I feel like awareness is actually the key to give over fear. Distracting yourself actually gives fear power. But once you let go, and accept all the sensations going through your body, and mind the fear subsides. You take away its power by going through it, and seeing how safe you are. And how impermanent all feelings and sensations are.

I try to catastrophize in the most positive way: "what would be the worst thing that could happen to me? Dying? That would also kill my crippling anxiety! Yeaaaiii!". 🙃

I actually found deep breathing increased my anxiety during turbulence, but square breathing helped immensely. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, Breathe out for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds. Rinse and Repeat.

What helped me with my anxiety was realizing that, yes, I feel like I'm going to have a really bad time, but I'm going to do it anyway, so I might as well enjoy it. (Panic attacks suck)

As a child, I used to fly across the US six times a year. I would experience anxiety, motion sickness, nausea, fear, etc. As I got older, most of these feelings got easier or passed completely. I occasionally still experience nausea, the smell of airplane diesel fuel will automatically trigger nausea. I use similar techniques such as mint and pressure points for nausea, comfortable clothes, ice water, hot tea, gingerale or 7up/sprite, etc. The importance of being aware of your triggers and using tools like food/drinks and other methods to help gain control and a step ahead of the potential feelings of anxiety and/or nausea. It really becomes a game of 'mind over matter' to trick your brain into getting past those irrational but understandable thoughts. I know it wasn't easy for you to share, but kudos to you for doing it...sincerely!!! ❤😊

Oh this is a timely video. I've been dealing with heightened anxiety for what feels like no reason lately. One thing I do sometimes when I feel myself getting anxious is naming facts for things around me like "that box is white, I am safe, the sky is blue, I am safe" just to reinforce that I don't need to be anxious. It also helps ground me which I'm sure has pulled me out of anxiety attacks. Lots of hugs your way!

Ever time I hit turbulence, I automatically have memories of river trips I’ve been on. Damn, my brain “works” sometimes. Thanks for sharing. Very interesting/engaging. My daughter was recently diagnosed with anxiety and this video provides some additional lenses for me to view her experiences through.

As someone that's had bad anxiety for half my life a lot of my triggers are similar, fear of vomiting will send you down a deeper rabbit hole everytime. I will definitely watch this again but talking about it for me has helped, thanks for opening up and putting this out there.

Thanks so much for being vulnerable and sharing this! I learned a trick when I went through beginner scuba diving that helps with the ear popping. You simply pinch your nose and then slowly increase and hold the pressure of blowing out and it’ll re-pressurize your ears. Sometimes you have to blow out way more than you’d think, but it’s fine! Works like a champ, and I rarely ever have popped ears for long.

Watching this with my wife and what we're learning is that you and her are the same person 😂 she literally does all the same things to curb her panic when traveling. Love the fact that you have the strength to share this with us. The fact that you guys are so authentic and always show us your true selves. I struggle so much with anxiety in airplanes, avoiding airplanes for the last 5 years of my life. I’m not happy about it and I feel “crazy” that others can enjoy it and get on and I’m so scared to even imagine myself flying again. Your video is comforting and helpful to say the least! I feel like therapy might be the tool to help me get back on an airplane and travel again. Thank you for being vulnerable 🤍

Okay so this video has been so relatable. I also have motion sickness too, but the thing is that I'm scared I'm gonna have a headache or vertigo or even feel dizzy. This thought has made me cancel a few trips because I'm petrified of the idea of flying. I guess this video has helped me a lot.

Great video, you hit all the methods. One other thing I might add, that helped me with serious bouts of sea sickness. It’s finding out about the plane or boat you’re in and building faith in the person who is actually piloting or navigating the craft. They’ve gotten away from those anxiety inducing fears long ago. Understanding their confidence, allows you to transfer all your fears off of yourself and onto them. It worked for me anyway. You have the advantage of knowing your pilot and putting your trust in his knowledge about the helicopter and his skill at flying it. Chris is meticulous, you couldn’t have a more worthy person to trust with your life, and he said the most important thing, he doesn’t want to do anything that’s going to get himself killed either. Hang in there Becki, you guys are building an awesome life filled with amazing experiences. Looking forward to your journey West. ✌🏼 A funny story. I had finally conquered my seasickness. We were heading out to a deep area to snorkel and fish in the Florida Keys with my former wife’s father and our three sons. I was feeling good about myself as we were cruising pretty far off shore. My sons 12, 10 and 9 had been bragging about how they would never get seasick. As we approached our fishing spot, I turned around from watching the horizon to see all three of them, all but passed out and rolling with the motion of the waves like 3 dead seals on the floor. Well. It was funny to me. 🙂

I have the same issue. Other people knew that I had an anxiety disorder but I personally didn't realize it until the pandemic heightened it. I feel this so hard and so happy that you took the courage to talk about it.

