Somehow, Sean Durkin's 2023 wrestling epic The Iron Claw (Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Lily James) failed to receive just one nomination at The Golden Globes or the Academy Awards. Some people think this is a mistake -- what did you think of the film?
In this review and summary of the film, I discuss its merits and shortcomings. Please subscribe if that sounds like the kind of thing you're interested in (movies, not pro wrestling. At least until The Iron Claw 2 comes out).

Zac Efron deserves more respect. He could have gone the "teen idol" route and just coasted on his looks but instead he takes challenging, diverse roles to push the boundaries of the audience's expectation of him. Sure, there's a Baywatch here and there to pay the bills, but he has shown more range than most people expected of him in drama and comedy. He's not quite DiCaprio or Pattinson, but he sure isn't Van Dien or Lautner either.

The harsh truth of Professional Wrestling is just how cosmically hard it is to get on the road to even having a shot at becoming World Heavyweight Champion. If Pro Wrestling was a sheerly competitive sport it would only resort to physicality, but it's not. It's performative physicality, like being a stuntman, or daredevil. You have to be charismatic (be it as Heel or Face) the crowd has to like your character, or like how much they hate your character, and that's not just physicality or in-ring gimmicks, you have to be good at cutting a promo, meaning how well you can talk up and promote an upcoming match (something Kevin and Mike always struggled with, whereas David and Kerry were naturally gifted with). Then aside from making the crowds love you AND being good at working the ring, you also have to play the game behind the scenes with promoters and storyline writers. The Von Erich family had so much talent, but also so much ungodly bad luck. As a Texan and a pro wrestling fan it's beyond heartbreaking. The only good to come of it is the current success of Marshall and Ross Von Erich (Kevin's sons) and the minor success and eventual retirement of Lacey Von Erich (Kerry's Daughter), as well as this film which tells the story (albeit somewhat fictionalized) of this family's tragedy to shed some light on them.

The Iron Claw film was during the era of World Class Championship Wrestling. This was the territory of Fritz Von Erich and his sons. This was the era of Harley Race, Ric Flair, Bruiser Brody, Jerry Lawler, The Great Kabuki, Kamala, Tommy Rich, The Missing Link and The Fabulous Freebirds. Rest in Peace Texas Tornado. The Iron Claw film shows the hardships and tragedies of the Von Erich family. The film needed two more music montages in the first 45 minutes of the movie since the story dragged at the beginning, but it then picked up for the rest of the film. The only acting weak link in the film came from the actor who portrayed Ric Flair who was atrocious in the role. The next pro wrestling family that deserves a film is the Hart family from Canada. After all, Bret Hart has endured emotional heartbreak from losing those closest around him like Brian Pillman, The British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith, Jim Neidhart, his brother Owen Hart and very good friends like Rick Rude and Mr. Perfect. Bret was also screwed out of the World Title, went through a bad divorce and was retired by a bad kick from Bill Goldberg. This is during the era of World Class Championship Wrestling. This is the territory of Fritz Von Erich and his sons. This is the era of Harley Race, Ric Flair, Bruiser Brody, Jerry Lawler, Kamala, The Missing Link and The Fabulous Freebirds. Rest in Peace Texas Tornado. The Iron Claw film shows the hardships and tragedies of the Von Erich family.

A Bret Hart movie would be amazing. I think a story that focused on Brets loyalty to the WWF/WWE, and specifically Vince, and Vince not honoring the payments he was supposed to make to Bret's father for the acquisition of Stampede Wrestling, later on contributing to Owen Hart's death, and orchestrating the screwjob on Bret, it would make for an amazing story of a man who tried to be a loyal, hardworker, and was betrayed for it.

Great essay. One detail I'd clarify is that the Von Erichs aren't really the undisputed greatest family in pro wrestling. The Harts, the Funks, the Windham-Rotundas, and of course the Anoa'i family all saw more longevity and success in the business to name a few. All of those families have stories of tragic loss, early deaths (Owen Hart, Bray Wyatt, Dynamite Kid, Davey Boy Smith, Yokozuna, Umaga), and promising careers ending early (Bret Hart, Tyson Kidd) but in that regard none of them match the Von Erichs. Part of the Von Erichs' tragedy is that they had the potential to become the greatest family in pro wrestling history but never quite did.

