I watch several small trash businesses around here. One has a small duelie truck and boxed in dump bed with plywood. It’s a single operator. I don’t know what they charge. None of the services put liners in their trash containers. They do require we put our trash in bags. And I do put all of my trash in bags. Good luck and I will keep watching!!!!!

We had a local company who picked up our trash at our last house. The way he avoided can liners was informing all his customers that all trash had to be in bags. He wouldn’t dig out any loose trash from the can unless it was things that wouldn’t fit in a bag like cardboard etc. I didn’t mind because it made sense and seem like a reasonable request. Love the videos. Keep them up.

Good tip! I recently took it off and stored it in the garage. We are on the road so little I am wagering we will be fine without it with the tires so new. Freak blowout would sideline us for sure, but anything else and we should be close enough I can make it home for the spare. Might come back to bite me but there is another reason for it I will discuss in future videos (need the space for the lift I am getting).

A few ideas/suggestions: Set aside metal items and take them in for scrap. You can also offer free pickup of appliances as part of your service. You wouldn't think it would be much but a trailer full of scrap can be worth a decent amount. I would also see if there any options for cardboard recycling near you. Many places pay for cardboard and you could separate it out into your truck instead of throwing it in the trailer on the route. That would save you on trash tonnage as well. Good luck and hope things continue to go well for you!

Before starting or continuing a business, do a start up sheet with costs, a complete cash flow projection,, cost analysis, break even projection on each product, service,and budget for the business. Together these will give a clear picture of how the business should operate, true costs, profit margins you want, how much you should charge, etc. Google or a CPA can assist if you have questions.

I don't think you're accounting for the tire loses you're going to lose doing this kind of work. The nails and extra pieces of metal will just kill your tires from dumping all that. I lived on a landfill road one time and I replaced 10 sets of tires in 14 years and had so many patched and plugged that you wouldn't believe it. Stick with heavy duty a mud grips. They have taller and thicker tread and are less susceptible to getting cut and puncture wounds because it's what it's made for.

Only issue with a tipper is that it's going to tip in the same spot every time, which means he'll have to open the back end, climb in, rearrange trash, hop out, close back end. Eventually it'll get so full that he won't be able to climb in and walk around.

When you get more profitable and busy, they have new garbage truck that has an automatic hand that extends out from passenger side of vehicle and grab trash bin. Flips trash bin upside-down into dump truck and empty all the content and puts it back down on curb. You DON'T step out of dump truck, after the dump you move to next customer, rinse and repeat whole process. You won't have to buy liners for trash bin and you can complete more jobs faster.

Congrats on the new business my friend! I'm a huge garbage truck enthusiast and I think you'll do awesome! Here's some suggestions. Once you get a big enough route, think about getting a few rear loaders, some side loaders, and a couple front loaders. For rear loaders, you might want to look at the Autocar ACX Xpeditor with Heil DuraPack 5000 body. That's what my garbage company runs, and they're super reliable and work really well! For side loaders, go with Amrep, Labrie Automizer, or Heil Rapid Rail or Python, on either Autocar ACX, Peterbilt 520, or Mack LR. For front load, you could go with either Heil Half Pack, Amrep, or McNeilus, on either Autocar ACX, Peterbilt 520, or Mack. Just some ideas for you to think about!
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 8 дней назад
Thanks for the feedback! I won't have a route big enough to justify the $1-2M price tag of all those. The long term goal is to get an under CDL ASL once the business can support it (but I don't even know how many cans that will be. I am thinking 400 on the low end).

@joshuahill6153
@joshuahill6153 17 дней назад
You should really invest in an arm, or hydraulic lift for the bins so you can save time and effort expended per pick up. A simple swing arm would save so much time and effort, would also eliminate the need for bin liners which would ultimately save you time, money, effort. Have you tried making a saran wrap like box with teeth for your garbage bags? Where you can roll one out, clamp it and tear? You should also offer bin cleaning services for an extra monthly fee. E.G I'll come over for an extra 5 or so dollars a month and water pressure your bin clean from residue.
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 16 дней назад
As mentioned in the video, a tipper arm is 'hopefully' going to be a fact in the next week or two. I like your suggestion on the bags. I also like the bin cleaning idea, but the liners help keep the cans much cleaner. Maybe a service to offer outside my client base, but not right now.