I close my eyes and talk to myself: the turbulence is like air resistance that birds overcome. They have to move sideways, and even in a strong wind, they stay straight. So there is nothing to fear - the plane must do the same as the birds. That is my way to overcome my fear of flying :)

Every video of yours I watch, I'm more and more impressed by the similarities to myself and my girlfriend. Myself, the low hour helicopter pilot and owner, and my girlfriend, who is wanting to get more into photography and taking helicopter adventures with me, but also suffers from anxiety from a lot of different factors. I really feel like you both are just versions of us from the future who have progressed through the challenges we're facing now and you're sharing your experiences to help us through ours. First of all, I love you guys, and Chris strikes me as a superior and safe pilot. I have a couple stories that may help. As an R-22 pilot, I had an incident that might help. I was flying solo across Puget Sound and returning from a town about 1/2 an hour away, partially over islands where I could and partially over open water. Back in 1990ish, we used paper charts, and mine was stowed under my seat (RH), and the seat base was hinged at the front and lifts from the rear. I tried lifting my butt up, however it left not enough room to get my arm down to the chart, since it is about 12" deep. So, I released my seat belt so I could twist around and lift up better, and as I grabbed the chart, my knee hit the cyclic which rolled the machine fairly significantly to the left and then back to the right; I bounced off one door and clear across the cabin to the other, hitting both doors, and after the upset and a diaper change, I reflected on that when they found my body, they would have been very confused about what caused the machine to crash 😲 (never take off your seat belt in flight (and on commercial, at least leave it fastened loosely)). But even with that upset, it would take more to get mast bumping, so relax. The other time, was while working as a flight attendant on a regional 'small' Dash-8 which only required one cabin crew, (me), and up to 40 pax. The flight was 2/3 full and we encountered some fairly severe turbulence, for which we were instructed by the flight deck for mandatory seat belt use. I am also a hang glider pilot, so to me the turbulence was actually fun, and I was sitting there in my forward seat facing backwards to the forward row of passengers. They had looks of fear on their faces each time we slammed into the strong bumps over eastern Washington. I explained to their looks, that I was also a pilot, and a design engineer with aircraft design experience, and that in the bigger scheme, what we were encountering was of no consequence to the design of the plane; The wings on this aircraft are designed to flex and are ridiculously strong, and what we were experiencing was child's play compared to what they could actually take. One lady whispered to her friend, "as long as he is smiling, I think we will be ok". When disembarking, probably 1/3 of the passengers thanked me at the door for making them feel safe (and they were). I think looking at turbulence like a roller coaster ride is the best scenario.

I developed exactly the same thing over the last few years. I’ve just finished some therapy that has helped relieve anxiety I had a round flying, it’s massively changed how I feel and I can now look at booking a flight which before therapy gave me anxiety so bad I couldn’t even bring myself to look! It was an expensive process to go through but my fear of flying turned out to be something much more and was worth the money to remove it. Thanks for sharing. ❤

This was so helpful to me, thank you thank you thank you! I struggle with a lot of the same things. My boyfriend has been building his helicopter since before we met and next month we embark on an adventure to get him fully licensed. I won't lie, probably going to need to watch this video a couple more times. Side note - Therapy was the best thing I ever did for myself. It took a lot to get me to start, but now that I am almost a year in I cannot imagine my life without it.

I fear throwing up. very few people really understand that it is beyond just not liking it, but that my whole life can begin to revolve around being sure I don't feel nauseas and the panic that starts when I do, which just makes it worse. Thank you Becki for opening up about this. There is absolutely nothing rediculous about it. I struggle myself with flying anxiety, eventhough not panic attacks but it is still very uncomfortable. So thanks for those tipps and thanks to Chris for explaining some of the technical side of things. I expierienced being calmer when i understand what happens. So understanding some basic parameters and facts in aviation helped me a lot calming down and changing to my rational brain faster in these situations.

