You can become a 32 degree over a weekend. Some people spend thousands of dollars to do so. They are rushed through each ritual without learning or memorizing any of it. It's no different than rich people who fly to the highest camp on mount Everest to hike the last trail to the summit. They are basically skipping the cue without actually accomplishing anything, in my opinion. In other words, they are basically buying bragging rights without actually earning them. Other kinds of Masonry do not think highly of Scottish Rite due to that. Mind you, not all Scottish Rite lodges do that. You also have blue lodges and York Rite. FYI, a third degree within a blue lodge is equivalent to a 32 within Scottish Rite. The difference between them all are the rituals and how they are carried out and performed. There are no secrets that are reveal at different levels. That whole porch Mason stuff is something that people fall for all of the time. That way if a Mason talks to you about Masonry, and you deem them to be a lower level Mason, you are not going to believe them. Or you will think that they too don't know what goes on at the higher levels. Do you see how that stuff works? It's a brilliant way to keep the secrets of the fraternity within the fraternity. They don't want the "secrets" getting out there because it will ruin the experience for new initiates. Here's the secret, there aren't any. It has all been made public and available for anyone to lookup online. The key is understand the philosophical aspects behind the rituals. Unfortunately many Masons don't, nor will they ever, understand it. What's important in Masonry are the offices held within the lodge. In order to become a Worshipful Master you must have held every office within the lodge. This will depend on the organizational layout of a lodge. It can be different from one lodge to the next; however, with the exception of the main offices required for a lodge to be constitutionally functional. You have to learn and memorizes a lot of stuff, including rituals and scripts. You have to memorize all of the scripts and roles held by each office to get to that point. For some Masons it can take decades before accomplishing this. Some Masons can do it within a few years. It all depends on how many members there are within a lodge. It also depends on intelligence and devotion. You have to be elected a candidate for an office. Then they vote on whether or not you obtain that office.