To turn a trailer the direction you want, you have to turn the bottom of the steering wheel the direction you want the back of the trailer to go. Well, all in all the first day seemed to go well. Replacing the liners seem to be the way to go, and I know that you will come up with a way to speed up the tying of those liners. Are there any neighborhoods where you could park near the exit (or main road out of the community) at certain specific days/times, and have customers bring their trash to you already bagged? I’m sure some people would pay to just not have to go all the way into the dump and it could save you a bunch of driving and bagging. I’ve seen that done near certain vacation communities, near lakes, beaches etc.

I would suggest collecting commercial waste as a start up. More volume more profit but first you would need a Proper heavy vehicle say a Rear loader or Front loader you could approach big mobs and offer them a service for them if the demand is to much to keep up for them they sub contract you out and service their clients or just start with making your own clients. Problem with Municipal house hold contracts is not as great profit, it is a stable income but not the best for profiting because not only of all the costs running fleet of trucks and employees and maintenance and you are likely to get penalised by city hall if you delayed their service or missed a street or three and drivers milking it to make Overtime and budgets blown paying for incident / accidents on properties etc. Commercial is flexible in my opinion less stress full and more profit. As you said you had to pay for everything when mobs sign on contract for house hold Municipals they provide a fee for the fleet of trucks for the fuel and for the transportation of the waste the cost of dumping fee is towards city hall. Also perhaps focus on recycling collection service as recycling transfer stations ins USA may pay you for Bottles and cardboard, not sure if such exist of scheme in USA but Australia we are paid $95 Aussie dollars per tonne on recycle material from the recycling facility but you have to make sure recycles are not heavily contaminated or you lose that agreement with recycle facilities so say you throw a bin of recycles that are contaminated you take photo of the client bin of contaminates and send them 3 warnings or they start getting charged for contaminates as you will be losing money if you keep having contaminates in recycling services.

Going forward you should up the rate for new customers but have a customer referral incentives, where like they save money for x amount of weeks/months whatever when they get a certain number of neighbors to sign up, and then after their referral price period ends it goes back to the regular rate. Also what about leaving 4 bags underneath the liner you install? Then you only have to mess with getting liners out of the box once a month. 22:25 what he was saying was that he doesn't know what kind of equipment you have. They probably don't allow you to set a tear weight because people would lie and get a really heavy truck for their tare and then just switch to a normal one. They could for sure do a tear weight if they took a picture of your equipment so they'd know it's the same by just looking at your setup and the picture. But yeah people would for sure lie or use a different truck every time so they just rather you weigh every time. Where as with trash trucks they're always the same and you can't really change much on a trash truck that will change the weight a lot as they are one big unit. But yeah they probably have you weigh every time because people are always looking to pinch a few pennies and the best way to pinch pennies in the trash business is to rip off the dump!
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 4 дня назад
I suppose that makes sense. I am used to my truck and trailer being one of a kind so those kind of shenanigans aren't really possible but can see how allowing it on unmarked things could allow swapping.
@buddy4235
@buddy4235 4 дня назад
@@CopperCreekCuts Yeah a few bad apples ruin it for everyone else. Using a truck and trailer would allow for swapping or loading really heavy stuff in the bed of the truck when you weigh your tear and then taking it our for the rest. Where as with a trash truck it would be harder because they're one big unit and there's not really much you can do to a trash truck to dramatically reduce the weight. That's why he said "We don't know what kind of equipment you have" because people would switch stuff out. The best way to pinch pennies in a trash truck business is to scam the dump site. Cause all you're doing is picking up Trash and dumping it. You can't really not pick up someones trash.

Wow. I've never heard of a company providing liners, let alone relining the can with a new liner. That cost needs to be pushed onto the client. Maybe provide the bags once per month at the beginning of the month. Have you considered just placing the new liner over the rim of the can and putting the lid back on for the client to actually then properly line the can? It would speed you up. Maybe you are spending more money on liners and time than it would cost to wash out your truck bed every shift or figure out a way to line your truck bed instead. I don't think it's realistic to plan on having a clean truck bed when you are dealing with trash.

My current garbage company has side loader w/ toters for trash and a traditional packer thats hand laded for recycling. Its illegal to put cardboard in dump here

One thing to consider that a lot of folks are missing with the liners: Even if all trash is bagged, that doesn't mean there wouldn't be a scenario where I have to crawl down to the bottom of a stinky, juicy can to pull a bag of walmart trash. The liners let me just pull everything out in one go.

Tare weight isn't accurate enough on a light truck dumping 400 pounds of trash because the truck can vary 200 pounds in fuel weight from full to empty tank, plus you could roll in without the wife some days. On a garbage truck the empty weight and the payload are so much higher that fuel/employee weight doesn't matter as much.