Thank you Becky for making this video. And to Chris for explaining turbulence. It’s really common to have flying anxiety. Everything you talked about are things that are just giving us more tools for our personal tool bag. I deal with flying anxiety and have sought help for it. I find it’s about controlling things either on my day of flying or when flying. Breathing, distracting yourself and having knowledge about planes is so helpful. I took a few flying lessons in order to understand the dynamics of flying better. It helped me slow and at times stop those irrational fears from starting. I also book window seats and get to the airport early! Deep breathing helps or I even have asked the stranger sitting next to me to talk with me. I tell them I feel anxious and I find people are receptive and kind and will talk with me. One thing I think people on airplanes can do for others who have anxiety. If you are in a window seat and notice the Person next to you looks uncomfortable. Lifting up the shade or making sure it’s up , to look out is so helpful. I don’t always get a option to choose a window seat, but looking out of the plane window especially during turbulence helps me immensely. It’s those little things. I usual ask when getting on board about the weather, winds and such. That way I feel prepared. Like if I’m flying into a airport and I see on the weather app that the weather is not the greatest. Then I know as we decent we will have some bumps. I prepare myself for it and practice my breathing! Thanks again for bringing this to light! 🙌🙌🙌

My husband shared this with me and thought it might help as I too share similar experiences as you when flying. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one and that I'm not crazy for feeling this way. It can be hard to share and explain to someone who doesn't go through this as they don't truly understand what you're feeling. After watching this I feel like maybe I should talk to someone about my anxiety because it might be extremely helpful.

My wife also suffers with anxiety and overthinking/catastrophising, so I recognise exactly where you are coming from. Thank you for sharing! I love your channel! Following you guys for years, but first time commenting here... I have an anxiety for flying too. But thanks to my boyfriend I finally find a solution so here is my tip. Every time on the airplane I order some kind of alcohol whiskey, vodka ets. I'm not a drinker at all so I mix it with some Coca Cola or something similar to kill the alcohol's strong taste. This relaxes my brain and my body so much and keeps me anxiety free for the whole flight. And also playing some music in my headphones helps a lot.

Love this! I've always struggled with motion sickness and anxiety so I get it. Separating the root causes of things and knowing more about yourself helps so much. For me it turned out that a lot of my issues stem from POTS / dysautonomia. Treating that root cause has been life changing for me. I have a big flight coming up so this video came at the perfect time. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing. It's good to know others have the same issue. I used to have really bad flying anxiety where I'd take Xanax for every flight, but like you, I'd end up a mess by the time I arrived. Part of what helped me with the turbulence on commercial flights was comparing the smaller bumps to riding in a car. I'd also watch the flight attendants. If they're fine, we're good. But when my anxiety starts to ramp up, I do the same things you do: watch a movie, listen to a book, etc. I love the briefcase full of money technique and will have to add that in. Overall, though, anxiety sucks.

Thank you for your transparency. I get motion sickness when I use my phone or read while in a moving car or if I am on a plane and I keep turning to the side while talking to someone. I noticed that when I was in school and would get dizzy and noxious if I tried to revise before and exam or get some home work done in the car. Still get that to this day.

Thank you for sharing all this with us! Honestly the first part of your video, it was like listening to someone talk about myself and my anxieties. I've got pretty bad generalised anxiety along with adhd, so I would often have panic attacks when it comes to travel - there's SO MUCH to account for, from making sure you arrive on time, that you get parking, that you packed everything... and that's just starting the travel journey 🙃 Your channel has always been super inspiring to me (the travel! the photography! the home decor!) and I would watch your videos and think fuck yeah, Becki is so prepared for all this stuff, maybe I should do what she does to prepare. I used to feel like so many of those big, monumental adventures were so out of reach because of my self-perceived "limitations." It means a lot to watch this video and hear that you struggle with this stuff too. This comment has gotten very long and overly personal so all this to say THANKS BECKI you are great

I have had a small GA STOL Airplane for the last 10 years and have been flying for 30 years and my wife of 27 years still will not fly with me, I think she’s been up with me maybe three or four times because she struggles with anxiety. When she gets into “ what if “ mentality and start asking a whole bunch of questions her mind totally shuts down and can only focus on scenario based emergencies The turbulence never really bothered her. Her biggest struggle was an hour before she gets into my plane. She was her own worst enemy in the 60 minutes proceeding the flight.

