an informal barter and favors culture. That’s probably saved us many thousands of dollars here already. But I had to live in many many places in the world before finding the one that feels right. It’s always worth continuing to explore. You’ll know when you know 💁‍♀️.

I too am having trouble understanding what is meant by not having fall here in Washington. Is it because we have so many conifers (Evergreen state)? We have lots of oaks and maples too. We definitely have 4 seasons, although 3 of them are wet, and none of them are extreme (this summer was a bit of an exception and may be the way of the future). Fall has definitely arrived in PNW as of this weekend, my son is asking when we can turn on the furnace, but I am trying to hold out until October.

As a Washington Native who has lived outside my state, I have not found a place I enjoy better, perhaps it's the familiar part of it. I guess maybe I am also used to the cost of living here and after living in Hawaii it doesn't seem as bad lol. Speaking of Hawaii, living there I learned I did not like perpetual summer like I thought I would. For you it may seem like there is no fall, for me, I definetly feel that change, but it is maybe more subtle than what you are used to. The leaves are just starting to turn and soon will be a glow of red, orange and green. I was super happy to find that the plantain grows in abundance in my yard, I also have chamomile as well, it's been fun to discover them after all this time. My figs will be ripe soon and I am looking forward to making some fig jam this year.

It is it's own kind of beautiful - the big trees, rocky coastline, everything about it felt so perfect for me. But it was like, timing wasn't right? Or perhaps I became homesick for the Appalachian mountains. Regardless, I came home after just 6 months there and stayed in my North Carolina mountain town for some time until recently moving to a city (for work). Northern West Virginia is beautiful, if you want to check it out. Not too far from childhood home, but West Virginia is so different from Virginia. The hills and mountains are so gorgeous and different but I think it will still strike you as home with all the wildlife that is the same. Food is WAY cheap and if you choose to live in the rural areas outside the college towns you may be happy with the people. All the seasons are the same as virginia but the mountains tend to dull the weather. I just have to brag about my home state and hope you consider. Love you.

Yes! I absolutely love West Virginia. It is stunning. It’s not for those who want ultra modern fast paced life but that’s exactly why I love it here. Affordable and friendly neighbors. Plus the abundance of natural herbs. My yard is full of plantain, dandelion, red clover, and many more beneficial plants.

@@jensummer3549 I live in the southern parts of WV and yeah I forage most of my herbs myself. I hope she checks it out because at least where I am we don't get as severe of weather since the mountains keep us in. I can see how some people get claustrophobic here, with all the hills surrounding us, but personally I find them beautiful and comforting. Wonderful seeing so many west virginians in this chain.

@@xerrias I completely agree with you. I live down in a “holler”, as the locals call it, completely surrounded by trees. It is so comforting. I’m glad to hear from a fellow West Virginian.

Im from nys and looking to leave for many reasons. You're young and will find the place that says home to you. The great thing about going home to VA is family and knowing the land will always embrace you. 😊 NYS is great for a variety of reasons, including foliage, so is WA, Maine, Vermont, Tennessee, etc. So many states so many good things. You'll find your happy space. You'll know it in your heart.

I love the mystymornings, I never knew that is what plantain looked like I see it everywhere it has a mild bitter taste, I used to sometimes pick chew on it when I was a child out of curiosity. After your video on making your charm, I realize that over the past few months I have been seeing flash visuals of myself taking the lavender and mint I have growing digging out my rarely used (because I am terrible at it ) sewing machine making a small bag and putting in the lavender and mint (I have both chocolate and spearmint growing) so I did just that and have the tiny bag mildly wedged between my rearview mirror and roof in my car. I really need to pay more attention to those tiny flash messages I receive at times, I get them ignore them, but then something comes along like your video on your shaker jar that reminds me of it , it is almost like I am supposed to do it, but I don't hehe I probably sound like a person that is out there and that is ok. the one major thing about west coast like Washington and British Columbia, Canada is that fall- winter it has rain a fair amount of rain (they call i t the Wet coast) which is why it is so green. but once a person accepts this they see the beauty in it, the sound and feeling of water falling from the sky that is clean and has song. I hope you get to see the Harvest moon coming it in a couple of days.

We just moved our kids to Missouri near the Arkansas border. Gainsville Missouri actually. We chose it there because it is in a growing zone 7a. It gets a couple of months really hot and humid, usually July and August. But if you go up just a tad into zone 6 of Missouri it will be a little cooler but still, have the benefit of being in a healthy plant growing zone. To live there is much much cheaper. In the area of Jefferson City Missouri, it is a 6a which means you will get all four seasons. It is not an area of tornados or other scary things. The population is about 42,000 so it is big enough but not to big and you should be able to get work...although I am not sure what you do. My daughter grew up in Wyoming and has lived in Idaho for the last 9 years. They are absolutely loving Missouri! They bought a house on 9 acrers for only 69,000! You could find a place to rent easily for around $500. The area is very soothing on the soul. I see your struggle and thought this might give you food for thought. If you want to chat I am here or Facebook.

Have you ever been to New Hampshire? It’s the best of Virginia and wilderness. The people are friendly and I have made so many friends there. It’s beautiful and a very special place. The only thing that I don’t like is winters with too much snow. The lakes region is the most breathtaking place I have ever been - mountains surrounding beautiful lakes, lots of vegetation, and a connection to the landscape.

Everyone seems to have a suggestion for where you might enjoy next, so I want to toss one out, too. Northeast Ohio (Cleveland/Akron/Canton) is a great blend of the magic of city life and the tranquility of rural life. We have gorgeous parks with unique topography, but just a short drive north and you hit one of the Great Lakes, which live up to the moniker. It’s a very underrated place to live. We’re like the meeting point of all worlds here. Plus, still only a day’s drive from family when you feel the mountains calling you back. Just a thought to ponder. 😊
