My Grey Gap Year rolls into 2024 and I need your help! I have nothing booked for 2024 yet and I want you to suggest some awesome trips.
So will you help me?
Watch as I look back on My Grey Gap Year, sharing some of my travel highlights to date, and give you a sneak peek in some videos that are soon to be released.
I also promised that I’d talk about the piece of art, on my bookcase, at the back of the lounge and I do that in this video too.
So thank you for joining me on My Grey Gap Year.
Phil

Hi Phil, I’d recommend Africa, there’s so much to see. A few suggestions but there are loads more. Start in Cape Town, go to Kruger Game Park, there’s Victoria Falls in Zambia, beaches of Zanzibar, obviously the pyramids in Egypt, and if you’re feeling energetic go trek mountain gorillas in Uganda or hike up Kilimanjaro. You’ll get a few videos out of that lot.

Hi Phil, nice review of the year. I may be biased (due to family there) but I'd recommend South Africa.. One for the northern hemisphere's colder months, no jet lag (as almost due south) and plenty to see and do, without even going to the globally famous Cape Town or Kruger.

Totally agree, we flew down to Cape Town about 10 years ago to see friends and family, then flew 2 Hours a week later to Johannesburg and also drove to Durban and Sun City. South Africa for me was one of the best Countries to visit.

A combination of both. Go on an international trip but go through how it was booked, how it helps your status, how people can also find a cheap trip like that with examples. Then show us how the trip went. Whatever you decide, I look forward to it :-)

Phil. Great videos to date. Please do one on a BA Tier Point run to Sofia and include the complete process (finding flights, booking, boarding cards, etc). Agree the Royal Yacht Britannia is a hidden gem and worth a trip to Edinburgh on its own.

Thank you for your suggestion, I would like to try a Sophia back to back, I think that would be an interesting video. Sophia as a tier point destination doesn't sit well in my renewal window, prices can be high in July / August (my year end is July), but perhaps a run for the fun of it in November could be interesting. Sofia (mentioned below, it's terrific), Tirana (I've got this booked in Spring so can't yet say how good it'll be). You will love Qatar business - not sure where you're going. I think a mixure of trip reviews and how you find good TP deals works well. Also spending Avios for good value - I know you've covered this but it's not easy finding "value" deals. Love the art work - very unusual.

I too, would like to see more African countries. Apart from Egypt, Morocco and Tanzania, I have not been anywhere else. Part of the reasons are costs and safety. Would love tips on how to break these barriers, to the less expensive and more safer destinations on the continent.

Thanks for your comment and your support, safety is my main concern for travelling in Africa, us UK government recommends all but essential travel to many of them. In my previous life we had a customer in Sokoto, Nigeria who needed some training on the software. They usually flew to the UK but they couldn't get funding for flights, so they asked us to go to them. I told my boss I would only go there if I had kidnap insurance. In the end we agreed to run the training course in Abuja but they weren't able to transfer the money so it got cancelled (phew!)

Right, so in terms of suggestions. It really should come to what you fancy doing and the experience you are after. For instance, myself and the husbears are heading to Toronto and Montreal in September to tick Niagra falls from the bucket list. Want something closer, depending on which team you pitch for, Lisbon is a great destination and you can stay at an all men bears resort with plenty of action 😈😅. Whatever you decide, just enjoy it and I look forward to your future videos and adventures 👍

Hi Phil, I was one of the people who joined around the time of the Gold Tier video. I was just getting into collecting points and getting value from frequent flyer programs myself. So it was really useful. However I've watched most if not all of the other videos on your channel and enjoyed them all. Something about your style and the way you travel I just really enjoy. My suggestions & advice would be threefold: 1. Do what you want. Of course take suggestions on destinations. But with regards to the channel, make it your own, keep doing it in your style. There's probably hundreds of people out there who started channels like yours that never got to 1,000 subscribers. We're all here because of you and your style. So don't lose your identity, don't try to become something your not or make something you don't want to make. 2. I suggest you make a few of your tier points/miles videos and have them in reserve. Your videos are pretty much weekly, and although I'd love to watch 2 a week, the RU-vid algorithm will reward you for consistency. Maybe have a set day of the week for videos to release, and if you have a few in reserve, you can always hit that target. 3. As for destinations, for me it's got to be big-ticket destinations in the east. India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore. Expensive (sorry), but in the same breath I challenge you to use every trick in the book to keep the £ outlay down. Keep it up, really looking forward to your Qatar video, they're my go to for longhaul to the East. Cheers