You are absolutely NOT alone- on both fronts. I’ve had emetophobia my WHOLE life. Since I was a kid. I’ve been flying since I was a baby as I have a bunch of pilots and ATCs in my family. I had a really bad flight from Denver to Salt Lake City and the turbulence was so bad that the people behind me were getting sick, I was holding the woman’s hand next to me (a stranger) and I was listening to the hardcorest of hardcore on my iPod video to drown out the sound of other people panicking and the sick people. Since then, my brain thinks EVERY flight will be that bad (and I know better as they are not and have not been). I know the science of flight but as soon as I am in the seat (window- always) I panic. I have to take Dramamine and anxiety meds because I have anxiety and I’m worried I’ll be sick. I have talked about this with my therapist and other therapists for years and I still can’t shake it. Rationally I know better, but the irrational side always takes over. So I’m happy you’re making strides. Tomorrow I’m flying PHL to MCO and I’m already anxious about it. 😅😵‍💫

it's nice being able to finally name the thing. when it's undefined it's like "there is something deadly in this room!" and your mind goes everywhere and then you hear a ROAR and "ahh, it's a TIGER!" it's still scary but now you have more information and can start thinking rationally about options (does the slow blink trick work with large cats, for example)

Appreciate this! I have a ton of anxiety and can’t afford therapy. So these tools will definitely come in handy. I’ve had anxiety all my life and never been able to deal with it other than just sucking it up because that’s my only option. I always play worst case scenarios in my head about just about everything. I play through them and hope that helps in the event anything actually happens. Also love your eye glasses! Super cute and really suit you!

Thank you for sharing and being so transparent. Anxiety Disorder & Vestibular Migraine Disease. I had a full on panic attack boarding a flight, EMS and the works. Didn't fly that day nor since, that was July 2021. I can't even pass the airport without anxiety. This is helpful, even if I never fly again 😅. Tools for dealing with anxiety are always good. I have the same fear of puking and learned a long time ago that peppermint helps nausea...that's why gum makes you feel better so it's definitely not a placebo effect. I'm a bit of a weirdo in that I LOVE the idea of flying, but I hate actually doing it lol And never apologize for feeling the way you feel. We ALL have anxiety to a certain degree...it just presents differently for everyone!

Thanks for making this video and all your cool videos. I think it’s incredibly helpful in facing many fears people have of flying and also insightful for us on the other side of the controls. Many years ago when I was instructing we had a few people each year come and learn some basics of flying fixed wing small general aviation aircraft to ease their anxiety. I highly recommend it to everyone. A small plane during cruise that’s well trimmed will practically fly itself straight and level and helps instil confidence in the person at the controls. I also highly recommend anyone who is nervous to feel free to chat with the pilots of your next commercial flight for a few minutes, we are usually easy going and passionate about our job and love to answer any questions people may have or help them feel more at ease. Just ask the flight attendant when you’re boarding if there is time. Visiting the flight deck isn’t just for kids anymore. Have a great flight !

9:56 OMG turbulence! This is the one that gets me 100% of the time. People unaffected by this are actual superheroes!! It really helped when I learned that turbulence has never taken down a commercial flight. Thanks for making this video and reminding me I’m not alone in this anxiety.

I comprehend what you are going thru. Though I haven't had an anxiety attack over flying, I had an anxiety attack about 20 years ago while hiking in the Smokey Mountains alone. I went on a hike where I read the distance wrong. I read the total in and back as 6 miles, but it was actually 12 miles round trip. I got to the middle point (the turn around) and hadn't seen anyone on the hike at all. I was woefully under prepared for that length of a hike. It wasn't well marked. I had a GPS unit to help, but it was mostly useless due to the tree coverage. I started having an anxiety attack about how tired I was, how far I was into the mountains, my water I brought, food, etc. I started hyperventilating and started freaking out. Thankfully I understood what was going on quickly. I realized I had to settle myself down and talk myself out of those thoughts. I had plenty of time in the day. I was walking next to water if I absolutely needed it. I could survive without food for a day if needed. And I still had a GPS unit for helping me get back to the beginning. It sucked. When I got back to the car, I felt like I conquered something even bigger than a 12 mile hike by myself. I also now double check everything about a hike that people who I hike with think I over plan... oh well for them.

