Hey friends, I need your help! I am having tomato troubles in the garden and I would love some advice on diagnosing my problem. I thought for sure it was herbicide poisoning, but now I don't know, I'm also thinking maybe curly top virus is a possibility. Have you dealt with this in your garden or know someone who has? I'd very much appreciate any advice or input!

Soak a tea bag of black tea over night in Water the tomato with it. It'll be fine in 24 hours. You'll find it will turn a healthier green too. Make sure its caffeinated tea. This happened to me many years back & production was terrible Tea always does the job, its the only fertilizer I use because it makes the plant look so healthy.

When you had them in you house did you have any issues with white flies or aphids? They are the normal vector insects for viruses. If not, any auxin herbicide such as 2,4 D or dicamba doesn't have to come into direct contact with you plants from a spray. Those herbicide will volatilize, meaning it can go into vapor form, anywhere for 12 to 72 hours post application and those vapors will be moved by wind currents and effect plants such as tomato's. The best thing you can do is contact your county agriculture agent office and have someone come out to take a closer look.

Some of my plants new growth look curly and all mangled up like that but yes mine have been growing out of in once the leaves start to grow and mature, it’s seems to be only new growth on my plants to,🤷🏻‍♂️, you should probably have a soil test done for micro and macro nutrients and check PH would be my next step, my soil is very acidic so it may be related to that 🤷🏻‍♂️

I noticed my tomatoes also curling up, but it has started from the bottom leaves. I googled it, and it said the top reason is wind damage, and yes, we have had 3-4 very windy days. Hoping my plants will survive, if not I will start over with new plants.

It turned out to be wind damage and my tomatoes recovered quickly and are doing fine!

Are they producing fruit? I would assume so because they are flowering. Tomato plants have various ways of protecting themselves from heat and draught. I have had "Leaf Curl" from my tomatoes for 3 years. I have a garden on clay and have a problem with watering the tomatoes.

To me, it definitely looks like herbicide damage. Talk to Jess at roots and refuge.

Can you get new starts & plant with bagged potting soil in large containers or earth bags? Then you might be able to ascertain if it’s your soil/compost or herbicide drift. I live in central Kansas surrounded by farmers & I’ve had my entire garden poisoned by herbicide drift. My tomatoes last year were horrible. I’m planting twice as many this year & praying for the best. I have diversified my plantings tho. Some in raised beds, some in ground & some in containers. Good luck. Last year my plants closest to my neighbors pasture were the worst (he usually tells me when he’s spraying weeds). Last year, I think his son sprayed & he didn’t tell me so I could cover my plants. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Now im wondering...i have beefsteak tomatoes. A couple of weeks ago we all of a sudden got over run by aphids. I quickly mixed up dish soap and water amd sprayed. A couple of weeks later i sprayed again. I noticed one of my plants still has the curled up looking leaves. The rest are recovering nicely

Mine looked like this when I planted them in my horse compost. Even though it sat 6-8 years, I think it was grazon damage. They are ok when I grow in store bought soil.

Not completely, but looked better after a long while. Have you been in this place for a long time or could someone have sprayed there in last decade?

I have not had this problem, but I have dealt with infestations of leaf hoppers, and they carry disease to plants. I would treat for leaf hoppers which seem to spread the curly top virus. My leaf hopper infestation isnt as bad this year as in the past. I did have other plants attacked by a virus from leaf hoppers.

What do you use to amend your soil in the spring? Also what types of farms are you surrounded by?
@6Heartson6Acres
@6Heartson6Acres Месяц назад
I amend with compost that we make from our cows manure. We buy our hay from family, and the field it's cut from is not sprayed. We are surrounded by dairy and beef farms.

When I started hardening off my pitiful looking tomato plants, I noticed some of mine looked like that also. I started my seeds way too early and they got way too big before I could get them in the ground. So mine was not exposed to any chemicals from the ground was doing this before they went to the garden. Hoping for the best.

How far can an herbicide carry on the wind? Or even a virus? Think about when we in the United States had red sunsets after the dust storm from Chinas Red Desert got into the Jetstream. Check your plants starting at 3:AM until shortly after sun up wherever you are. Might find a bug. Also, like others have said, do an extensive soil analysis. While you're at it check your water.

I’m having the same problem with two of mine. It’s not pesticide exposure as I live in the city and don’t have any neighbors who spray for weeds. I don’t think it’s viral as I have two plants in grow bags right next to the raised bed the two funky ones are in, and they are perfectly healthy. The curled plants are in a mix of coco coir, mushroom compost, and pearlite. The compost smelled a little sulphury, so I think there was some anaerobic respiration going on. The pH is neautral, and the other plants I planted in this medium seem fine (lettuce, spinach, zucchini), so I’m at a loss.

Many of mine are doing it too. I have found some green aphids on the bottom of mine... and some white fly eggs. I was thinking this was my problem. If you figure it out please share with me.😊

Try giving them some charcoal, it’s what’s recommended if we swallow poison and are sick. Also I bought pepper seeds and having and issue with just those peppers, so I wonder about the health of the mother plant the seeds came from. I also seen a video where they soaked egg shells in apple cider vinegar then mixed that diluted with water in a spray bottle gives minerals but I haven’t tried it yet but definitely would give them charcoal and some comfrey tea 😊🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 I hope they turn around!
@6Heartson6Acres
@6Heartson6Acres Месяц назад
I've heard of trying charcoal, but also heard that it completely depletes your soil of nutrition. I grew the plants all from seed, they were healthy and thriving before this happened!

That is what happened to ours. It was pesticides in the hay our cattle ate. Our compost was tainted.
@6Heartson6Acres
@6Heartson6Acres Месяц назад
From everything I've read, they can last in compost for 3 years - and for the last 3 years we've been getting hay from someone we know doesn't spray. Maybe it is just lasting longer? I am starting a new compost pile, but I think going forward, I won't be using cow manure in my gardens.

@@6Heartson6Acres as long as they keep spraying it will never get better. Most big-ag herbicides can take a decade or more to break down from what I know. Growing certain crops and mushrooms can help mine it out of the soil, but you need to dispose of them off property for it to help. Not an expert on that though.