@@mygreygapyear thanks for your equally kind words. I’ve got an 8 leg itinerary coming up in April, including 4 Qatar economy flights. I enjoyed your review posted yesterday, although a whole row to yourself is unlikely to ever disappoint! Have you got any tips/advice for getting complimentary upgrades? Guess it’s the million dollar question. I got one on my first itinerary with Qatar but still no idea why me!
@mygreygapyear
@mygreygapyear 5 месяцев назад
@GeorgeBot7 For upgrades, I think that it's probably status and the amount of money you spend with them compared to the other passengers on any given day. I don't think BA IT have the capability to write an algorithm like that, but this is what will happen eventually. Well done on getting a Qatar upgrade, they refused to let me pay for one even though there were seats available.

Hi, Phil - I really enjoy the videos. I think it's worth doing a combination of the two types of travel video. Only having tier point offers and status runs, etc. would get a little boring after awhile. However, they are great tips that can apply to a lot of travellers regardless of destination, whereas the destination videos rely on the viewer wanting to travel to the place being covered (or at least interested enough to watch it). Looking at how you maximised your value when booking the trip or nabbed a great deal would also be interesting as the lessons can be adapted or applied to other travellers going to other places. In terms of destinations or trips that I'd be really interested in watching, I've long wanted to do Singapore to Bangkok via Kuala Lumpur by train (including overnight train). It'd be interesting to see a video that covered a multi-week trip whereby you fly to Singapore, spend some time in the city state, travel to KL by train, spend a few nights there, and then travel onward to Bangkok, cover your time in and around the Thai capital and then your return flight to Heathrow. In terms of flights, if you wanted to stick with the OneWorld alliance, you could travel with BA from LHR to SIN and Qatar from BKK to LHR via DOH. Alternatively, you could mix it up by either travelling with Singapore to the city state and/or with EVA (my recommendation) or Thai direct from BKK to LHR. For information on train routes between Singapore and Bangkok, I'd recommend this website: www.seat61.com/Malaysia.htm#Singapore_-_Kuala_Lumpur_-_Penang_-_Bangkok.

Happy New Year Phil! Looking forward to seeing your trips over 2024. I enjoy your tips on chasing status, the journey experience and your reviews of where you’ve visited. I’m quite new here, so apologies if I’ve missed past trips, but how about South Africa, west coast USA and more unusual European weekends. Also wondered if you will be using BA Holidays for the double tier points at all this year? Happy Travels ✈️
@mygreygapyear

Thanks for your suggestions and Happy New Year! And please, I don't want anyone to feel the need to apologise on this channel, ever, for anything (unless it's me apologising) 😊. I want this to be a happy place for nice people. South Africa is getting a lot of votes, so I might be doing that imminently but I am intrigued by an unusual European weekend, do you have specific suggestions? If you were planning one, where would you go? Would the Baltic states count I wonder? I am planning to renew my Gold status after the 8th of July but I haven't decided exactly how I'm going to do the renewal. I think the Abu Dhabi to Jakarta run will be in the mix. Possibly something on Cathay Pacific. European prices are high around this time of year though, so I'm not sure if I need to wait until September / October to do those trips. I'll be making a video about the planning phase soon(ish). Thanks again for your excellent suggestions, Phil

@@mygreygapyear I do think the Baltic countries could count for unusual weekends. My middle son is on a quest to visit every country in the world and recently visited Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia for 2 days each and from the photos, he managed to see a lot and it looked wonderful. He even managed to go to International football games in Serbia and Bosnia very cheaply- he saw Ronaldo play for €9! His excursion from Dubrovnik to the Kravice Waterfalls and Mostar were a particular highlight- stunning. Something we’ve put on our list. Look forward to seeing your travels!

Happy New Year Phil. Thanks for your excellent content which I have found most useful. Following on from my 2023 Club World Reward return to Rio with Companion voucher I have just recently bagged with my latest Companion voucher two Club Suite Reward returns to Cape Town in 2024 with 15 days to occupy myself in South Africa. Any thoughts on the extension of the Double Tier points offer from BA Holidays beyond 31/12/24 as to date a paid for long haul Caribbean BA holiday provides most of my tier points to get and keep Silver status. I like your style of explaining the process of finding and funding Reward flights so a step by step booking of a multi leg Qatar reward flight would be on my wish list for 2024 .

