I'm only kinda into the mechanical keyboard scene (don't have a mech. board yet), but the reason Cherry is considered the standard by some is because they held the original patent for the mechanical keyboard switch. That patent expired some time ago, so other companies have been able to iterate on the exact same technology. Some aim for a lower price, others aim for higher quality or better feel. Some accomplish all of those. Gateron and Kailh/Kaihua are generally well regarded for making switches with comparable prices and quality to Cherry, often better. The only major advantage of a standard Cherry switch is quality control, and even that does not go unmatched. (I hear Gateron's QC isn't as good, but I also hear that for their Zealios varieties specifically, it is as good. They seem to have shifted focus.) TL,DR: Thanks to healthy market competition, there are absolutely switches that you don't need to replace with Cherry.

@@notheotheralex6213 Cherry was definitely not the first patented keyboard switch, but, for some reason, overshadowed most other companies who had vastly superior products. It’s such a shame that alps, ibm, and others are no longer used

@Derek Kim Sorry, I meant to say "as we know it today," I'm not sure why I left that out. (Something to do with having to retype the whole comment after a misclick, maybe.) I am pretty sure "mechanical" (I _did_ specify mechanical, not all keyboard switches) is considered distinct from IBM's buckling spring switches (the model M had membrane after all), but yeah Alps fall pretty unambiguously under the mechanical umbrella. I totally forgot they existed, that's on me. (Side note: man... keyboard jargon is confusing. Nothing about rubber dome keyboards makes them not machines, but the line for "mechanical" is drawn to exclude them. It's harder to tell where the line is drawn when we can't use universal definitions.) (TL,DR/For the uninitiated spectators: the important things are that other companies can now make better use of Cherry's exact technology, but older competitors did exist -- they just had to use original designs, some of which did predate Cherry MX.)

@@asadavis9532 There isn't one. The current hotness is a manufacturer called JWK, that sells switches for approx $.20 more than cherry (if you go thru a western reseller; on the chinese market its about $.10 LESS than cherry), but with vastly superior tooling and materials.

Does the stick read as analog or digital? Would you be able to do a tilt attack in smash or is it full go all the time?

@@Walking_bandaid it's only an eight Direction digital stick. So there's no 16 directions or analog input for half prices

This seriously sounds exactly like my story the past few months. Really got into arcade due to the same reasons recently!

Did you do it? am considering it for games like Street Fighter 3 Third Strike on the Switch, at home

Seconding this, much better quality hardware, better casing, sturdier build quality overall, and doesn't slip at all whether you re playing on your lap or on a table.