The struggle that I’m having is that it’s not the safety I’m concerned of it’s the sinking feeling turbulence,I’m going to the Virgin Islands in less then 2 weeks and I loved this video

Thank you for sharing this Becki! As someone who also catastrophizes and experiences anxiety, it is really helpful hearing you talk about your experiences. I had my first panic attack a few months after my kid was born and was convinced I was dying. My partner helped me by distracting me with funny vine videos. I’m also working on ways to increase my rational thinking, like my own little Chris in my head, which helps me take energy away from my anxiety provoking thoughts. Thanks again for your honesty/vulnerability, it is always nice when you have real examples of not being alone in your experiences!

You and I are two peas in a pod. I struggle with all the same. My anxiety is highly focused in hypochondria. The pandemic certainly amplified everything, but I feel like I’m moving in the right direction.

When I see all the people getting on the plane I get super hot and feel there's not enough air, I will try some of the coping mechanism you mentioned...thanks

Uuuh I feel'ya - different but same. f.e. I hate to be stuck in traffic - I had times, i immediatly felt the need to go to the bathroom. Even i went to the bathroom literally 5 minutes ago. I started to plan a looot of time. Same, when I have to catch a plane or a train. Planing ahead is key - having water and snacks with me as well :-) Thanks for sharing Becki 🌻

Looking at the horizon when you are feeling seasick on water will also dispel the nausea! Great tip!

I have this AGGRESSIVE anxiety about read travelling, specially buses. Part of it is motion sickness, and it get much worse travelling at night, but even thinking about the smell inside a bus makes me nauseous. I was diagnosed with generalised anxiety recently… Thank you for sharing this. It is a massive struggle in my life.

@@BeckiandChris it is bizarre. I have been on therapy for ten years and medication for three so I’ve been getting better. Again, thanks for sharing because it can be so isolating feeling powerless over this ❤️

@@BeckiandChris therefor i learned that in aromatherapie you can have specific essential oils that you can use to ease that problem. Lavender for example is calming and bergamotte lifts the mood. Maybe give those a try. There are bracelets and necklaces with wooden beads out there, where you can put on these oils and smell them, when you need it.

My wife is also the same, has severe anxiety flying. We manage to do 4 vacations a year and her limit is 5 hours on the plane. She takes sleeping pills which helps relax her, and to board she boards early with people who have disabilities.

I get a ton of anxiety leading up to flights, similar to what you were sharing about being late, missing flights, etc. I like the tips about thinking about “worst case scenarios”. I will definitely use these next time!

I had a huge fear of airplanes when I was younger and I also suffered (still do) easily from motion sickness. My mom used to give me dried orange peels that they sell in those preservative packages st asian grocery stores. I dunno if it was a placebo or if the acidity just shocked ny system enlugh to distract me in some way, but dried orange peels basically got me over my fear of airplane travel and solves my motion sickness nausea about 85% of the time.

I grew up in the 1970s with all the Airport movies, planes being hijacked by terrorists, and a childhood barber being killed in a plane crash. I never wanted to fly on a plane. Ten years ago I took my first airplane trip to Las Vegas for my birthday. I've been on train cars that shook worse than the airplane on take off and landing. I haven't been on a plane since then but I don't think I'll have any problems flying again.

Samsies on so many things here, I’ll probably share a bunch later 😂 Thanks for being vulnerable on the internet and sharing, it helps others with anxiety feel less anxious, a lot of it feels isolating and like you’re the only person struggling in these ways. Long time sub, huge kudos for sharing! I had flight anxiety younger in life but learned about the physics and mechanics to become one with the machine (variety of helis, small and large fixed wing). Understanding turbulence also helped a lot. Also understand this is next level but being on the controls was also very helpful. Blue skies to Cali!! 🚁

So timely! Thanks! I love to travel but I’m a nervous flyer 😅 what I usually do when there’s a bad turbulence is, I take a video of it so my focus is somehow diverted 😅 and I say to myself - at least I have something to “laugh about” if I do survive the flight.

I feel u. I am claustrophobic and so when I get in a plane during liftoff and decline I tend to get extremely anxious. I usually take one of my muscle relaxers and with music or TV show on my phone I can get passed it. Last summer was a flight to and from Vegas from Philly was hard but got through. Distractions work for me very well. Need to invest in some good noise-canceling headphones though