I see some people in the comments giving you crap for discussing this movie without first being a pro-wrestling fan, and I'll just say, as someone who IS a wrestling fan, you did a good job at codifying and contextualizing your thoughts and feelings on the movie. I knew someone who was pilot, and anytime a movie depicted someone landing an airplane, he'd base his whole opinion on that movie solely on how accurately they depicted the piloting of the plane, regardless of how good or bad the rest of the movie was. It doesn't matter how succinctly you discussed this movie, there's going to be wrestling fans who are going to nitpick all the details of their special interest.

Kevin Von Erich after having seen the movie said that the one thing, he didn't like about it was the portrayal of his father Fritz. Kevin calls his father a loving and honorable man, and he blames the injuries and substance abuse for the death of most of his brothers. With the exception of David who died of an illness and his older brother Jack who had died due to accidental electrocution and drowning. Kevin understands that this is a film, and it needed an antagonist, but his father Fritz was not as bad as the film made him out to be.
@lanagievski1540

Fritz was arguably worse than what was portrayed here. Kevin doesn’t want to focus on the bad, which is his right, but Fritz was a bad guy.

Fritz also once pulled a gun on Kevin and told him that he "Didn't have the guts to die like his brothers did" I think Kevin comes from an olden mindset that makes it not want to talk bad about his father. Honestly the movie could've antagonized Fritz more.
@stonecoldku4161
@stonecoldku4161 5 месяцев назад
@@drewburke6371Fritz had terminal cancer at the time that he pulled the gun on Kevin. The cancer had spread to his brain, and he had been acting out and was delusional. Kevin talking about that day said that he could see his father considering what to do and in Kevin's mind he was saying "I'm not letting his cancer decide my life," and ran out of the house before Fritz did anything else. Kevin says that his father would've never had done that if not for the cancer. Listen we all don't know what was going on in that house or that family. I do believe that Kevin would have every right to hate/blame his father for what happened to his brothers and probably would if he believed that was the case. He is either a very forgiving person, or he truly doesn't blame his father for what happened.

@@stonecoldku4161 I wasn't aware of the brain cancer part, thank you for enlightening me. But with that said, Fritz Von Erich still took money that should've went to his sons, would remind them of who was and wasn't his favorite, making them compete for his favoritism, and would use the deaths of his wrestlers for storylines. Maybe two of his son's deaths can be contributed to accidents, but I don't think you have 3 of your 6 son's commit suicide, and you as a parent not be the common denominator. I'm not convinced Fritz was a good person.

David was a smart person who traveled different wrestling territories to understand the business better , Mike was a film and music person and was helping in producing music video style videos for tv , kerry was an Olympian turn wrestler , Chris Von Erich who's not in the film was a true fan of wrestling and wanted to be a wrestler his entire life. i'm writing all of this because every brother had a interesting life and deserves a spotlight as well. this movie was great but it would be better if it was an 6 to 9 episode show. and one more thing they really lighten up this movie because the tragedy is much much graphic. one line that stick to me that has been said by kevin is "i use to have 4 brothers now i'm not even a brother"

I think that's a valid criticism and certainly from a historical perspective it's really unfortunate, even if it felt dramatically necessary for the filmmakers to omit him.

0:32 "Who are, unquestionably, the most famous family in pro wrestling" That isn't even slightly correct. They may be the most famous wrestling family in Texas, Denton specifically, but not in all of wrestling

watch the actual Von Erichs matches, the movie capture only a fraction of the intensity and electricity those guys produced

I grew up watching pro wrestling throughout the 80's and 90's and loved the Von Erich's. I enjoyed the movie very much, but the 2 hour 10 min runtime doesn't do their story justice. I feel their story would've worked better as a limited series.