Phil. Your videos are entertaining and informative. I am of a similar opinion as @noameier46. My gripe would be, that most of the time, by the time the video's come out the deals you get are no longer available. Your video with the spread sheet is a prime example. between you checking it all out, booking it, then making the video to show what you'd found and booked for your tierpoint runs, there was a £400+ difference. that was the Birmingham to Bangkok trip, staying in Ibis Pattaya. I'm not complaining and I do do my own searches, but you have a better in depth knowledge than most of us. Again, loved that spread sheet in the BA Gold Run video and love all you've done so far. Good luck in 2024. Steve .C. YNWA.

Hi Phil. Be good if you could use your nifty spreadsheet skills and start with all the 80 tier point destinations then have a column showing the average cost of each business class return flight then another column detailing convenient departure and arrival times ( I don’t want flights that depart and arrive at ridiculously early or late times on both legs). Finally a column that ranks the ease of public transport to the centre of the main travel destination eg the town - important as I don’t want to hire a car or be faced with a 20 mile taxi journey. You could then compile a list of the top 5 filtered as above. This could form the basis of you doing a travel Vlog of these top 5.
@mygreygapyear
@mygreygapyear 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for your suggestion, I do have a spreadsheet with European Short Haul Plus (80TP from London). I used this to identify which destinations could be tacked onto a run from a UK provincial airport, like Edinburgh. The issue with creating the complete spreadsheet you've suggested is getting the data. If I can access the data (I doubt Google will permit me access, but Jack's Flight Club might have it) then I could get it into spreadsheet form, but if I have to manually access the data then that is a lot of data points to manually collect. Also, the data changes regularly over time, prices will be based on demand, time of year and so on. During October half term Sophia might be quite good value but Marrakech is probably quite expensive. Also, departures also change over time. I found this last year when I was researching a fictional tier point run, the Sophia departure changed time based on season and then (I think) another destination changed airport (from Heathrow to Gatwick). And now I'm going to get really geeky and tell you that some of the data won't actually fit well in a spreadsheet due to normalization issues, this means repeating fields, which will happen if you have multiple departures to a destination in the day (prices can be averaged, but a time of day can't be in this instance, because it would lose all meaning). Databases are my thing. If you can get me the data I can give you the information you need 😊 Actually, I think this comment is now the notes for an upcoming video, Jack's flight club, you have an email incoming Thanks Phil

@@mygreygapyear Thanks for your detailed response. I was promoted by one of your travel vlogs where I think you were on a short tier run and you were arriving late and missed a connecting flight - I think you took the opportunity to cancel the BA holiday - that in itself was good to know how smoothly that cancellation went. I am older and I thought I wouldn’t want to experience such stress. I looked at Sophia but as I need to connect from Glasgow at Heathrow the timings weren’t great - despite it being good value. I eventually did 5 nights in Malta connecting at Gatwick outwards and Heathrow homeward. Such a fantastic trip with great local bus transport. It gave me 480 tier points which when added to my already points was enough for Silver status😀x
@mygreygapyear
@mygreygapyear 6 месяцев назад
Congrats on hitting silver. Your other flights will be that bit nicer now. You can break up your flight with an overnight stop at Heathrow, so you'd book Glasgow to Sophia as a single trip (giving your the 480 points if it's a qualifying holiday) but you'd fly to London in the evening and then out from London the next morning. It would add a hotel cost (Premier Inn anybody? Or The Thistle via the Pods) but would make the trip easier because you wouldn't miss your connection. You could short check your suitcase if you wanted to, so you'd have your checked bag with you if you wanted. If you didn't your suitcase could sit at the airport. Good luck , let me know how you get on with your status chase. Phil

Happy New Year! Going on the Viking Ship theme you might want to go Moorhead in Minnesota (it's actually next to Fargo in North Dakota) to visit the Hjemkomst Center - bizarrely there's a replica Viking Ship that a guy in the US built in the 80s and his family sailed all the way across the Atlantic. I was in Fargo moving towards my aim of visiting all 50 states and stumbled across this museum and ship. Although actually governed by Denmark, it has a unique 'not quite Europe' feel. These should probably be on any bucket list: Barra (to land on the beach) Lukla (obviously, and probably quite popular) Saint Martin (for Maho Beach) Flight and lounge blogs are ten-a-penny out there on RU-vid. But there aren't many "how to" videos. Things like: Ease of connections - perhaps showing the route and complexity (or not) of connecting at key airports, plus whether they can be done airside Using alternative lounges with OneWorld gold - for example, at LAX, if you're travelling on American (even if only doing a short domestic flight) you can walk (airside) to the Tom Bradley and use the Qantas First lounge, which is excellent. Plus you can use Flagship First check-in there, which is amazing. DFW is another example with better lounges which have airside transfers available. And, of course, LHR terminal 3. How to construct tier point runs is always interesting - detailed notes on the research needed and how you managed to book them, plus a vlog of the run itself.

