Those poor sticklebacks when you put the pike in the bucket, must of thought what a day I’m having 🤣

Ranatra linearis - Water Stick Insect is the beastie you found, great job on rescue mission.

Fortunately you are one of those few people that will run the extra mile to do something like this. I cannot understand why there are not more people helping those poor fish. Thanks for your effort it’s so good to see that some people really care about their environment.

The "weird bug" was a water stick insect - Ranatra linearis. An underwater predator, it uses its front legs to catch its prey. Its tail acts as a kind of 'snorkel', so it can breathe in the water. Usually only recorded in the South and Midlands, so I'm sure someone will take note of your location.

Much respect for doing this. I have carried out a few fish rescues, boy does it make you feel good. Sadly it was so difficult to get other anglers to chip in. A massive well done from me😊

11:46 You're correct! It's a Water Stick Insect (Ranatra linearis) also known as Water Scorpions. They sit on underwater foilage and prey on insects and small fish wich they grab with their long jaw/pincers. Super cool to see such a big one, I've only seen half the size in Sweden!