If you have a goal to continue growing the channel, status, avios, tier points and status is the way to go. If your goal is to just travel and report, then going back to your original video plan it is :)

Great video. Ironically for me New Years Day is very significant for me….32 years ago having never been further than Corfu (and a very nervous flyer) driving back from Blackpool decided to visit cousin…. In Tasmania !….3 weeks later was on 4 week trip to Australia ….for the next 8 years travelled round the world 7 times ! ….Places I’d go back and see ? Vancouver/Whistler….. Queenstown/South Island New Zealand……Darwin and coach across to Alice Springs…..India (only ever been to Delhi…..but without doubt such an experience)

Thanks for your kind comments, that's very interesting, from not flying to 7 round the world trips. I would love to know how you conquered your fears. Darwin to Adelaide in Australia on the Ghan train is on my bucket list, never thought of using the bus though. Thanks.

@@mygreygapyear How I conquered flying ? Short answer is I haven’t! Longer answer is just fly regularly - I have learnt the fear of flying is much worse than the flight itself !….and you have to get rid of pent up anxiety. Best trick offered on a flight from Milan….box full of those mini hand wipes packets they have. The act of opening and the using hand wipes takes your mind off flying but not taxiing enough to make yourself feel dizzy/sick…. You don’t smell too great at the end !!!

@@mygreygapyear ps re. The Ghan….yes do the Ghan or Indian Pacific …..but there is something about overnight coach in the Outback. Long road with a tiny kink on the horizon …..and then another long road with a kink on the horizon !….and then arriving at petrol station in the morning in the middle of absolutely nowhere (a hut, weather vane and tumbleweed…literally). You’ll think it’s rubbish at the time but 30 years on it’s one of my most vivid memories

Sounds like the backpacking year I did, but we went in on a car. We drove from Adelaide to Perth which has a 146km straight road (just googled the length). I like the idea of a bus trip but I wonder if I'm getting too old for that now 😊 Well done on managing your fear of flying though. Like all irrational fears it sounds silly to anyone who hasn't experienced it, but I have my own irrational fears so I can imagine how difficult it must be. Thanks again, Phil

Scandinavia and the Baltic states... use Finnair .A350 toHelsinki. Helsinki is amazing then ferry to Tallin? Go up into the arctic citcle ? Fly to Tromdheim and get Hurtigruten ferry to Tromso (2nts) Antigua? Better than Barbados...

Thanks for your suggestions Richard. The Baltics sound fascinating, they're on the list. Antigua vs Barbados is not a fight I'm going to go anywhere near 😊, everyone has their favourite Island. I met someone in London who's son plays football for the Anguilla national squad, guess which island he thought was the best in the Caribbean?

Happy new year! I’ve loved the flight reviews and the BA status/points videos too. Keep doing what you’re doing! I’m not the best person to give advice on travel destinations as I’m just a massive avgeek, so the flights often dictate where I’ll go. If you fancy some fun flights that can make use of your OW status, I recommend: -Finnair out of T3 (their biz class is fab! They have a regional subsidiary too that use ATRs and E190s -Iberia widebodies and CRJs - BA (sun-air) dornier 328JET - some good lounge crawl opportunities at LAX/JFK etc (not done myself yet) Thanks for the content, look forward to seeing the next trip reports!!

Thank you for your suggestions, a lounge crawl at LA sounds fun. We do differ in that I'm not an AV Geek (although its getting that way 😊) I have always been about the travel, but I'm not sure they make very good videos (become boring holiday slides videos too easily). Thanks again, Phil

@@mygreygapyear I have done the 328 yeah. It’s so much fun!! 4750 avios and £20 too- a fantastic redemption considering cash fares are often £300+ one way! Cool little flight. You can pair it with an overnight flying out of Heathrow in the evening for a T3 lounge crawl then home on the 328, or do the morning 328 flight and back to Heathrow (or maybe even LCY) the same day. Hope this helps! :)
